Nacayo
Nacayo
At the table
“cross-current”
Voice
A dry, weathered voice with a slight rasp from years of calling over surf and wind. He forms words with the clipped precision of someone used to giving instructions across a crowded quay; when he is tired, each sentence ends with a faint breath through his nose.
He speaks in practical phrases, often naming a task before giving an opinion. His words carry the rhythms of dock work: brief calls, clear numbers, and pauses long enough for someone to answer over wind and water.
Speech patterns
How to play them
He offers useful information and practical help before asking anyone to trust him. Show him a credible plan to protect the refugees and he will share his harbor records. Mention the drowned bell tower and he becomes precise, guarded, and eager to recruit capable investigators.
Goal
Keep the Thistlewick Road refugees supplied and organized, then find out what happened to Corwin Ashvale and why the bell tower rings on new moons.
Motivation
To make sure the people who fled Duskmere Hollow are not lost one by one to hunger, fear, or the thing that swallowed their home.
Appearance
Nacayo has a weather-burnished face, broad through the shoulders, with skin roughened by salt spray and wind until it resembles worn sailcloth. His dark hair is cut close at the sides and tied at the nape with a strip of faded green cord. He moves with a measured, slightly rolling gait, as if the ground might shift underfoot. A tiny brass toy boat, incongruously delicate and brightly painted, is always tucked into his breast pocket. He leaves the impression of a man who has been awake too long and still noticed the one rope left unsecured.
Clothing
A patched oilskin coat over a thick wool shirt, a faded green scarf, salt-stiff trousers, and knee-high boots with marsh mud dried in the seams. He wears a brass whistle on a cord and keeps a small slate tied to his belt.
Body language
He stands with his feet planted wide, shoulders pitched forward against an imagined wind. His thumb keeps rubbing a notch in the brass toy boat. He angles his body toward the nearest waterline and turns his whole torso to track movement, rather than flicking his eyes.

Background
Before the black tide, Nacayo kept the harbor at Duskmere Hollow, a quiet fishing village beside the Sallowmere Marsh. He counted each ship twice, once on arrival and again after its ropes were made fast, a habit that saved a crew when a fog bank hid a loose skiff from the quay. The night the black tide came and did not recede, he stayed at the harbor until the water climbed the pilings and swallowed the lower streets. He guided survivors toward the Thistlewick Road, then spent days helping them establish their refugee camp. He now keeps a careful tally of boats, carts, and people who pass through, hoping to learn whether anyone has seen Corwin Ashvale, the merchant who vanished while pursuing the drowned bell tower's new-moon ringing. Nacayo still believes his second count that night was wrong, and that someone was left behind because he trusted his own numbers.
Role in the story
A capable, overworked guide to the refugees and the marsh's waterways. Nacayo can connect the party to survivors, provide routes and supplies, and reveal that the bell's timing may be less predictable than village elders believe.
