Ulric Fane
Ulric Fane
At the table
Voice
A rough, carrying voice shaped by years of quarry dust and shouting measurements across work crews. He articulates names and numbers with deliberate care, and his laugh is a single gravelly snort.
He speaks in compact, workmanlike sentences, with the clipped cadence of someone accustomed to giving warnings over hammer noise. Quarry grit has left his voice slightly rasped, and years of calling measurements across noisy crews have given it a firm carrying edge. His humor is dry and sudden; when he is angry, he does not lower his voice, but becomes more exact, naming the rule, the risk, and the person responsible.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Ulric begins by asking each visitor's name and purpose, then explains the hazards and records every entrant. He grants permission to enter only after making the Council's safety authority clear. Earn his trust with specific plans, shared risk assessments, or willingness to document findings. He grows immovable if someone tries to excavate or claim the site without a record.
Goal
Document the scree site and secure recognition of the High Council of Masons' safety authority before excavation begins or anyone claims ownership.
Motivation
He wants no one else to die because a warning was ignored or a responsibility left unrecorded. He also wants the Council's authority recognized, partly from duty and partly because formal oversight is the only protection he trusts.
Appearance
Ulric Fane has a broad, squared jaw that makes his whole face seem chiseled from a single block. When he eats, he breaks hard bread with blunt, flat teeth and chews with the patient rhythm of a hand saw; when amused, he laughs in one abrupt snort that shows a surprisingly broad gap between his front teeth. He walks with short, deliberate steps, favoring his left side when the ground slopes, and can stand so still that people mistake him for part of the scaffold. His hands are chalked white at the creases, his nails permanently dark with grit, and he studies a room by looking first at its ceiling. The unexpected detail: he keeps a tiny, brightly painted wooden bird tucked into his collar, a toy he carved for his late sister when he was a boy.
Clothing
A soot-brown work coat with reinforced elbows, a high collar, and deep pockets; a faded green scarf wrapped close against quarry dust; thick trousers tucked into hobnailed boots; and a leather apron scored with old measuring marks. His clothes are clean enough to show care, but never free of grit.
Body language
He plants his feet as if testing a floor for give, keeps his shoulders square to whoever is speaking, and glances upward at every new room. He rarely gestures broadly; instead, he taps a location with the blunt end of a pencil. When he disagrees, his jaw works once before he speaks.

Personality
15 traits and drivesUlric is strict about procedure but not cold toward people: he will halt an expedition for a loose brace, then quietly give his own gloves to a shivering recruit. He distrusts charm and improvisation, yet envies people who can act without rehearsing every possible failure. Around strangers he is formal and guarded; among workers he becomes dryly funny; after a near miss he turns sharp and controlling, then later apologizes by fixing whatever failed.

AC 12 · HP 9 · 30 ft.Ulric is a noncombatant, not a trained adventurer. He avoids a fair fight, uses his hammer only to create space, and tries to get himself and others behind cover or out of unstable ground. He prioritizes warning people about falling stone and will not pursue a fleeing enemy.

Background
Ulric Fane was raised among quarry crews and learned to read stone before he learned to read letters. In his twenties, he helped shore up a half-collapsed bridge during a flood, following his foreman's order to hold a brace while trapped workers were pulled free. The brace shifted, crushed his mentor's leg, and left Ulric with a lasting conviction that good intentions are no substitute for a recorded safety plan. He later joined the High Council of Masons, where he became known for refusing to authorize work until the site, crew, and risks were documented. His sister, Dema, died years ago after a hurried excavation triggered a collapse; he keeps her painted bird as a private memorial. These days he is assigned to the scree site in 'Knocks Beneath the Scree.' He suspects the strange knocks are not random settling, but Council superiors want a quick survey and a clean claim before rival prospectors arrive. He is caught between the Council's authority, the crew's impatience, and the fear that delay may cost lives.
Role in the story
Questgiver and gatekeeper for 'Knocks Beneath the Scree.' Ulric grants the party permission to enter, provides a rope, and writes down each entrant's name. He insists that the High Council of Masons' safety authority be recognized and the site documented before excavation or any claim of ownership.

- Faction
- Stonewright and safety authority of the High Council of Masons. He respects the Council's right to inspect dangerous sites, but distrusts any order that puts speed or ownership ahead of the crew's safety.
