Jarl Heimskr
Jarl Heimskr
At the table
Voice
A weather-roughened speaking voice with the slight grain of someone accustomed to cold air, smoke, and long conversations in echoing halls. It has no theatrical boom; its force comes from clean phrasing and the expectation that a decision will follow.
He speaks with measured northern vowels and a practical rhythm, shaped by years of giving instructions in drafty halls and over winter roads. His sentences land firmly, with a faint rasp from cold air and old smoke. When worried, he becomes more exact, naming people and actions rather than raising his voice.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Offer Heimskr a practical way to protect both Jor and the household, rather than demanding immediate trust or public disclosure. He responds to evidence, a clear plan, and someone who can explain the cost of delay. A private, candid approach may persuade him to reveal the warning; public pressure makes him close ranks.
Goal
Determine whether the warning about Jor is credible, protect his household without condemning his son unheard, and bring Jor home if it is safe to do so.
Motivation
To keep his family and people safe without repeating the cowardice of delay that marked the famine winter.
Appearance
A broad, weathered man with a heavy brow and a face that seems carved by years of squinting into snow glare. He keeps his silver-brown hair combed into a precise ridge and his beard trimmed to an exact, squared edge, an almost vain tidiness at odds with his rough-hewn presence. He stands with his weight settled on the balls of his feet, as if ready to cross a room before anyone else notices trouble. His wool mantle sheds snow in stiff little scales; beneath it, his knuckles are permanently ink-stained from signing orders. He leaves the impression of a door barred from the inside: reassuring until you realize it can also keep you out.
Clothing
Layered charcoal wool, a seal-brown fur mantle, a close-fitting cap, and a plain iron clasp bearing his household mark. His clothes are carefully brushed even after travel; the hems are repaired with visible, competent stitching.
Body language
Waits with his weight forward and one hand resting on the head of his cane, never quite leaning on it. In council he plants both feet squarely; with family he angles his shoulders toward the nearest exit, a habit that makes affection look like readiness to flee.

Combat
AC 12 · HP 18 · 30 ft.Heimskr is not a trained battlefield combatant. He positions himself behind guards or sturdy furniture, uses his authority to stop a rush long enough for others to act, and retreats rather than pursuing. He will strike only to make space for escape or protect someone beside him.

Background
Heimskr was raised to inherit a modest northern jarldom where winter stores mattered more than grand speeches. As a young man, he learned to settle disputes by listening until both sides ran out of rehearsed arguments. His defining failure came during the famine winter of his thirty-second year: he delayed opening the sealed grain stores while waiting for neighboring jarls to agree on a shared ration plan. By the time he acted, people had died. Since then, he has treated hesitation as a sin and prepared himself to make unpopular decisions early. He married Tovvi, a practical healer who tells him the truth without ceremony. Their son Jor left home years ago after a bitter argument about duty and the throne. Heimskr recently received word that Jor has returned, and a secret warning that changeling sons can bring danger into a family and a realm. The warning offers no proof, only intimate details about Jor's childhood that should be known to almost no one. Heimskr has ordered his household to keep Jor's return quiet while he tries to learn whether the warning is a threat, a lie, or a plea. His secrecy has already estranged Tovvi, who believes a father should meet his son before a ruler questions him.
Role in the story
A worried father and politically cautious ruler whose attempt to protect Jor through secrecy may become the very danger that divides the family. He can be an ally, a source of authority, or an obstacle if the characters force the matter into public view.
“As a young man, he learned to settle disputes by listening until both sides ran out of rehearsed arguments.”
- Faction
- Head of his own northern household and a participant in the regional jarl council; loyal to his people before any wider alliance.
