Gerenoa
Gerenoa
At the table
Voice
Her voice carries a light rasp from years of shouting across windy clearings, with the crisp consonants of someone drilled in formal court speech. Her name, Gerenoa, is long and flowing when she says it herself, though she clips the final syllable when impatient.
Her sentences are clear and ceremonially careful when she is being watched, but she slips into quick, practical questions once she feels safe. She names ordinary details precisely, especially the direction and feel of wind. When excited, she stacks questions without waiting for answers.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Treat her as a person rather than a prophecy or a child to be managed. Offer a concrete choice, explain the risk plainly, and let her ask questions. She responds well to practical help and honesty. Threats against the forest or her companions make her guarded and determined, not magically powerful.
Goal
Find the source of the ash-bearing wind, learn what happened to her father, and earn the forest's trust without letting the court use her as a convenient emblem.
Motivation
She wants to be worthy of the forest's trust, not merely entitled to its throne.
Appearance
Gerenoa looks unmistakably like a child, but the air around her never quite settles. Her tawny skin has a soft, barklike grain along the shoulders, and fine scales glint there when sunlight catches them. Her copper-brown hair lifts and shifts as if a breeze is combing it from below. She waits with her weight on the balls of her feet, rocking almost imperceptibly toward whatever has just spoken. Her royal clothes are carefully mended and plainly made, except for one absurdly fine detail: the cuffs are embroidered with tiny, precise maps of beetle trails. The most surprising thing about the forest's heir is that she keeps a battered wooden spoon tucked in her sash and insists it is a queen's proper tool for tasting soup before anyone else does. People leave a meeting with the impression that she was listening to the room's air as closely as its words.
Clothing
A green wool tunic, patched brown leggings, a short mantle fastened with a wooden clasp, and soft boots with visibly replaced soles. Her cuffs carry intricate beetle-trail embroidery, the one luxurious flourish she refuses to explain. A battered wooden spoon rides in her sash.
Body language
She stands with her weight tipped forward, ready to follow a sound or a person who might leave. When thinking, she rolls the wooden spoon between both palms. In a formal audience she tries to keep her chin high, but her feet swing beneath the chair; when frightened, she grips her sash and watches the nearest doorway.

Background
Gerenoa was born where a wind avatar elf, a dragonkin wanderer, a forest-kin keeper, and a human envoy once made an uneasy pact to prevent a border war. The adults called her a sign of unity; the forest called her by turning every leaf in the clearing toward her cradle. Her mother, the wind avatar elf, died during a gale that shattered the old canopy bridge. Her father, a dragonkin, left soon afterward to seek the source of the storm and has not returned. The forest-kin keeper, Iru, became her guardian and teaches her the names of roots, while human envoy Pello visits with news of the settlements and tries to keep the court from treating her like a treaty written in flesh. At age five, Gerenoa wandered into a blighted grove during a formal succession rite. She found a trapped fox and chose to break the ceremony's sacred boundary to free it. The grove began to recover that same season, changing her understanding of rule: she believes a rightful queen must answer the living world, not merely inherit a title. Now rival elders argue that a child cannot hold the crown, while the forest's old paths are closing and the wind has begun to carry ash from somewhere beyond the borders. Gerenoa wants to find her father, protect the forest, and learn whether the succession rite failed or recognized her in a way the elders cannot control.
Role in the story
A young heir whose claim may depend less on bloodline than on the choices she makes. She can be a vulnerable ally, a political responsibility, or the focus of a succession crisis, while her own concerns remain personal and immediate.
“The adults called her a sign of unity; the forest called her by turning every leaf in the clearing toward her cradle.”
- Faction
- The Dragonwind forest's hereditary court, though its elders dispute whether a child can exercise the crown's authority.
