Merrit Kyd
Arena Guard
Merrit Kyd
Species
Human
Appearance
Merrit Kyd is a broad-shouldered human with the compact, weathered body of someone who has spent years bracing against crowds, beasts, and flying debris. His brown skin is roughened by arena dust, with pale scars crossing his knuckles and a crescent burn beneath his left ear. His nose was broken long ago and healed slightly crooked. He walks with a measured, almost leisurely roll, yet can pivot with startling speed when danger appears. His close-cropped hair is iron gray at the temples, despite his age. The unexpected thing about him is his hands, which are extraordinarily delicate and clean, with carefully trimmed nails and the gentle touch of a person who tends flowers before dawn.
“Low, clipped, and workmanlike. Merrit speaks as though every word must leave room for someone else to shout a warning.”

Distinguishing Features
Crooked nose and crescent-shaped burn beneath the left ear
Bronze arena badge worn upside down
Left thumb permanently stiff from an old gate accident
Keeps a tiny clay bead tied to his spear grip
Unusually gentle hands despite his scarred, martial appearance
Voice
“A gravelly baritone softened by years of giving calm instructions to frightened people. When he is truly angry, his voice becomes quieter rather than louder.”
Clothing
A faded ochre guard's tabard over a sleeveless linen shirt, reinforced leather bracers, sand-colored trousers, wrapped calves, and a battered bronze badge stamped with the arena's old gate symbol
Body Language
Merrit stands slightly sideways, keeping one foot free to move and one hand near his shield strap. When relaxed, he rubs his thumb over the ridges of old spear-calluses. When angry, he becomes very still and begins aligning nearby objects into neat rows.
