Salla
Salla
At the table
“a ventilation problem with ambition.”
Voice
A dry, slightly rasped voice with a faint breathy catch, like someone used to speaking through a scarf in a drafty workshop. She projects from her chest to carry over machinery, and laughs with a quick, gravelly bark.
She speaks in brisk, practical bursts shaped by years of shouting over pumps and bubbling vats. Her sentences often begin with a joke and end with an exact measurement. When discussing responsibility, she drops the humor and chooses words with visible care.
Speech patterns
How to play them
She is open and amusing with curious strangers, guarded when asked about her first major accident, and unexpectedly direct with anyone who has been exposed to a dangerous substance. Earn her trust by taking safety seriously without treating her as a joke.
Goal
Develop a controlled, harmless odor demonstration large enough to make Reedcut's council repair its neglected sewer ventilation, then persuade Iven that she is sorry without asking him to absolve her.
Motivation
She wants to turn an embarrassing, dangerous talent into something useful, and to be valued for more than the trouble she causes.
Appearance
Salla has weather-burnished umber skin, roughened across the knuckles and forearms by years of hauling copper vats through salt wind. Her broad jaw shifts visibly when she chews, and her small, square teeth show whenever she laughs, which is often and usually at the wrong moment. She moves with a careful, springy gait, as if balancing a tray of full bottles even when empty-handed. Unexpectedly for a hard-traveling alchemist, she keeps a collection of tiny, meticulously folded paper birds pinned inside her coat.
Clothing
A smoke-blue work coat with a high collar, patched elbows, deep pockets, and a copper clasp; a waxed apron stained with herb tinctures; practical boots; and a filter scarf she wears loose until danger is near.
Body language
She braces one hand on her belt when making a serious point, taps two fingers against her thigh while calculating, and leans toward people with the focused attention of someone inspecting a bubbling flask. Her laugh comes with a sudden shoulder hitch.

Background
Salla grew up among the salt marshes and dye sheds of Reedcut, where her mother, Jessa, taught her to distill useful things from spoiled mash and discarded herbs. At nineteen, Salla’s first improvised gas-lamp burst during a flood evacuation, filling a crowded stairwell with choking vapor. She hauled two trapped neighbors out herself, but one, a young apprentice named Iven, suffered lasting lung damage. The event made her meticulous about measuring doses and careless about admitting when a joke or experiment has gone too far. Now she works as a traveling alchemist and practical joker, selling fumigation services, stink-bombs for pest control, and protective masks. She is trying to perfect a harmless, city-scale odor demonstration to force the council of Reedcut to fund better sewer ventilation. Her old friend Odel, a civic engineer, wants her help but fears another accident; Jessa wants her home; and Iven, now a mapmaker, has not forgiven her. Salla sends him money anonymously, though he has begun to suspect the truth.
