Tavri Ulgat
Tavri Ulgat
At the table
“Are you hurt? Are you fed? Then tell me who did it.”
Voice
A warm contralto with a dry, grounded timbre, usually quiet enough that listeners lean toward her. Her laugh is sudden, bright, and embarrassingly youthful.
Low, measured, and precise, with a mountain accent that lengthens certain vowels. She speaks as if every sentence must bear weight. When frightened, she becomes more formal. When genuinely amused, she snorts once and immediately tries to disguise it as a cough.

How to play them
Tavri first evaluates whether the players are dangerous, hungry, indebted, or being exploited. She offers practical help before asking for trust. Honest competence earns her loyalty quickly, while cruelty toward workers or servants makes her cold and immovable. If the players show curiosity about the quarry conspiracy, she tests them with a small errand before revealing anything important.
Goal
Expose the quarry company's corruption, protect the villages targeted for acquisition, and determine what ancient presence lies beneath the planned tunnels.
Motivation
Tavri wants to make exploitation more difficult than solidarity. Beneath that public conviction is a private need to prove that the people lost in the collapse were not merely casualties in someone else's profitable calculation.
Appearance
A young dwarf woman with nearly human proportions, broad through the shoulders and hips but long-limbed enough to move with surprising reach. She stands straight-backed and still, making nearby humans feel oddly hunched by comparison. Her skin has the warm brown tone of sun-baked clay, with a faint dusting of pale freckles across her nose and upper cheeks. Her copper-brown hair is shaved close at the temples and gathered into a thick, meticulously oiled braid that hangs almost to her waist. Tiny brass washers are threaded into the braid, each one stamped with the name of a person she has fed, rescued, or failed. Her hands are heavily callused, but her fingernails are polished and painted with tiny blue geometric marks. She smells faintly of iron, cedar oil, and cardamom. The unexpected contradiction is that her severe, work-worn clothing and powerful physique are paired with an almost delicate habit of moving her hands as if conducting music.
Clothing
A charcoal linen shirt beneath a fitted coat of dark green boiled wool, reinforced with overlapping bronze plates at the shoulders and ribs. Her trousers are tucked into practical leather boots dusted permanently with quarry grit. A red sash holds a carpenter's square, chalk, a small level, and a ring of mismatched keys. She wears a round steel shield painted with a blue spiral representing a mountain spring.
Body language
Tavri stands with her feet planted wide and her chin level, taking up more space than she appears to realize. She keeps one hand near her hammer but never grips it unless violence is already unavoidable. While thinking, she rolls the brass washers in her braid between her fingers. In conversation she leans forward until her shadow touches the other person's boots.

Personality
19 traits and drivesTavri is practical, observant, and fiercely protective, but her sense of responsibility has hardened into control. She is patient with frightened strangers and almost tender with injured animals, yet she becomes severe with family members who make reckless choices. In a crisis she is calm enough to give precise instructions, but after danger passes she may shake, vomit, or sit silently with both hands pressed against a wall. She hates being praised for bravery because she considers survival a debt rather than a virtue. Her generosity is immediate when someone is hungry, but her trust is rationed like water in a collapsed mine.

Background
Tavri was born in the quarry settlement of Ulgat, where her family cut foundation stone for a wealthy human river city. As a child, she learned to read stone by touch before she learned to read letters. At sixteen, a collapse trapped thirty-seven workers beneath a gallery her mother had warned the overseers was unsafe. Tavri spent two days in the dark with six survivors, rationing water by the mouthful and listening to her mother's tapping signal fade on the other side of the rock. When rescue finally came, Tavri emerged carrying a slate on which she had recorded every survivor's name and every unanswered knock. The experience changed her from a cheerful apprentice into a relentless advocate for workers who could not afford to be believed. She now travels as a caravan guard, stone assessor, and occasional debt collector for the Ulgat Mutual Aid Society. Her older brother Dorun thinks she abandoned the family by leaving the mines. Her former mentor, Master Hesk, wants her silent because she possesses proof that he ordered the unsafe excavation. Tavri's current problem is that the same quarry company is quietly buying land beneath several villages, and she has discovered that the planned tunnels may awaken something sealed below the mountains.
Role in the story
Tavri can serve as a grounded ally, a guide through dangerous mines, a witness to industrial corruption, or the first person to warn the party that something ancient is moving beneath the mountains. She may become a recurring companion if the players protect workers and investigate the quarry company. If ignored, she eventually attempts the investigation alone and becomes trapped near the sealed chamber.
