Mikkel
Mikkel
At the table
Voice
Mikkel speaks from a chest tightened by pain and strain. His voice has the rough, dry rasp of someone who has spent long days calling across wind and woodland, but now it catches unevenly and can drop into a low growl mid-sentence. When he tries to force a difficult word, breath pushes out in a short burst before the word arrives.
His words come in fragments, as if he has to catch each one before it falls away. He recognizes his family but often cannot follow their mother tongue. He may name himself Dovre when pressed. Some syllables break into low, rough growls, an involuntary sound that unsettles listeners and embarrasses him.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Approach him without crowding or shining bright light in his face. Use short, concrete sentences and give him time to answer. Familiar names, especially those of his family and Yippie, can briefly anchor him. Do not mistake his confusion or growling voice for a threat. If he says his name is Dovre, ask gently rather than correcting him harshly.
Goal
Escape the trolls’ custody before the changeling rite binds him to them, and find out whether Yippie survived.
Motivation
Hold on to the memories and loyalties that still feel like his own, even as his body and language change around him.
Appearance
Mikkel is a lean young man whose familiar outline seems subtly wrong: he is already taller than his old clothes suggest, and each day his shoulders sit a little higher beneath his ranger cloak. His weather-browned skin is roughened by rain and pine wind, with pale pressure marks where troll bindings chafed his wrists. His face is strained, as if every sentence must be assembled from pieces that will not quite fit. His upper canines are visibly longer and sharper than before. He winces in daylight, rubs his back and hands as if trying to ease aches beneath the skin, and moves with a hunter’s quiet footwork interrupted by sudden, awkward shifts of balance. His brown hair is darkening at the roots. The unexpected detail: he keeps trying to brush invisible burrs from his sleeves, a fussy habit that survives even in the filthy troll den.
Clothing
His weather-stained ranger cloak and practical hunting clothes are still his own, though the sleeves and hems now sit awkwardly short. Troll-made wraps and rough, ill-fitting pieces have been forced over or around them. He keeps his cloak close and resists anyone trying to take it.
Body language
He rubs his palms together and presses a hand into his lower back when aches flare. His shoulders tense at bright light, and he flinches at sudden sounds. When searching for a word, he fixes on the speaker’s mouth with an expression of strenuous concentration. His old hunter’s stillness returns when he hears movement in the woods.

Personality
16 traits and drivesMikkel used to be reserved and witty, preferring a quiet joke to a boast. That dry humor still surfaces when he feels safe, but pain and the strain of understanding speech now make him louder and more emotional than before. Around strangers he watches first and speaks cautiously; around his family he tries desperately to connect, sometimes blurting out feelings he would once have hidden. He is proud of his skill and hates being treated as helpless, yet he is frightened by how little control he has over his own body.
- Alignment
- Neutral, pulled between loyalty to his family and the instincts the trolls are trying to cultivate.

Combat
AC 13 · HP 9 · 30 ft.Mikkel avoids a fair fight. If armed, he uses distance, cover, and a clear escape route, firing once to discourage pursuit before moving. Confusion and body pain make him unreliable in prolonged combat. He does not willingly attack his family, and he may hesitate or lower his bow if they call him by familiar names.

Background
Mikkel, Heimskr’s fourth son, grew up with a bow in his hands and a map of the woodland paths in his head. Reserved and dry-witted, he preferred tracking game to sitting through family feasts, and was a master archer and capable rider. His fjord horse, Yippie, knew the paths so well that Mikkel could ride home through fog by trusting the animal. Mikkel often hunted near the woods, partly for food and partly because he wanted proof that trolls were more than old warnings. During a private hunt, a harsh spring storm sprang up without warning. The trolls took him in secret while the thunder covered his cries and led him deep into the forest. They intend to make him a spy and eventually kin by blood through a changeling rite connected to Jekt. Mikkel remembers his parents and brothers, but his mother tongue keeps slipping out of reach. He is louder and more emotional than he used to be, and he struggles to understand even familiar questions. His body aches as it changes; sunlight makes him wince, and his voice sometimes dips into a low growl. He has not learned to eat troll food. At a lakeside clearing, he has heard trolls singing during a strange ritual, but he does not know what it means. His captors have not told him whether Yippie survived the storm.
Role in the story
A missing son whose rescue is complicated by an incomplete transformation, faltering language, and the trolls’ plan to make him their spy. He is not an enemy by default: he can become a frightened ally, a source of information, or a tragic captive in need of protection.
