Fennik
Fennik
At the table
“stone in the furrow.”
Voice
A dry, papery rasp with a faint hollow resonance, as if each word passes through a seed-filled gourd. Before speaking, he takes a small breath that sounds like a leaf being drawn across rough wood.
He speaks in quick, dry bursts, often pausing just long enough for someone to expect a scare before continuing. He favors farmyard comparisons and deliberately overdramatic announcements, but drops the performance when discussing the pond accident or the failing orchard.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Let him perform a small scare without retaliating, then ask what he is guarding. He warms to anyone who treats his concerns seriously. A sincere promise to protect the children or investigate the cider press earns his cooperation.
Goal
Find the source of the farm's blight before the next planting and prove that his presence protects the farm rather than merely amusing it.
Motivation
To be useful and loved by the farmstead without giving up the thrilling mischief that makes him feel alive.
Appearance
A small, gourd-bodied leshy sits astride a fence rail as if it were a throne. His ochre-orange shell is deeply ribbed, matte and pebbled like old pottery, with a jagged grin and triangular eyeholes cut into its front. Thin green tendrils curl from his shoulders and wrists, and a dry leaf collar rustles when he turns. He moves in abrupt, jointless hops, then goes perfectly still, leaving the unnerving impression that the carved face has been watching all along. A surprising detail for a local terror: he keeps one tiny patch of clover carefully braided into a neat, green rosette on his belt.
Clothing
A child-sized, badly fitted farm smock hangs from his shoulders, repeatedly patched with scraps of flour sack. He has carefully waxed a little red scarf, the only garment he never lets the rain touch.
Body language
He perches with his feet hooked around the fence rail, leaning forward as though listening through the wood. When excited, his vines twitch like a cat's tail. When ashamed, he turns his carved face toward the nearest post and fusses with the clover rosette.

Personality
12 traits and drivesFennik is delighted by a well-timed fright but deeply serious about keeping people safe. With children he is a theatrical nuisance who relishes their shrieks; with adults he is watchful and stubborn, testing whether they notice the farm's troubles. When embarrassed, he becomes brisk and practical. When genuinely frightened, the jokes stop and he plants himself between danger and the people he loves.

AC 21 · HP 58 · 25 feetFennik opens with Hollow Harvest Cackle when several foes are close, then uses the fence, crop rows, and farm equipment to break lines of approach. He lashes at isolated threats and retreats by hopping between rails rather than fighting to the death. He avoids attacking children, downed foes, or anyone who appears to be protecting the farm.

Background
Fennik sprouted in a compost heap behind the farmhouse at Tallow Bend, where discarded gourds were piled after a blight ruined the autumn crop. The farm's youngest child, Yara, found him first and taught him that a sudden silhouette on a fence could make even a miserable day exciting. He became a self-appointed guardian of the fields, startling children away from the deep irrigation ditch and chasing crows from the seedbeds. His pranks grew bolder after a hard frost killed the last of the old orchard. During that winter, he lured a group of children off a frozen pond by appearing as a lantern-eyed scarecrow. One child fell through the ice, and Fennik dragged him out with a vine, but the child was badly chilled. Since then Fennik has tried to make every fright end in laughter, though he still cannot resist a perfectly timed jump-scare. Yara, now an apprentice midwife, visits the fence at dusk and argues with him about whether fear can ever be harmless. The farmstead is struggling with a new blight, and Fennik suspects the answer lies beneath the abandoned cider press.
Role in the story
A comic but sincere farmstead guardian who can become a guide to the blight mystery, a source of unsettling nighttime scares, or a reminder that good intentions do not make every prank harmless.
