At the table
Voice
A dry, gravelly rasp with a faint wet click at the back of certain words, produced by a broad jaw and a lifetime of shouting over river and caravan noise. His ordinary speech is clipped and workmanlike. When angry, he gets faster and more forceful, hammering each point as if calling commands across a flooded crossing.
His voice has a dry, gravelly rasp shaped by years of calling warnings over wagon wheels and river noise. He clips the ends of practical statements, like someone accustomed to being heard once and obeyed. When trying to charm a guard or employer, he slows down and lays out details carefully; when challenged, his consonants harden and his sentences become blunt.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Tamas presents himself as a practical candidate for guard service and offers useful knowledge about roads, threats, and caravan security. He is cordial with strangers who can help him leave the road, but turns defensive if they question his competence. He tries to steer conversations away from route schedules and Sorin's suspicions. If treated with patience, he may reveal that he feels trapped; if confronted with evidence, he first bargains, then threatens, and finally tries to flee.
Goal
Secure a place in a town guard, leave the caravan with his reputation intact, and keep the brokers from revealing how much he has helped them.
Motivation
Tamas wants to replace dependence on family and caravan with a badge, a fixed wage, and the certainty that nobody can order him back onto the road.
Appearance
Tamas is a broad-shouldered crocodile humanoid with a long, low-slung tail and overlapping scales that look like river stones glazed in oil. His jaw is squared and heavy, with small pale scars of old tooth wear rather than dramatic wounds. He walks with a deliberate, side-to-side sway, placing each foot as if testing mud for depth. In a crowded room, he watches doorways and hands, rarely faces. Unexpectedly for a caravan bruiser, he keeps a tiny paper windmill tucked into his collar and repairs it whenever its pin bends.
Clothing
A sleeveless, oil-dark travel coat with a high collar, patched at the elbows and cut away for his tail. He wears a faded guard-style sash he bought secondhand, sturdy wraps around his wrists, and a row of little brass route tags sewn inside his hem.
Body language
Tamas keeps his shoulders angled toward the nearest exit, even while speaking warmly. His tail makes slow, controlled sweeps behind him, but its tip taps the ground when he is lying. He holds eye contact only in short, appraising bursts and spends more time tracking a person's hands than their face.

Background
Tamas grew up among the Qessoteran ferry camps that fed into the long overland route followed by Wanderer's Wayfarers. His uncle Verzeko brought him into the caravan after Tamas's mother died during a flood, promising that the road would give the boy work and kin. For years Tamas believed that promise. He hauled water, guarded wagons, and learned to bargain by listening for what people left unsaid. During a night crossing, a wagon overturned and trapped two travelers beneath it. Tamas could free only one before the current took the other: he chose Verzeko, his uncle, and has never admitted that the stranger was a child. That choice made him fear being helpless, then resent anyone who saw him as merely a hired muscle. At a dry-season camp, a voice in a flooded cistern offered him power in exchange for small acts of access and information. Tamas accepted, telling himself he would use the pact to win a place in a proper town guard and leave caravan life behind. He dislikes Sorin, a sharp-eyed fellow traveler who has repeatedly challenged his decisions, and regards Sorin's suspicion as an insult. Tamas now passes route details to a network of slave brokers and saboteurs operating from the place locals call Third Marker, named for a survey post that was moved three times. He has begun to understand that their plans will endanger the very people he claims to be escaping.
Role in the story
A capable caravan guard whose desire for an ordinary, secure future has curdled into betrayal. He can be an uneasy ally, a source of route intelligence, or the human-scale threat behind an attempted ambush. His relationship with Verzeko gives the party leverage, while Sorin's suspicions can expose the plot before it is too late.
