Strahd von Zarovich
Strahd von Zarovich
At the table
Voice
A dry, clear voice with the faint scrape of stone on stone, trained to carry across a hall without shouting. Its measured rhythm comes from courtly instruction and battlefield command; anger strips away the ceremony and leaves precise, cutting statements.
His voice carries the dry resonance of a stone hall: every consonant lands cleanly, with a faint rasp from centuries of cold air and disuse. He speaks at an even pace, shaped by courtly schooling and the clipped commands of a veteran officer. When angered, he does not soften or hush; he becomes more direct, and his words lose their ceremonial framing.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Meet courtesy with courtesy and answer questions as if they deserve consideration. Offer a useful favor with an exact condition attached. He prefers to recruit, tempt, or unsettle the party before using violence, and may let an insult pass if it gives him a better opportunity later.
Goal
Keep his domain obedient while finding a way to make one person choose him freely, though he cannot imagine how to permit that choice.
Motivation
To prove that his rule is necessary and that his love, however possessive, was not merely another form of appetite.
Appearance
Strahd is arrestingly handsome in the manner of a portrait that has begun to notice its audience. His pale skin has the smooth, cool sheen of polished marble, and his dark hair lies in precise waves that do not shift even when the wind worries his cape. He stands with his weight settled evenly, as if the floor itself had been instructed to hold him. When he eats, he cuts each bite into exact squares and never shows his teeth; when he laughs, his jaw opens a fraction too far, revealing small, immaculate fangs. His elegance makes every movement seem chosen, and his stillness leaves the impression that the room is moving around him.
Clothing
A black riding coat fitted close at the waist, a high white collar, dark gloves, and a wine-colored cape lined in faded gold. His boots are immaculate, even after a ride through mud.
Body language
He gives his full attention with unnerving steadiness, head slightly inclined and hands folded behind his back. He seldom points; instead, he turns his palm upward, making a command look like an invitation. When irritated, his jaw works once as if testing a bite, and his weight shifts toward the person who has displeased him.

Distinguishing features
Personality
13 traits and drivesStrahd can be gracious and genuinely attentive when a guest surprises him, yet regards most people as pieces in a private game. In public he is measured, cultivated, and almost solicitous; when thwarted, he becomes bluntly brutal rather than losing control. He is capable of tenderness toward old memories, but that tenderness turns possessive as soon as the living person in front of him fails to match them.
- Alignment
- Lawful and predatory; he prizes order because it lets him call possession a duty.

Possessions
Background
Strahd was born to a ruling house and raised to treat affection as another form of governance. He became a capable commander, but the war that secured his inheritance took the years and tenderness he had imagined spending in peace. When his younger brother Sergei returned with a bride-to-be, Strahd became consumed by the belief that youth, love, and his own lost future had been stolen from him. He bargained for immortality and murdered Sergei on the day of the wedding. The woman he desired fled rather than accept him, and the land itself closed around Strahd like a sentence. Centuries later, he rules from his castle, maintaining ceremonies, roads, and a court that is mostly an audience of the dead. He still receives petitions from the living, particularly when their problems let him play the benevolent lord. He has kept a place setting for Sergei at the winter table and cannot bring himself to remove it. His current trouble is a growing refusal among the villages to send tribute, encouraged by a priest who remembers the names of Strahd’s earliest victims.
Role in the story
A sovereign antagonist whose refinement makes his brutality more unsettling. He can serve as a patron, tempter, host, or final threat, and his history gives the party leverage without making him harmless.
“He became a capable commander, but the war that secured his inheritance took the years and tenderness he had imagined spending in peace.”
- Faction
- Sole ruler of his ancestral domain; the castle household and tribute-taking officials serve him from fear, habit, or both.
