“I was made to”
Voice
A dry, clear voice resonates from Modeus's chest cavity, carrying a faint metallic overtone like a bell heard through a closed door. Their cadence is deliberate, formed by centuries of hearing courtly commands and reading danger in the sounds of water and machinery. When angry, they become more exact rather than louder.
Modeus speaks from a resonant chest cavity, producing a dry, clear voice with a faint metallic overtone, like a bell heard through a closed door. Their sentences are measured and carefully placed, shaped by centuries of listening for commands in palace halls and warnings on open water. They do not raise their volume when angry; instead, their words become clipped, exact, and difficult to mistake.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Modeus begins by asking what people need protected, not what they want done. They are respectful but unsentimental, and test trust through small, practical agreements. They respond well to honesty, especially when a person admits fear or uncertainty. They resist being treated as a royal weapon, and will explain their boundaries plainly. Showing concern for the ferry communities or honoring Nyx's choices earns more goodwill than flattery.
Goal
Keep the Red Lakes' crossings safe without turning their protection of Nyx into another chain around the prince's life.
Motivation
Modeus wants to turn an imposed duty into a freely chosen promise, protecting people without deciding their lives for them.
Appearance
Modeus stands a head taller than most humans, clad from crown to heel in pitch-black plates with a dry, glassy sheen, as if each surface were cooled volcanic rock. Their face is a seamless, featureless helm; no eyes, mouth, or grille show through it. A plume rises from the crown in loose, vaporous filaments of purple and red, flecked with pinpricks of pale light like a nebula seen through smoke. They move with the measured economy of a drawbridge lowering, but can cross a room in a sudden, silent burst. Within a minute of meeting them, most people notice that their blank helm never points toward the loudest speaker: it turns instead toward exits, windows, and anyone standing between a child and a door. A small copper wind-up bird is always pinned beneath their left shoulder plate, its beak rubbed almost smooth from handling, an unexpectedly tender keepsake on such an imposing guardian.
Clothing
A dark, fitted mantle hangs from the shoulders and is pinned with a plain bronze clasp. The fabric is patched at the hem with cloth from three lakeside towns. Their nebula plume is bound at its base with red cord, repaired more often than replaced.
Body language
Modeus keeps their shoulders squared and their feet planted as if bracing against a current. Their helm tracks a room in deliberate increments, often resting on exits and vulnerable bystanders rather than whoever is talking. When uncomfortable, they fold both hands over the pommel of Starfall. Around children, they lower their height and hold perfectly still, giving them time to decide whether to approach.

Distinguishing features
Personality
13 traits and drivesModeus is disciplined enough to stand motionless through a storm and compassionate enough to kneel in mud to listen to a frightened child. They distrust grand speeches but keep promises with almost painful exactness. In a crisis they become blunt and decisive; in a quiet room they can be awkwardly curious, asking questions about ordinary customs as if studying a foreign language. Their protectiveness pulls against their growing belief that people must be allowed to choose their own risks.
- Alignment
- Lawful good, with a hard-won suspicion of laws written to preserve power.

AC 22 · HP 255 · 30 ft.Modeus places themselves between danger and the least protected person, using their auras to stiffen allies' resolve. They open with Conquering Presence when foes threaten civilians, then close with Starfall and spend spell slots on Divine Smites against priority threats. They use their shield and position to deny access to allies rather than pursue fleeing enemies. If Nyx or Tavren is present, they will accept personal danger to keep either from being surrounded, but will not abandon a civilian evacuation to do so.

Background
Modeus was forged to stand between Prince Nyx and every blade, decree, and expectation that might claim him. Their earliest years were spent in palace corridors, learning the prince's footsteps and the court's dangerous silences. Nyx never wanted the throne; Modeus initially understood this as a problem to be solved, not a wish to be respected. That changed during the Ash Stair uprising, when the prince ordered Modeus to leave his side and carry a group of wounded servants out through a burning passage. Modeus obeyed, then returned to find Nyx alive and furious that his protector had treated him as the only life that mattered. It was the first order Modeus learned to question, and the first time they understood protection as more than possession. Years later, Nyx vanished from court rather than accept the crown. Modeus followed the trail to Etho and the Red Lakes, where they now guard the dangerous crossings, settlements, and old causeways that circle the water. They have allied with Tavren, whose practical courage earns Modeus's trust even when Tavren's methods unsettle them. Their current trouble is a series of night raids on lakeside ferries, apparently directed by someone who knows the old royal signals Modeus was built to recognize. Modeus fears the attacks are meant to draw Nyx out of hiding, but has not told Tavren that the signal codes still answer to their own voice.
