Oru K'etik

0·Nonbinary·Small
Neutral Good, though fear and coercion often make Oru appear secretive or uncooperative

Species

Harrowdeep Basin Human

Appearance

Oru is a narrow, sharp-shouldered child with the exhausted stillness of someone much older. Their brown skin is filmed with pale cistern dust, which gathers in the fine creases around their knuckles and at the corners of their mouth. Their hair is black, cut unevenly with a ritual knife, and stiffened in places by dried mineral salts. One eyebrow has been shaved away and is growing back in ragged tufts. Their left ear bears three tiny bone beads, each carved with a dead person's initial. Oru moves with a cautious, sideways gait, testing every surface with the ball of one foot before committing their weight. The unexpected thing is their hands: despite their emaciation and shaking, they are remarkably clean, with carefully trimmed nails and the delicate precision of a miniature sculptor. They leave an impression of a frightened animal trying very hard to look like a patient scholar.

Distinguishing Features

Three small bone beads carved with the initials of dead cult members

A shaved left eyebrow growing back unevenly

A crescent-shaped burn behind the right ear from the failed ritual

Dust permanently caught in the lines of both palms

A habit of tilting their head toward walls as if listening through stone

Voice

A thin, dry voice with a faint basin accent, often reduced to a whisper after dusk. When reciting names, Oru's voice becomes steadier and carries much farther than their small body suggests.

Clothing

A patched gray work tunic beneath an oversized brown maintenance coat, both stiff with old lime dust. Their trousers are tied at the ankles with red thread, and one sleeve has been crudely repaired with strips of funeral cloth. They wear soft, mismatched sandals to avoid making noise on the vault stone.

Body Language

Oru keeps their shoulders hunched and their chin lowered, but their eyes constantly map the room. When frightened, they press their thumb against the first knuckle of each finger in sequence. When someone speaks kindly, they stare at the person's hands instead of their face. Around Thalumai, they sit unnaturally still, as if trying not to take up enough space to be noticed.
