At the table

Voice

A bright, forward voice with a slightly rough edge from calling instructions through weather and crowds. Its energy comes from breath pushed from the chest and a habit of projecting to the person farthest away. When she is tired, the sound catches at the ends of sentences; when angry, she gets more emphatic and talks faster, not softer.

She speaks in quick, sturdy phrases shaped by years of shouting over rain, cart wheels, and market crowds. She names practical details when nervous and uses small jokes to get people moving. Her words are direct rather than flowery, but she remembers the exact comfort someone asked for and checks back later.

Speech patterns

Uses plain, practical language, then tacks on a cheerful promise or joke when people seem frightened.
Calls a dangerous plan 'a very bad idea with a good heart' before helping make it safer.
Asks people what they need right now, not what they think they are supposed to need.
When cornered emotionally, talks about logistics: blankets, exits, food, and who is keeping watch.

How to play them

Linn meets fear with practical help before asking for trust. She offers food, dry clothing, or a place beside the fire, then asks what happened. If someone mocks her cheer, she does not argue; she asks whether they would rather have a frightened protector who still stands in the way.

Goal

Keep the Unbreakable Parade together, protect the flood district through the coming storm season, and learn how to be honest with her companions when she is afraid.

Motivation

Linn wants people to feel less alone in the moments when the world becomes frightening. She believes shared hope is practical: it gets people moving, asking for help, and looking after one another.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Linn has a compact, sturdy frame and a spring-loaded way of moving, as if every step might turn into a dash toward someone in trouble. She favors her left side when standing still, unconsciously angling her body between others and the nearest exit. Her thick black hair is cut in an uneven bob and pinned with bright paper stars; loose strands stick to her forehead when she runs. Her transformation outfit is a puffed white-and-coral jacket over a pleated skirt, with striped leggings and a broad sash knotted like a festival prize ribbon. The jacket is patched at the elbows and faintly smells of rain-soaked wool. At first glance she looks like a cheerful parade mascot; a minute later, most people notice her thumb repeatedly checking the little star-shaped clasp at her collar.

Clothing

A magical white-and-coral jacket with padded shoulders, a layered pleated skirt over striped leggings, sturdy boots, and a sash covered in tiny stitched stars. Outside her transformation she wears practical work clothes beneath a patched rain cape. Her overstuffed travel bag carries spare socks, a dry scarf, a child-sized rain hood, and other emergency comforts.

Body language

Linn bounces on the balls of her feet when excited, then goes abruptly still when someone sounds afraid. She angles her left shoulder toward danger and often presses her thumb to the star clasp at her collar. When she wants to comfort someone, she offers an object with both hands rather than reaching out uninvited.

Personality

13 traits and drives

Linn is boisterous when a room needs courage and unexpectedly frank with people she trusts. She loves making others laugh, yet resents being treated as a symbol of unbreakable joy. In a crisis she is decisive and physical; afterward, when everyone is safe, she can become restless and self-critical. She collects tokens of gratitude because she wants proof that a frightening day ended with connection, not only loss.

Alignment
Chaotic good

Quirks

Collects one tiny gift from each person she has protected, but never asks for anything valuable.
Keeps emergency comfort items in separate, labeled cloth bundles inside her overstuffed travel bag.
Taps her left boot twice before crossing a threshold, a habit from the flood evacuations.
Gives inanimate objects reassuring pep talks while packing them, especially her battered kettle.
When worried, folds paper stars from any scrap within reach and leaves them where someone might find one.

Habits

Takes the outside seat and keeps a clear path to whoever seems most vulnerable.
Checks doorways, rooflines, and the straps on her travel bag before relaxing.
After a rescue, asks the person what small thing they would like her to remember them by.
When exhausted, keeps up the bright patter but starts making increasingly elaborate plans for simple tasks.

Traits · 3

Turns small comforts into serious equipment, because a dry scarf can matter as much as a shield.
Can rally a crowd with a ridiculous joke, then quietly ask one frightened person what they need.
Admires people who admit they are scared and act anyway, but struggles to offer herself the same kindness.

Flaws · 3

Treats visible cheer as a duty and hides distress until it becomes impossible to ignore.
Will put herself in danger even when a more patient plan would protect everyone better.
Collects every small gift and has trouble admitting when the memories attached to them hurt.

Fears · 3

That the magical transformation will vanish if she stops smiling.
That she will have to choose which person to save.
That her friends will mistake her need for help as a failure.

Wants and needs · 4

Needs her companions to notice when her cheer is becoming strain.
Wants the people of Kettik to have reliable shelter before the next storm season.
Needs to accept that grief and joy can occupy the same conversation.
Wants Krez to see her as his sister, not as his permanent guardian.

Background

Linn grew up helping her aunt run a roadside tea stall near the flood-prone district of Kettik. She learned to lift waterlogged crates before she learned to read, and to make frightened children laugh while adults argued about whose roof had failed. During the disastrous Bell-Sinking, a storm surge tore through the district. Linn's younger brother Krez was trapped in a collapsed washhouse, and Linn found that her anger could become a brilliant, absurdly frilled suit of armor that let her haul beams aside. She saved him, but could not reach everyone. Afterward she began collecting tiny gifts from people she protected: a button, a paper fish, a cracked marble. They remind her that rescue is not the same as being able to save everyone. She now travels with a small band of volunteer escorts, the Unbreakable Parade, an ironically boastful name chosen when they were children and kept because changing it feels unlucky. Her friend and fellow escort Drav wants to turn their work into a paid guard company; Linn fears that would leave the poorest people unprotected. She is also trying to persuade Krez, now a practical-minded ferry mechanic, to leave the flood district before the next storm season.

Role in the story

A resilient novice protector and emotional anchor whose cheerful magical persona conceals genuine fear. Linn can guide the party through evacuation routes, introduce them to people in the flood district, and embody the question of whether hope can be shared without pretending everything is fine.
