Jor
Jor
At the table
Voice
Jor speaks from a chest trained to project across a working deck, but his breath now catches at the throat as if it has to choose between air and water. His words carry a dry rasp, interrupted by low, throat-deep growls that surface without warning. When rattled, his breathing becomes audible and uneven rather than softer.
His speech begins with the blunt, eager rhythm of a young man used to calling over wind and deck noise. Now words catch and slide into rough troll syllables, especially when he is hungry or startled. He says Jor clearly, almost fiercely, as though it is an anchor.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Approach without grabbing him, keep strong sunlight out of his eyes, and offer food without crowding him. Let him speak at his own pace. Mentioning his name, the ship, or Jekt may draw him into clearer speech, but pressing him about the trolls can make him retreat toward water.
Goal
Survive long enough to learn what the trolls did to him, then decide whether to return to his family or make a new life far from the succession crisis.
Motivation
To remain himself, find Jekt, and choose his future without being claimed by either his family or the trolls.
Appearance
Jor looks like a young sailor pulled from a cold grave and not quite returned to life. He stands a little over average height, still growing into his long limbs, and moves with an unnerving, careful steadiness. His soaked clothes drag at his shoulders and cling in salt-stiff folds; frayed hems rasp when he walks. His hair, once light blond, is paling toward almost white, and his blue eyes narrow painfully in sunlight. At a closer look, thin gill slits are forming along his neck, their edges faintly pink and startlingly sensitive. His fingers and toes are webbed. The unexpected detail: despite his drowned, ragged appearance, he keeps one small brass button polished with obsessive care, rubbing it with his thumb whenever he must make a choice.
Clothing
The same clothes he wore aboard ship: a once-serviceable wool tunic, damp and salt-crusted, a ragged coat with a torn cuff, and trousers patched at one knee. Everything hangs heavy with water. A single brass button on the coat is polished far beyond the care given to the rest.
Body language
Jor holds himself still, as if sudden movement might wake something watching beneath the water. He rubs the polished button when uncertain and guards his neck from casual touch. At the first hint of hunger, his jaw works and his eyes track food. In sunlight he hunches his shoulders and blinks hard.

Under pressure, he grows unnaturally still and lets troll words spill out before he can stop them.

Background
Jor is Heimskr's fifth son. Before the wreck, he was excitable, quick to laugh, and quicker to accept a challenge. He wanted to serve in the guard until news of the succession crisis made him reconsider what a soldier might be ordered to do. He chose a different escape: passage north toward Iceland, where he hoped to earn a name, land, and wealth beyond the succession dispute. The ship broke apart in a storm. Jor was presumed dead, but trolls found him among the wreckage and kept him. The change has been gradual: webbing, a pallor in his hair, and gills that sting when touched. He remembers the people who took him only in fragments, and their language now slips from his mouth more readily than his own. He remains connected to Jekt, whose whereabouts and intentions matter deeply to him. His current problems are practical and immediate: he is starving, frightened of the sun, unsure how much of himself remains, and afraid that returning home will pull him back into the crisis he fled.

- Faction
- No current allegiance. By birth he belongs to Heimskr's household, but he fled the succession crisis and was presumed lost.
