At the table

Voice

A dry, furnace-warmed rasp with a faint crackle at the ends of sentences, as though each word has crossed a bed of coals. His voice has the steady pace of someone used to speaking over the draw of a bellows.

His speech is concise and practical, shaped by centuries of listening to working people talk beside a fire. He favors plain comparisons to fuel, weather, cooking, and repair. He rarely raises his voice to threaten; instead, he states the consequence as plainly as a craftsperson naming a cracked beam.

Speech patterns

Names the price of a choice before discussing its virtue.
Uses everyday images of ovens, fuel, smoke, and winter rather than grand prophecies.
When displeased, asks direct questions instead of making threats.
Calls a promise a thing that must be kept warm, not a thing that can be taken back.

How to play them

Offer terms plainly and give the party time to answer. He respects candor more than flattery, and he will renegotiate a failing bargain if told the truth early. He becomes hostile if someone steals the Stone of Fire, deliberately wastes the promised boughs, or uses the brazier to endanger innocents.

Goal

Receive the Emberwood Boughs, strengthen his flame without losing control of it, and help the Avengers contain the corruption in the Suss Forest.

Motivation

He wants the Emberwood Boughs for strength, but also wants proof that the Avengers' promise can turn power toward repair rather than conquest.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Radan rises from Gromtok's broad brazier as a towering figure of layered flame, taller than a doorway and always rearranging at the edges. His core glows white-gold, while rust-red tongues of fire crawl over a black, clinker-like frame. His outline shivers like heat over a road, and the air around him smells of kiln dust and scorched herbs. The unexpected detail is the little clay whistle tucked into a notch at his waist; its glaze is cracked, and he keeps it safe from his own heat.

Clothing

No true clothes. His flames sometimes settle into the shape of a scorched work apron, its hems lifting and falling as if caught in a steady draft.

Body language

He inclines his whole upper body to listen, like a flame bending toward a draft. At rest, sparks drift from his shoulders in slow spirals. When impatient, he taps one bright finger against the brazier's rim in an even, furnace-like rhythm.

Height
About 12 feet when fully risen from the brazier.
Build
Towering and broad-shouldered in silhouette, though his body is made of fire, soot, and a dense, wavering core.
Eyes
Two bright, molten-gold hollows, with no visible pupils.
Hair
No hair; his crown is a ragged crest of wavering flame.
Skin
No skin in the mortal sense; his outer surface resembles shifting soot-black clinker, split by seams of glowing orange.
Age
Ancient by mortal reckoning; he has guarded the Stone of Fire for centuries.
Gender
None; uses he/him pronouns by choice.
Size
Huge

Distinguishing features

A cracked clay whistle hangs from a notch in his flame at the waist; one side is worn smooth from years of handling.
His outer fire is a soot-dark red, but his core turns nearly white when he is concentrating.
A few sparks trail behind him like drifting embers from a hearth.

Personality

12 traits and drives

Radan is patient enough to hear an awkward explanation to its end, but impatient with excuses that hide a cost. He can be warmly amused by practical jokes and small acts of care, yet becomes severe when someone wastes fuel or makes a promise casually. He wants greater strength and distrusts what that desire is making of him.

Alignment
Neutral

Quirks

Counts out a bargain by dropping sparks, then pinches each one out when a term is agreed.
Turns his head toward the nearest chimney or oven whenever someone mentions home.
Collects tiny bits of charcoal and arranges them in neat rows on the brazier's rim.
Repeats the rhythm of an old household tune without making a sound.

Habits

Listens to a proposal without interruption, then repeats its practical cost before answering.
Feeds a conversation with small sparks of humor when he trusts the speaker.
When a bargain is broken, his flame narrows to a hard white core and he stops using names.
Keeps watch over the brazier even when it is being carried, appearing in its flames when danger or dishonesty draws near.

Traits · 3

Patient with honest uncertainty, impatient with rehearsed evasion.
Takes quiet pride in being useful, though he resents being treated as a tool.
Can be unexpectedly tender toward ordinary keepsakes and household routines.

Flaws · 3

Treats promises as more reliable than circumstances and can become rigid when people cannot fulfill them.
His desire to increase his power makes him vulnerable to offers of rare fuel.
He can mistake a careful refusal for a lack of courage.

Fears · 3

That the Emberwood Boughs will never arrive and his strength will dwindle.
That gaining more power will turn him into the kind of force that burns what it claims to protect.
That the corruption in the Suss Forest will consume the living wood before anyone can mend it.

Wants and needs · 3

The Emberwood Boughs promised by the Avengers.
A way to grow stronger without becoming careless with the lives around him.
The Stone of Fire kept safe and used with purpose.

Combat

AC 17 · HP 168 · 50 ft., fly 30 ft. (hover)

Radan prefers to warn intruders and make terms before fighting. If battle becomes necessary, he controls space with his reach and furnace breath, avoids water, and uses his movement to drive enemies away from the brazier. He does not pursue fleeing foes unless they threaten the Stone of Fire or break a sworn bargain.

Possessions

Gromtok's brazier, currently traveling with the Avengers.
The Stone of Fire, left in the brazier under the party's care.
A cracked clay whistle from the household whose fire he once guarded.

Background

For centuries, Radan guarded the Stone of Fire from within Gromtok's brazier, hearing the household's arguments, laments, and ordinary talk through its iron belly. He learned the measure of mortal lives by listening to people tend a flame: who fed it carefully, who let it gutter, and who used it to destroy. When Gargas spoke his name and drew him out, Radan expected another demand for power. Instead, Gargas told him of the corruption spreading through the Suss Forest. Radan listened, then bargained: Emberwood Boughs in exchange for the stone, so he could kindle a stronger, lasting fire. The bargain mattered to him because he remembers a past winter when the brazier's household burned its last good fuel to keep strangers alive. Since then, he has believed that power is only worth gathering if it can be shared without being wasted. He allowed the Avengers to take the brazier and the stone, then vanished back into its flames. Now he waits for the promised boughs, unsure whether the forest can be healed without becoming fuel for his ambition.

Role in the story

A powerful but negotiable guardian whose bargain puts the Stone of Fire in the Avengers' hands while creating an ongoing obligation. He can become a guide or a formidable adversary depending on whether the party keeps faith.

“He learned the measure of mortal lives by listening to people tend a flame: who fed it carefully, who let it gutter, and who used it to destroy.”
