Bramble
Bramble
At the table
Voice
Bramble's voice is a quick, dry rasp with a little breathiness from years near hot air and soot. She projects from her chest to be heard over the forge, and her consonants strike cleanly, like small tools laid on a bench. When she is excited by a new sound, she runs words together; when recounting the barge fire, she becomes unusually measured.
She speaks in quick, workmanlike phrases, shaped by years of calling over bellows, hammer blows, and the rush of the vent. She clips the ends off words when busy and uses sound words precisely: a tick is not a clink, and a groan is not a rumble. When discussing the vent, her sentences slow into careful measurements.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Bramble is guarded with strangers until they show respect for the work and do not treat her curiosity as childish. Practical help earns her trust quickly. Ask what she has heard and she will share her notes; mock her concern and she will stop volunteering details, then investigate alone.
Goal
Find the source of the vent's changing rumble and convince Kerrik to let her investigate beneath the forge before the flue fails.
Motivation
She wants to prove that careful attention can prevent the kind of loss that once left her father injured, but she also wants to be trusted as more than a pair of quick hands.
Appearance
Bramble is compact even for a halfling, with a spring-loaded way of crossing the shop floor that makes her seem to arrive a half-step before her shadow. Her broad, work-roughened palms are dark with soot, while the tips of her fingers are polished smooth from sorting scrap by touch. She waits with her weight balanced on the balls of her feet, head tilted as if the room is speaking through its pipes. An unexpected detail for a forge hand: she wears a tiny, carefully mended sprig of blue cloth tucked into her apron, the last scrap of a child's blanket she once repaired for a customer.
Clothing
A smoke-brown wool shirt, a patched leather apron with deep pockets, close-fitting trousers, and soft-soled work shoes. She wraps her hair in a faded blue kerchief and wears the mended blue cloth sprig at her apron hem.
Body language
She keeps her feet apart and her knees loose, ready to dart around a hot surface. In conversation she angles one ear toward the vent, and her soot-dark fingers tap out rhythms against her apron when she is thinking.

Personality
13 traits and drivesBramble is intensely curious about practical mysteries but impatient with speculation that has no evidence. She is brisk and teasing when the shop is busy, then becomes solemn and exacting when she hears the vent shift. Around frightened people, she is surprisingly gentle; around authority figures who dismiss her observations, she grows blunt and stubborn. She wants to be useful and fears being useless so much that she sometimes refuses help.

AC 12 · HP 4 · 25 feetBramble is not a trained fighter. She avoids a stand-up fight, uses her speed to put workbenches or larger allies between herself and danger, and throws ash or loose objects to create an opening to escape. She will risk herself to pull someone away from a hot forge or a collapsing vent.

Background
Bramble grew up in a cramped riverside lodging where broken tools were worth more than new ones. Her mother, Hedd, mended pots and hinges; her father, Sten, ferried scrap barges and taught her to tell iron from slag by the sound it made when dropped on a plank. When a barge fire trapped Sten below deck, Bramble froze at the landing, listening to the hull groan instead of calling for help. He survived, but lost the use of one hand, and she has never forgiven herself for the seconds she spent trying to understand the sound. Kerrik took her on at Kerrik's Iron after she correctly sorted a mixed bin of scrap without looking. She keeps the bellows working, sweeps scale, and records the vent's changing rumble in a pocket notebook. Lately, the vent has begun to throb irregularly before dawn, and the forge's draw sometimes reverses for a breath. Kerrik calls it ordinary settling. Bramble suspects something below the shop is breathing through the old flue. She has a careful friendship with the chimney sweep, Rusk, who brings her odd soot samples, and a strained one with her father, who wants her to stop investigating what he calls another sound she cannot fix.
Role in the story
A sharp-eyed local contact and potential early warning for a danger hidden beneath the forge. Bramble can lead the characters toward the vent mystery, but may also need their help to earn Kerrik's trust and investigate safely.
