At the table

“That plan has a weak support.”
From how they speak

Voice

A deep, chest-driven rasp with a dry edge, like gravel pushed over a steel plate. His volume carries across a noisy worksite without theatrical shouting. When angry, he gets more direct and uses shorter sentences, not softer ones.

His words come from deep in his chest with a dry, gravelly rasp, shaped by years of shouting over quarry machinery and shield-line clashes. He clips the ends of sentences when time matters and uses plain work terms instead of grand military language. His laugh is a sudden booming bark, while grief makes him speak in complete, careful sentences and name details others would skip.

Speech patterns

Uses short, concrete sentences, often framed as a practical question: "How many behind you?"
Calls people by their work or the task they are doing until he knows them well.
Uses quarry and repair metaphors: "That plan has a weak support."
When speaking of his brother, stops using jokes and names the specific thing he remembers instead.

How to play them

Treat Barrel as a blunt professional rather than a berserker. He respects clear plans, competent craft, and people who protect those with less power. He warms to anyone who checks on the injured before claiming victory. A sincere question about Harn or the blue bird can open a personal conversation, but pressing him to confess guilt in public will make him shut down and offer a task instead.

Goal

Find who is selling the old quarry evacuation routes, stop the caravan attacks, and repair his relationship with Sella without asking her to excuse his choices.

Motivation

To keep ordinary people from being made to pay for a leader's delay, and to prove through deeds that strength can shelter rather than dominate.

Appearance

Barrel is a towering, exceptionally broad dwarf whose magical plate makes him look less like a man in armor than a walking breach in a fortress wall. His beard and hair are braided in thick ropes of black, iron-red, and golden blond, the colors divided in clear bands like strata in a cliff face. The beard is tied with blunt copper rings and flattened by years of rubbing against his gorget. His skin is weathered bronze, deeply lined at the eyes, and powdered with forge soot that never quite washes away. His armor is dark, oiled steel, layered with blunt-backed spikes and keen, carefully maintained blades; its edges catch light in brief, cold flashes. He walks with a heavy, measured heel-to-toe tread, then can suddenly drop his center of gravity and charge like a cart breaking loose downhill. He keeps a tiny knitted blue bird tucked into a loop inside his gorget, a startlingly gentle scrap against all that steel. Within a minute, people notice his eyes sweep doorways, ceiling beams, and floor gaps before they ever settle on a face.

Clothing

A custom suit of dark magical full plate over a quilted charcoal gambeson, built with overlapping plates, blunt spikes, and razor-edged vanes along the shoulders, forearms, and thighs. He wears a red wool sash beneath the breastplate and heavy hobnailed boots. His beard is bound with copper rings, and a tiny blue knitted bird sits inside his gorget.

Body language

Barrel plants his feet as if the ground has asked him to hold it. In conversation, he turns his whole armored torso toward whoever is speaking, but his eyes keep measuring exits and overhead weight. When amused, he taps two fingers against the blue knitted bird inside his gorget. When challenged, he lowers his chin and rolls one shoulder, making the blades on his armor scrape together like a door being barred.

Personality

14 traits and drives

Barrel is decisive when danger is visible and awkward when the danger is grief. He jokes freely around workers and children, but turns rigidly methodical when someone is hurt. He is proud of his strength yet distrusts anyone who treats strength as a moral virtue. He can endure a brutal fight without complaint, then lose his temper over a careless promise or a worker denied fair pay.

Alignment
Lawful good, though his methods are rough and his patience is finite

Quirks

Counts door hinges under his breath while waiting for a meal.
Taps the flattened beak of his knitted bird whenever he has to make a difficult choice.
Apologizes to doors after catching a spike on their frames.
Arranges tools by the sound they make when set down, not by size.
Will not sit with his back to a window, even in a friendly home.

Habits

Before entering a room, checks the lintel, floor, and the farthest exit in that order.
When relaxed, oils a section of armor that is already clean, especially the left shoulder blade.
In danger, gives one short warning and then commits fully to the charge.
After a fight, checks the fallen for breathing before he checks his own injuries.
When ashamed, becomes practical and offers repairs, food, or a job instead of an apology.

Traits · 4

He is warm and teasing with children, but formal and all business with officials.
He dislikes being praised for bravery, yet quietly keeps every note from people he has escorted to safety.
He wants to be seen as reliable, but resents being treated as an implement that can simply be pointed at a problem.
He is patient with clumsy apprentices and impatient with experienced people who refuse to admit a mistake.

Flaws · 4

He mistakes taking the most dangerous position for making amends.
He can be slow to trust plans that do not put a solid barrier between danger and civilians.
His pride in his armor makes him reluctant to retreat even when retreat is the wiser choice.
He offers practical help to avoid emotional conversations.

Fears · 3

Being trapped beneath rubble while others wait for him to choose whom to save.
Discovering that his old maps directly enabled the caravan attacks.
That he has made himself useful as a weapon because he cannot imagine how else to be loved.

Wants and needs · 3

He wants to know who is supplying the raiders with old route information.
He needs to accept help without treating it as a debt to repay.
He wants Sella to believe that he can be more than a weapon in a doorway.

Combat

AC 22 · HP 248 · 25 ft.

Barrel tries to control the narrowest route to the enemy, then uses his armor and weight to break their formation. He attacks the most immediate threat to a vulnerable ally, spending Action Surge when a decisive opening appears. He uses Spiked Roll to topple a cluster or cross a dangerous gap, but avoids it near civilians or allies. Against a single powerful foe, he stays close, denies room to maneuver, and saves Indomitable for a disabling effect that would remove him from the fight.

Dwarven Resilience. Barrel has advantage on saving throws against poison and resistance to poison damage.
Dwarven Combat Training. Barrel is proficient with battleaxes, handaxes, light hammers, and warhammers.
Second Wind (1/short rest): As a bonus action, Barrel regains hit points.
Action Surge (1/short rest): Barrel can take one additional action on his turn.
Indomitable (3/long rest): Barrel rerolls a failed saving throw and must use the new result.
Extra Attack. Barrel attacks four times when he takes the Attack action.
Improved Critical. Barrel's weapon attacks score a critical hit on a roll of 19 or 20.
Remarkable Athlete. Barrel adds half his proficiency bonus, rounded up, to Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution checks that do not already include his proficiency bonus.
Custom, Razor Mantle. Once on each of Barrel's turns when he moves at least 10 feet straight toward a creature and hits it with a melee attack, the target takes an extra slashing damage. The target must succeed on a Strength saving throw or be pushed 5 feet and knocked prone.
Custom, Spiked Roll (Recharge 5-6): Barrel moves up to 20 feet in a straight line without provoking opportunity attacks. Each creature whose space he enters or passes through must make a Dexterity saving throw, taking piercing damage and falling prone on a failure, or taking half damage without falling prone on a success. Barrel cannot end this movement in an occupied space.
Custom, Living Bulwark. While wearing his magical armor, Barrel has advantage on checks and saving throws made to resist being shoved or knocked prone.

Actions

Multiattack. Barrel makes four attacks with his spiked maul or Razor Mantle.
Spiked Maul. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: bludgeoning damage, or if used with two hands. Once per turn, a hit can trigger Razor Mantle for an additional slashing damage if its movement condition is met.
Spiked Roll (Recharge 5-6). Barrel uses Spiked Roll, if available. Each creature in his path makes a Dexterity saving throw, taking piercing damage and falling prone on a failure, or half damage on a success.
Second Wind. Barrel regains hit points as a bonus action. He can use this once before finishing a short or long rest.
Action Surge. Barrel takes one additional action on his turn. He can use this once before finishing a short or long rest.

Reactions

Custom, Interposing Plate. When a creature Barrel can see hits an ally within 5 feet of him, Barrel imposes himself between them. The ally gains a bonus to AC against that attack, potentially causing it to miss. Barrel must be wearing his Razor Mantle.
Custom, Brace and Rise. When Barrel is pushed or knocked prone, he can use his reaction to brace. He reduces forced movement against himself by up to 10 feet, or stands from prone without spending movement.
Opportunity Attack. When a creature within 5 feet of Barrel moves away, he can make one melee weapon attack against it, as normal for an opportunity attack.

Services they sell

Escort people through dangerous roads, mines, and active battle lines.
Train a willing fighter in close-quarters positioning and holding a chokepoint.
Inspect armor, reinforce field repairs, and assess whether a tunnel or gate is likely to hold.

Rewards they can give

Barrel can arrange safe passage through old quarry roads and knows how to identify unstable tunnels.
He can help repair or reinforce armor and shields, and can teach a character practical techniques for fighting in confined spaces.
If the party earns his trust, he shares the map fragment and introduces them to Sella's shelter, where displaced workers may offer information or support.

The blue knitted bird tucked inside his gorget.
A small purse of wages set aside for Sella's shelter.

Background

Barrel was born in a quarry settlement where his mother cut stone and his father repaired mining lifts. He learned that heavy things do not forgive careless hands, and that a wall can protect a family or trap it. At forty, he joined the hold's shield line. During the Siltwake Collapse, a tunnel gave way while refugees were being evacuated. Barrel braced a failing support with his own body long enough for the trapped miners to crawl out, but the delay cost his older brother, Harn, his life. Barrel survived, and the experience changed his idea of courage: he stopped treating survival as proof that he had made the right choice. He trained as a champion and worked with armorers to build a suit that could hold a narrow passage against a rush of enemies. Its spikes began as a desperate measure, then became the signature of his battlefield style. Now he serves as a wandering escort and crisis-breaker, hired to extract people from sieges, cave-ins, and monster-haunted roads. His closest tie is to Sella, a former squadmate who runs a shelter for displaced miners and believes Barrel's armor makes him too willing to solve every danger by becoming a weapon. He sends her money and avoids visiting. His current trouble is a string of attacks on quarry caravans by raiders using a route only someone familiar with his old evacuation maps would know.

Role in the story

A formidable ally, rival, or obstacle whose close-combat expertise can protect a party or complicate a stealthy plan. His investigation into the caravan attacks ties his old service to the current threat, while his unresolved relationship with Sella offers a personal stake beyond the fight.

“He learned that heavy things do not forgive careless hands, and that a wall can protect a family or trap it.”
From their background
Faction
Former member of the Kettlefall shield line, a local militia named after an old quarry accident outsiders wrongly tell as a story about a dropped cooking pot. Currently works independently and remains informally loyal to Sella's miners' shelter.

Known connections

Sella, an old shield-line companion, now shelters displaced miners and regularly challenges Barrel to help without turning every problem into a charge.
Harn, Barrel's dead older brother, died during the Siltwake Collapse; Barrel keeps one of Harn's old quarry chits in his boot.
Miri, a young apprentice armorer, maintains the hidden locking pins in Barrel's armor and insists he bring it in for inspection before the next campaign.
A route-master in the quarry caravan network has been leaking old evacuation maps to raiders, though Barrel does not yet know who.
