Rilka Dovik
At the table
Voice
Rilka's voice has a dry, clear edge, made to carry over rain and harbor clatter without becoming a shout. The consonants are crisp from years of calling directions across docks, while the ends of her jokes often bounce upward as if she expects the listener to catch them. Anger makes her faster and more emphatic, not softer; she starts naming facts like items on a delivery list.
Her speech is clipped by years of running messages through wind and dock noise. She puts the important noun near the start of a sentence, then adds the explanation afterward. Her jokes often arrive as neat little rhymes, but when stakes are real she speaks in short, numbered details.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Rilka starts by trading useful information or a small joke, then listens for what the other person avoids saying. She responds well to clear promises and practical competence. If approached about the wreck, she becomes unusually direct and asks what the speaker would have done in her place.
Goal
Keep the harbor's warning system working and prove that reliable messages can matter as much as a good performance.
Motivation
To turn her guilt about the wreck into something useful by making sure urgent warnings reach people in time.
Appearance
Rilka has the compact, sturdy frame of a rock gnome and moves with a brisk, heel-first stride, as if every floor were a quay she has to cross before the tide turns. Her skin is warm brown with a dusting of pale freckles across the bridge of her nose. Her hair is dark auburn, cropped unevenly at the jaw and combed into place with a stubborn stripe of wax. She keeps her grooming almost absurdly exact, trimming the ends of her hair with a tiny pair of shears when she is thinking. A brass tuning fork hangs from her belt on a frayed cord; its handle is polished bright by her thumb, but one prong is flattened from years of being struck against stone. She looks at first like a practical little courier, then opens her mouth and makes a room feel like a stage.
Clothing
A faded green waistcoat over a cream shirt, patched brown trousers, and a short rain cape with shell buttons. Her boots are stout and carefully oiled. A narrow red sash holds her instrument, courier tubes, and the brass tuning fork.
Body language
She keeps her elbows tucked in around strangers, but claims space with her chin and a sharp turn of the shoulders once she begins performing. When uncertain, she rubs the flattened prong of her tuning fork with her thumb. She has a habit of leaning toward a listener as if sharing a secret, then stepping back before they can answer.

Personality
14 traits and drivesRilka is quick to entertain and slow to trust her own judgment. In a crowd she is bold, funny, and generous with attention; alone with someone she has hurt, she becomes exacting and awkward, as if every word must be properly delivered. She can be impatient with hesitation but will spend an hour checking a message that matters. Her humor invites people in, while her habit of turning every failure into a lesson can make forgiveness feel like another task on her list.

AC 14 · HP 10 · 25 ft.Rilka prefers to stay behind sturdier allies, using Vicious Mockery to disrupt attackers and Faerie Fire to expose concealed enemies. She spends Bardic Inspiration early when an ally's success could change the fight, and uses Healing Word to bring a fallen companion back into action. If cornered, she retreats toward cover rather than trying to trade blows.

Background
Rilka grew up in a cramped room above the now-quiet bell foundry in Kettlewick, where her mother, Tamsin, repaired warning bells and her father, Olek, ferried parcels between the harbor and inland farms. As a child, Rilka learned to identify boats by the pitch of their bells and learned songs from the crews who waited for repairs. She became a runner for the foundry, carrying messages and inventing rhymes to remember orders. At nineteen, a fogbound ferry ignored the harbor's warning bell and struck a submerged piling. Rilka had been asked to deliver the bell's repair notice, but stopped to perform for dockhands and arrived too late. Her friend Padrig was injured in the wreck, and the guilt changed her from a carefree performer into someone who checks every message twice. She now earns a living carrying urgent news, playing in taverns, and using jokes to make people listen to warnings they would rather ignore. Her mother wants her to take over the foundry's dwindling repair work. Padrig, now a ferry pilot, still trusts her with messages but refuses to let her near the warning bell mechanism. Meanwhile, a rival courier, Kosta, has begun offering faster deliveries by taking dangerous shortcuts.
