Toke
Toke
At the table
Voice
A chest-resonant voice with a dry rasp from smoke and cold mornings. It carries clearly across a work yard, shaped by years of calling over chopping and crackling fire. When nervous, he over-enunciates names and place words; when relaxed, his phrases tumble together in a familiar local cadence.
His Saxon speech is practical and compact, with local turns of phrase learned around hearths and work yards. He speaks faster when excited and clips the ends of words when impatient. He is still getting used to the lower, rougher resonance of his changed body; a brief catch sometimes appears when he is tired or caught off guard.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Toke responds best to direct questions, shared work, and a place by the fire. He distrusts probing questions about his body or past from strangers. If treated with respect, he will offer food, practical help, and blunt counsel; if cornered by authority, he becomes evasive and looks for an exit.
Goal
Find the scattered Seven Hearths and learn what happened at the ruined kiln without exposing himself to those who would punish or exploit him.
Motivation
Loyalty to the people who gave him a place to belong, and a need to decide for himself what his transformation means.
Appearance
A broad-shouldered young Saxon with a work-hardened stance, Toke moves as if every doorway might be too low and every conversation might turn into a dare. His weather-reddened skin is roughened by smoke, wind, and the sting of winter chores; soot gathers in the creases beside his nose and along his knuckles. His short beard grows unevenly, and his hair is usually tied back with a strip of worn linen. He smells faintly of peat smoke, damp wool, and iron. A small wooden horse hangs at his belt, its muzzle polished almost white from years of nervous thumb-rubbing. Unexpectedly, he keeps a sprig of tiny white heath flowers tucked into his belt when they are in season, replacing it if it wilts.
Clothing
A smoke-dark wool tunic, patched trousers, a weather-stained cloak pinned with a plain bone toggle, and sturdy boots repaired with mismatched leather. He dresses for labor and cold, not display, and keeps a spare shirt rolled beneath his bed.
Body language
Plants his feet wide and squares his shoulders when challenged, then catches himself and relaxes when he realizes a friend is only teasing. His thumb rubs the worn muzzle of the wooden horse at his belt when he is thinking. Around authority figures, he keeps his hands visible and close to his body; around trusted companions, he leans in and interrupts freely.

In a friendly mood he jokes with a dry, practical edge; under scrutiny he grows guarded and precise, while anger makes him more direct and physically energetic rather than quiet.

Combat
AC 11 · HP 8 · 30 ft.Toke is an untrained commoner, not a practiced warrior. He blocks a narrow doorway with his body, swings a wood-axe only to make space, and prioritizes getting threatened people behind him. If escape is possible, he takes it. His heritage currently offers no dependable combat benefit.

Background
Toke grew up among the small Saxon hearths scattered along the wooded approaches to the Harz, learning to split kindling, bank coals, and judge a stranger by how they treated a shared meal. Before the change, he was one of two women among a close circle of displaced friends who called themselves the Seven Hearths, though the fellowship was never a formal band and has never had seven members at once. A Walpurgis-night storm drove the group into a ruined kiln. At dawn, Toke woke in a stronger, biologically male body, with a rough voice, new facial hair, and unfamiliar hungers and impulses. His old memories remained his own. The change frightened him, then angered him, and eventually became something he had to live with rather than explain. Since then he has used his Saxon name and a male presentation; in this time and place, openly claiming his former identity could invite coercion, punishment, or dangerous religious scrutiny. His companions scattered after the kiln night. He now keeps a hearth near the Harz, feeding travelers and listening for news of them, while local clergy ask increasingly pointed questions about the strange lights seen in the hills.
Role in the story
A grounded local ally whose hearth gives the party shelter and access to rumors. His transformation, missing companions, and uncertain heritage can draw the characters into a mystery, while his everyday needs keep the story rooted in food, weather, work, and safety.
