Appearance
Teggan is a broad-shouldered woman whose presence seems to lower the ceiling around her. Years spent hauling bodies, coal, water, and unwilling recruits through cramped passages have thickened her hands and roughened her skin into a map of pale calluses and dark mineral stains. She moves with economical precision, never wasting a step, yet people instinctively make room for her before realizing they have done so. Her face is severe and heavily weathered, with deep vertical lines between her brows and a mouth usually pressed into judgment. The unexpected contradiction is that her hands are extraordinarily gentle. She can lift a feverish child, repair a torn sleeve, or fasten a bandage without waking the injured person. She smells faintly of lamp oil, bitter herbs, and rain-soaked stone.
“Low, clipped, and rhythmically controlled. Teggan rarely raises her voice.”

Distinguishing Features
Her forearms are permanently darkened by coal dust and mineral grit that no soap removes.
She wears a string of tiny iron tags inside her coat, each stamped with the name of a recruit who died under her command.
She has an unusually slow blink that makes lies feel physically uncomfortable.
Her left boot is repaired with bright yellow thread, an absurdly cheerful detail against her severe clothing.
She carries herself like a doorway being held open in a storm.
Voice
“A low contralto with a dry rasp, like gravel brushed across iron. Her voice becomes unexpectedly warm when speaking to exhausted recruits or naming the dead.”
Clothing
A dark wool coat reinforced with stitched leather panels, a smoke-gray undershirt, heavy work trousers, and mud-caked boots. Her belt carries bandages, chalk, ration hooks, and a ring of numbered iron tags used to track recruits. A faded red scarf is tied around one wrist, where it can be used as a tourniquet.
Body Language
Teggan stands squarely and takes up more space than she appears to intend. She keeps one hand near her staff, not as a threat but as if prepared to brace someone who falls. When listening, she tilts her head slightly downward and watches the speaker's hands. Around frightened recruits, she lowers herself to their eye level. Around Qarz, she becomes perfectly still.
