Voice

Bram's voice has a dry, slightly rough edge, shaped by damp air, sleepless nights, and years of reading records aloud to check them. Her consonants are crisp and her pace deliberate; when urgency takes hold, the words come in quick, practical bursts rather than a hushed or softened tone.

She speaks in clean, concrete clauses, with dates and sequence words when recounting events. She distinguishes 'I saw' from 'I think' and dislikes being hurried into a conclusion. Her Dutch phrasing occasionally shapes her Common, especially in the order of a sentence, but she is readily understood.

Speech patterns

Begins with what she knows, then labels what she suspects.
Asks, 'Who saw it happen?' when presented with a confident explanation.
Uses exact times and concrete sensory details, but admits when memory is uncertain.
When frightened, speaks faster and repeats the relevant facts as if checking a list.

How to play them

Bram is guarded with strangers but not hostile. She asks specific questions, watches whether answers change under mild scrutiny, and offers practical help before personal trust. She will share verified details from the account if she believes the listener can keep the Seven Stitches safe; she marks uncertain or private passages as restricted.

Goal

Preserve an honest, verifiable account of the incident and its aftermath, then find a way to share it that does not endanger the other six members of the Seven Stitches.

Motivation

To keep fear, memory, and rumor from hardening into a single false explanation, while ensuring the people in the account survive long enough to tell their own versions.

Appearance

Bram is a compact, plainly dressed woman with a watchful stillness that makes her seem to have arrived a moment before everyone else. Her skin has a wind-chapped, papery texture around the knuckles; her dark hair is cut blunt at the jaw and often escapes its pins in damp curls. She smells unmistakably of wet wool, lamp oil, and the sharp anise scent of the cough lozenges she keeps in her pocket, and knows it: she offers one to visitors before they can comment. She walks with short, measured steps, favoring her left side on uneven ground, but moves quickly when a page or person is in danger. A surprising detail for a keeper of grim testimony: she makes elaborate little paper birds from scrap and leaves them on windowsills.

Clothing

A dark, weatherproof wool coat with a repaired lining, a high-necked blouse, sturdy skirt over wool stockings, and scuffed boots. Her cuffs are ink-stained; a narrow waterproof sleeve inside the coat protects her papers.

Body language

Keeps her shoulders square and her hands close to her coat pockets. When listening, she turns her head slightly as if aligning a page with a ruled edge. Her left foot tests uncertain floorboards before she commits her weight. When upset, she sorts objects into precise rows rather than pacing.

Distinguishing features

Smells of wet wool, lamp oil, and anise lozenges; she is aware of it and offers the lozenges before anyone can mention it.
Walks in measured steps and favors her left side on rough ground.
Folds scrap paper into small, intricate birds and leaves them on windowsills.

Personality

12 traits and drives

Methodical and guarded, but more compassionate than her careful questions suggest. She distrusts confident explanations unsupported by evidence, yet hates seeing frightened people cross-examined as if they were suspects. When calm, she is patient and precise; under pressure, she becomes clipped and stubborn, and when someone is grieving she often abandons her notes and simply stays beside them.

Needs the Seven Stitches to agree on what may safely be shared.
Wants an independent witness to review the first account without being told what conclusion to reach.
Needs rest and a place where she can keep her papers dry.

Combat

AC 11 · HP 5 · 25 ft.

Bram avoids combat and prioritizes escape, cover, and protecting the written account. If trapped, she uses her walking stick to create space, throws a knife as a last resort, and calls for help rather than pursuing an opponent.

Changed female. Bram was once male and was altered during the incident; she considers her present body hers, though the change remains central to the group's unresolved questions.
Evidence-minded. Bram separates what she witnessed from what she inferred, and marks uncertain claims in the margins.
Custom feature, Field Archivist. Given ten quiet minutes and usable materials, Bram can produce a reliable timeline of events she observed, including who was present and what remains unverified.

Actions

Walking Stick. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 3 () bludgeoning damage. Bram uses the ferrule of her walking stick and avoids fighting if possible.
Utility Knife. Ranged Weapon Attack: to hit, range 20/60 ft., one target. Hit: 4 () piercing damage. Bram throws a small utility knife only when cornered.

Reactions

Make Space. When a creature Bram can see comes within 5 feet of her or attacks a nearby ally, Bram may use her reaction to interpose her walking stick. The triggering creature must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or have its speed reduced by 10 feet until the end of its turn. This is a custom, non-magical defensive feature.

Services they sell

Can organize witness statements into a chronology.
Can identify contradictions and distinguish direct observation from hearsay.
Can provide temporary refuge through contacts in the Seven Stitches, subject to their consent.

Rewards they can give

A carefully verified timeline of the incident, with disputed details clearly marked.
A discreet introduction to the Seven Stitches, if Bram believes the group will not expose them.
A copy of selected testimony, once Bram has secured the original.

  • Walking stick (tool and improvised weapon)A stout walking stick with a worn brass ferrule, used for balance and, if necessary, to ward off an attacker.
  • First account (document)A narrow, waxed sleeve holding the original account of the incident and its aftermath, wrapped in oilskin.
  • Utility knife (weapon and tool)A plain utility knife for cutting cord and sharpening pencils; Bram dislikes drawing it.

  • Lozenge tin (personal item)Anise cough lozenges in a dented tin.

A concealed duplicate of the account

Background

Before the incident, Bram kept shipping records for a small archives office near a Dutch canal, where she learned that a neat column could conceal a great deal and that dates mattered most when people disputed them. During the incident, she was among those changed into women. She remembers the cold, a smell like struck flint, and a brief silence in which every clock she could hear stopped. She refuses to claim those details explain what happened. In the days afterward, while the displaced survivors argued over whether to flee or seek help, Bram began the first written account: names, times, injuries, absences, and separate sections for observation and speculation. She joined the Seven Stitches, a clandestine survival circle of seven displaced people, and became keeper of that account. She still exchanges careful, tense letters with her former colleague, who believes Bram should return to her old life and publish everything. The circle's healer wants the account destroyed before it exposes them; one member wants it copied and sent abroad. Bram is currently trying to reconcile two witnesses' conflicting accounts of the same hour without making either one a liar.

Role in the story

A cautious witness, information keeper, and moral counterweight to easy explanations. Bram can help the party reconstruct the incident, but the account she guards may reveal that someone in the circle knows more than they have admitted.

“During the incident, she was among those changed into women.”
From their background
Faction
