Tian Bo
Tian Bo
At the table
Voice
A chesty, grain-edged voice carries easily over hammer blows, with a little rasp from years of smoke and hot air. He rounds the ends of words when comfortable and clicks his tongue against his teeth before recalling a date or name. The rasp catches sharply when he has to speak through fear, but he does not lower his voice when angry.
He speaks in a friendly, rolling rush, full of concrete examples and side stories. His work has given him a habit of naming the material or tool involved before describing a problem. When something matters, he stops embellishing and lays out the facts in short, precise sentences.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Tian Bo makes visitors feel welcome with tea, a small repair, or a question about their travels. He is warm and talkative, but he guides conversation toward what people know about the Ember Quarter. Respect his craft and his neighbors and he will share useful history; threaten the tenants or demand the altar's secrets and he will become direct, careful, and difficult to distract.
Goal
Keep the Ember Quarter's old altar from being disturbed until he understands what lies beneath it, while finding a way to stop the planned clearance without displacing the people who live there.
Motivation
He believes a neighborhood is more than its buildings, but that its history can protect the living if it is understood before someone tries to profit from it.
Appearance
Tian Bo is a compact, broad dwarf with a square, soot-browned face and burn-scarred forearms that shine taut and reddish when the forge is hot. His beard is braided into three blunt cords, each tied with a different bit of copper wire, and his hair is cropped close around a scalp marked by fine pale flecks of old ash. He stands with his weight tipped toward the balls of his feet, as if ready to turn toward whoever has just entered. His work shirt has been patched at the elbows with mismatched blue cloth, while his little amber pin is polished so carefully it catches the eye before his battered apron does. Unexpectedly, he keeps a tiny, painstakingly tended pot of white clover on the smithy windowsill and stops to turn it toward the morning light.
Clothing
A smoke-stained linen shirt, patched work trousers, thick leather apron, and scuffed boots. His sleeves are rolled above his burn-scarred forearms. A small amber pin is fixed neatly at his collar, the best-cared-for thing he wears.
Body language
He leans forward when listening and uses his soot-marked hands to shape an idea in the air. While waiting, he keeps one foot angled toward the forge or the nearest exit. When he is worried, his thumb rubs the amber pin until its polished face warms.

Background
Tian Bo was apprenticed to a smith who repaired the Ember Quarter's stoves, hinges, and ironwork. He learned its history the practical way: by listening to neighbors argue over whose family had built which wall, then checking their claims against old maker's marks. Years ago, a furnace collapse trapped his mentor and several tenants in a service tunnel. Tian Bo used a forbidden cantrip to draw smoke away from the trapped people, but the effort and the heat blistered both his forearms. His mentor survived long enough to tell him that the Quarter's founding records were deliberately incomplete. Since then, Tian Bo has split his days between smithing and piecing together the district's past. His closest confidante is Yelun, a retired lamplighter who remembers the old altar's renovations; his former apprentice, Oru, now works for a property factor pressing to clear the old shrine. Tian Bo is trying to keep the shrine intact while quietly investigating signs of fresh digging beneath it.
