Dethis
Dethis
At the table
Voice
Dethis speaks from the chest, with a dry rasp at the edges from years of shouting through wet air and river spray. Her consonants land sharply, especially when she gives directions; a brief breathy hiss sometimes follows her s sounds. Her laugh is startlingly open and toothy, nothing like the controlled voice she uses on a trail.
Her words are clipped and well-spaced, shaped by years of calling directions over water and through rain. She favors ordinary verbs and precise distances; when rattled, old river-guide shorthand slips into her Common. She rarely raises her voice, but can project a command cleanly across a crowded landing.

How to play them
She offers practical help before asking for trust: water, a route, or a safe place to sleep. Give her a clear account of what happened to the captives and she will share her tracking knowledge. If the party pursues the shrine rubbing at the expense of the prisoners, she will confront them directly, but she can be persuaded by a credible plan that protects both.
Goal
Rescue the three treasure hunters alive, then determine whether their shrine rubbing can identify where her brother died.
Motivation
She wants to make the people she failed to save matter, but fears that this is only a respectable name for revenge.
Appearance
Dethis has warm umber skin, a long, narrow face, and a jaw that shifts visibly to one side when she chews. Her front teeth are broad and slightly ridged, giving her laugh an unexpectedly toothy, almost reptilian look. She walks with a measured, heel-first stride, favoring her right side as if always keeping her left shoulder free to turn toward an exit. In a crowd she seems restless; when danger appears, she can go so still that even her bowstring stops trembling.
Clothing
A close-wrapped indigo shirt, reed-fiber trousers, a weather-darkened leather vest, and a short rain cloak fastened high so it cannot snag in vines. Her boots are patched with mismatched scales of river hide.
Body language
She angles her left shoulder toward open space, keeps her weight on the balls of her feet, and touches two fingers to her lower jaw while considering a lie. When pleased, she laughs with her whole face and shows her conspicuously broad front teeth.

Background
Dethis grew up guiding river traders through the fever-green waterways around Sour-Reed Cut, a channel blasted through dense reeds to connect two old settlements. Her mother, Adeva, taught her to read bent grass and bird alarm calls; her father, Temu, taught her to draw a bow without startling the fish. At twenty, she led an expedition hired to retrieve a carved idol from a flooded shrine. The expedition found a yuan-ti patrol instead. Dethis escaped, but her younger brother, Oru, was taken. For years she hunted the patrol's routes and learned their hand signs and marching habits. She eventually discovered Oru had died during a failed escape, a fact she still cannot make herself tell their mother. Now she works with Cicada Thaw, a loose circle of guides and rescuers, and has tracked three treasure hunters into a yuan-ti holding site. One of them carries a rubbing that may reveal the shrine where Oru died. Her old rival, Mialo, argues that the captives matter more than the map; Dethis knows he is right and hates that he is right.
Role in the story
A veteran tracker already pursuing the three treasure hunters' captors. She can guide the party to the yuan-ti holding site, but the captives' map rubbing forces her to choose between immediate rescue and a chance to learn what happened to her brother.
