Appearance

Rusk is a weathered, broad-shouldered man with the compact strength of someone accustomed to carrying water buckets and unconscious bodies. He moves with a slight forward lean, always as if crossing a deck in rough seas, yet his hands remain astonishingly steady. His face is deeply creased around the mouth from years of reassuring frightened patients. A white scar runs from his left ear to the corner of his jaw, while the rest of his skin is marked by tiny circular burn scars from old medicinal cautery. He smells of bitter herbs, lamp oil, clean wool, and faintly of iron. The unexpected softness of his appearance is a pair of immaculate, carefully shaped eyebrows that give him an almost scholarly elegance until he begins barking orders.

Height5 feet 9 inches
BuildCompact, heavy-muscled, and slightly stooped from years of lifting patients.
EyesDark hazel with amber flecks, usually narrowed in concentration.
HairIron gray, cropped close at the sides and tied into a short, uneven tail at the nape.
SkinSun-browned olive with a reddish undertone across the nose and cheeks.

Low, dry, and unhurried. Rusk speaks in short practical sentences, but when discussing the dead his language becomes unexpectedly poetic.”

Distinguishing Features

A long pale scar beneath the left ear.

Three brass rings sewn into the right sleeve, each marking a patient he could not save.

A missing tip on the right little finger.

Nails stained green from handling a rare medicinal moss.

A small glass vial worn at his throat containing river water from the night his brother died.

Voice

A low baritone with a rasp at the edges, like a whetstone dragged over metal. When he is frightened, his voice becomes softer rather than louder.

Clothing

A faded indigo tunic under a waxed canvas apron, wrapped forearms, soft leather boots, and a red wool sash used to bind splints. His pockets are crowded with folded notes, dried mint, bone needles, and polished river stones used as makeshift counters.

Body Language

Rusk leans close when listening, tilting his head as though measuring a pulse with his eyes. When anxious, he rubs the pad of his thumb across the first knuckle of his left hand. During an emergency, his posture straightens completely and his movements become clipped, economical, and almost military.
