At the table

Voice

A dry, clear voice with a faint rasp at the back of the throat, as if shaped by cold air and years of speaking across distance. He takes a small breath through his teeth before each sentence. His work as a forest guardian lends his speech careful timing, while the long years of dream communication give his words an odd, image-rich precision.

His sentences are shaped by a guardian's habit of giving warnings and a dreamer's habit of describing what cannot be proved. He favors short declarative statements, then adds precise sensory details. He does not raise his voice to command; he lets a pause make the command difficult to ignore.

Speech patterns

Describes danger through sharp sensory images: a bridge that tastes of pennies, or a forest with no bird-shadow.
Uses direct, plain language when asking for service, then becomes evasive when asked what the task will cost him.
Frames personal requests as practical necessities until pressed about his brother.
Repeats a listener's exact words when he suspects a promise was made carelessly.

How to play them

Approaches through dreams first, offering useful warnings before asking for service. He trades specific knowledge for a clear commitment and remembers every promise. If challenged about his motives, he admits his grief but initially disguises his hope of saving his twin as a tactical concern.

Goal

Cleanse the Suss Forest, destroy Urtogh, and find a way to close the Khesarah Kudlolee gate without killing his twin.

Motivation

Vengeance against Urtogh and the forces corrupting the Suss Forest compete with an enduring, desperate loyalty to his twin.

Appearance

Vezhár appears as a tall, lean fey with the stillness of a heron waiting in reeds. His skin has the matte, finely ridged texture of pale birch bark, interrupted by delicate green lines that shift like reflections on water. His dark hair hangs in narrow, damp-looking locks, each threaded with a single seed or sliver of leaf. He moves without seeming to cross the space between one place and another; people often realize he is beside them only when the air cools. Before speaking, he draws one careful breath through his teeth, then waits just long enough for others to wonder whether he has changed his mind. He wears a tiny, plainly made wooden whistle on a cord, a strangely domestic keepsake for a figure of such ancient power.

Clothing

A weather-dark mantle of layered leaves over a fitted coat of woven bark-fiber, fastened with simple wooden toggles. His cuffs are damp even in dry weather. He carries no crown or jewelry beyond the seed-threaded locks in his hair and a small wooden whistle.

Body language

He leaves more personal space than most people expect, standing just beyond arm's reach and turning slightly sideways rather than squaring up. He holds his hands open when making a request, but closes them slowly when someone mentions his twin. Before speaking, he takes a measured breath through his teeth and pauses. In a dream, his outline leans toward the dreamer even when his feet remain still.

Personality

14 traits and drives

Vezhár is patient enough to let a dream unfold without interruption, yet impatient with anyone who treats a promise as a suggestion. He is compassionate toward frightened people and merciless toward those he believes exploit them. In calm moments he is precise and almost practical; when his brother is mentioned, grief makes him speak in clipped fragments and choose dangerous plans too quickly. He wants to be trusted, but keeps information back because he fears that the truth will make others abandon the task.

Alignment
Neutral, with a fierce and increasingly perilous devotion to family

Quirks

Counts the beats between a question and its answer, then sometimes answers the silence instead.
Turns a fallen leaf over before making a promise, as if checking which side of fate is showing.
Keeps small wooden whistles but refuses to blow them.
When entering a room, briefly faces the nearest window even if it looks onto a blank wall.
Uses the phrase "That is a waking answer" when someone gives him a response he considers evasive.

Habits

Offers urgent warnings as concrete dream images rather than abstract prophecy.
Tests whether a promise is being kept by asking about small details the other person might dismiss.
When distressed, studies the nearest living plant as if expecting it to answer.
Avoids speaking his brother's name unless he is alone or certain the listener will not use it against him.

Traits · 4

Gives careful, compassionate attention to a frightened stranger, then makes a hard demand without softening it.
Prefers patient planning, but grief can drive him into sudden, reckless action.
Values loyalty deeply while concealing information that would let others judge his choices.
Shows a dry, unexpectedly wry humor when discussing the inconveniences of mortal life.

Flaws · 3

His grief makes him interpret practical disagreement as a refusal to help his brother.
He withholds the full cost of his requests until others have already committed.
He can be ruthless toward anyone he believes is serving Urtogh.

Fears · 3

That his twin is beyond saving and he will be forced to destroy him.
That the Khesarah Kudlolee gate will spread its corruption beyond the Suss Forest.
That his dreams are becoming indistinguishable from his memories.

Wants and needs · 4

Needs Gargas to keep his allegiance and act on warnings before the gate's corruption spreads.
Wants proof that his twin can still be reached beneath the Werewolf Lord's corruption.
Needs someone to challenge his plans without dismissing his grief.
Wants Urtogh destroyed and the Suss Forest cleansed.

Combat

AC 16 · HP 112 · 30 ft., climb 20 ft.

Vezhár avoids a fair fight. He uses teleportation and control spells to divide opponents, escape restraints, and protect those he has chosen to shelter. He focuses his strongest attacks on creatures threatening the Suss Forest or Gargas. If faced with the possibility of killing his twin, he hesitates and may spend a turn attempting to break the Werewolf Lord's control instead.

Background

Vezhár and his twin brother were remembered in old fey accounts as guardians of the forest's border, though neither cared for titles. When an orc raiding party threatened Queen Yolande as a child, his brother held the attackers off while Vezhár spirited the child to safety. Vezhár still remembers the child's muddy shoes and the promise he made to bring her back to her family. Years later, the twins were separated. His brother was captured, tortured with cold iron, and twisted into the Werewolf Lord. Vezhár escaped, but has never forgiven himself for leaving his twin behind. The corruption spreading through the Suss Forest and the open Khesarah Kudlolee gate have made that old failure urgent again. He believes destroying his brother may be the surest way to close the gate, but cannot admit that he is still searching for another answer. He granted Gargas Ezroark healing and warlock power in exchange for allegiance, and now reaches him through dreams with warnings about Gurthel-thalanee, Leeh Hollow, and the dangers ahead. He has also directed Gargas to arrange a year-long service between Wilborin Barvalor and Tor Edvard. Each warning costs Vezhár a little of his ability to distinguish his own memories from dreams, and he is increasingly afraid that he will one day mistake his brother's voice for his own.

Role in the story

A powerful but emotionally compromised patron who provides vital dream warnings, directs Gargas toward the Suss Forest, and forces the party to confront whether defeating the Werewolf Lord means killing him or finding a way to save him.
