Appearance
Qhapa is a lean, weather-hardened man whose presence feels less like a person entering a room and more like a measuring instrument being set down. His skin is wind-browned and powdered with pale mineral dust that never quite washes away. He moves with a restless, angular precision, constantly shifting his weight as though the floor has invisible contour lines. His left hand repeatedly checks the brass survey ring hanging from his belt, while his right thumb traces distances along the seams of nearby objects. He has a long, flattened braid threaded with red route-cords, and his coat smells faintly of rain, lamp oil, and crushed juniper. The unexpected contradiction is that his intimidating battlefield posture collapses completely when someone offers him sincere praise: he becomes pink-faced, soft-voiced, and unable to maintain eye contact.
“His voice is dry, quick, and precise, with sudden pauses where he seems to measure the listener's reaction. He speaks in route metaphors, gives distances instead of emotional explanations, and becomes unusually poetic when discussing mountains.”

Distinguishing Features
A brass survey ring on his belt that he checks every few seconds without noticing.
Red cords braided through his hair, each representing a route he personally walked.
A habit of standing at an angle to everyone else, as though leaving room for an invisible road.
His fingertips are permanently stained with blue survey ink.
He carries a folded map sewn from mismatched scraps of cloth, yet refuses to explain what it depicts.
Voice
“A dry, close voice that sounds like paper sliding across a drafting table, usually quiet enough to make listeners lean toward him. When issuing commands, it becomes startlingly loud and carries across wind, rain, and crowded camps.”
Clothing
A storm-blue wool expedition coat reinforced with leather panels, layered over a sleeveless quilted vest. Red route-cords hang from the collar, each tied to a completed survey. He wears mud-stiffened trousers, knee-high climbing boots, fingerless gloves, and a broad belt crowded with rulers, chalk, compasses, folded vellum, and tiny brass tags.
Body Language
Qhapa stands too close without realizing it, often leaning over another person's shoulder to inspect whatever they are holding. During conversation, he draws invisible lines between people, doors, windows, and exits with one finger. When lying, he becomes unnaturally still and grips his brass survey ring until it leaves an imprint in his palm.
