Seln Vey
At the table
Voice
His voice has a dry, breathy rasp from cold roads and long calls over wind. The words come out with a courier's practiced urgency, as if each sentence needs to reach someone before a door closes. Seln's name itself is pronounced with a soft, quick onset and a tight final consonant.
He speaks in quick, clipped bursts shaped by years of calling over wind and traffic. He gives directions with exact turns and landmarks, but stumbles when asked to explain motives. His work has taught him to project his words across a road; under questioning, he runs sentences together and repeats himself.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Approach Seln with a specific, nonthreatening question and make clear what will happen to his information. He is more forthcoming if allowed to explain what he personally witnessed before being asked to interpret it. Do not promise immunity unless it can be delivered. If cornered or treated as a disposable suspect, he may run.
Goal
Prove that he did not arrange the relay token, then leave the ward office's reach long enough to decide whether returning to courier work is worth the risk.
Motivation
Fear drives Seln to escape punishment, but his memory of rescuing the surveyor makes it difficult for him to leave other people in danger.
Appearance
Seln has the compact, forward-tilting posture of someone accustomed to running with a load. Wind and grit have roughened his cheeks and reddened the bridge of his nose; fine dust settles in the creases beside his mouth. His dark hair sticks up in damp, stubborn points beneath his cap. He smells unmistakably of beeswax and crushed mint, the wax from sealing packets and the mint leaves he chews to steady his stomach. He seems to be listening even when he looks away, and when he stands still, one heel keeps lifting as if the ground were already asking him to leave.
Clothing
A patched slate-blue courier coat with a high collar, a waxed canvas satchel, fingerless wool liners, and a cap weighted at the brim with a small sewn-in strip of lead against mountain gusts. His boots are carefully resoled but caked with pale pass dust.
Body language
His shoulders rise toward his ears when questioned. He turns his whole torso toward whoever speaks, but his feet remain angled toward the nearest way out. When he trusts someone, he stops chewing mint and sets both heels flat.

Personality
14 traits and drivesSeln wants to be regarded as reliable, yet he constantly searches for an escape route. He is evasive with officials and surprisingly direct with fellow workers. When calm, he notices small practical needs and quietly helps; when frightened, he talks over people and tries to bargain before he understands the accusation. His courage is real but brief: it appears when someone nearby is in immediate danger, then gives way to shaking hands and second thoughts.

- Neutral, more concerned with surviving the day than serving any cause

Background
Seln grew up carrying parcels between the upland hamlets and the market road, first for his aunt, who ran a tiny copy-and-seal stall, and later for the civic couriers. He learned to recognize ward conduits by their hum and to take shelter before a pass storm turned ugly. His life changed during a winter delivery when a conduit cracked above a ravine. Seln heard its pitch turn sharp, cut the satchel from his shoulder, and dragged an injured surveyor clear before the ward-light burst. The surveyor survived, but Seln was blamed for arriving late with a sealed dispatch. Since then, he has believed that official records are often less truthful than frightened witnesses. Recently, he was caught near another damaged ward conduit. A relay token had been planted at Ember Pass, and Seln knows it was there, but he does not know who ordered it placed. He fears the authorities will make him the convenient culprit. He still sends a portion of every wage to his aunt, who has begun to lose her eyesight, and he owes an apology to the surveyor he once saved, who now works for the ward inspectors.
Role in the story
A frightened witness and wildcard in "Prelude Session 6: Audience with the Archmage." Seln can confirm that a relay token was planted at Ember Pass, but cannot identify who gave the order. His testimony may clarify the timeline while his fear and withheld evidence complicate the audience.
“He learned to recognize ward conduits by their hum and to take shelter before a pass storm turned ugly.”
