Finaia Olem
Finaia Olem
At the table
Voice
Clear and lightly roughened, with the breath control of someone accustomed to calling over water and wind. Her pace speeds up while working, then slows when she is trying to decide whether a person is telling the truth.
Her voice has a clear, lightly rasped edge, shaped by calling directions over river noise and cold wind. She places words carefully when giving instructions, as if each one must survive a long journey. In casual company she speaks quickly and warmly; when suspicious, she becomes blunt and precise rather than lowering her voice.
Speech patterns
How to play them
She offers small, concrete help before asking for trust. If the party treats ordinary workers fairly, she warms quickly and shares local routes. If they pressure her about her father or demand that she deliver sealed information, she turns the conversation back to what they need and watches how they react.
Goal
Find out what happened on her father's final winter ferry crossing, and learn whether the route records destroyed in the Good Fortune House fire were connected to it.
Motivation
She wants truth, but even more than that she wants to know that her father's disappearance was not the result of a choice she could have prevented.
Appearance
A young woman with a heart-shaped face, warm ivory skin burnished gold at the shoulders, and large dark hazel eyes flecked with amber. Her jaw-length black hair falls in uneven, wind-tossed layers, interrupted by one pale copper lock that keeps slipping across her brow. She moves lightly but never aimlessly, with one shoulder often angled toward the nearest exit. Her hands are callused at the palms from rope and parcel work. When she laughs, her slightly prominent front teeth show; when eating, she bites cleanly through even tough bread rather than tearing it apart. She has a habit of occupying the edge of a conversation, leaving others the center without seeming to shrink herself. In the requested portrait, she is unclothed in a nonsexual figure-study presentation, without visible weapons, tools, or accessories.
Clothing
For ordinary work, she wears a charcoal traveling coat over a cream shirt, a wine-colored waist sash, slate trousers, and soft-soled boots. The garments are carefully mended, practical, and free of showy trim. The portrait reference itself shows her unclothed, with no accessories or equipment visible.
Body language
She keeps her weight on the balls of her feet and leaves a little more room around herself than most people do. In a crowd she takes up almost no space, but at a table she spreads maps and elbows wide without noticing. Her fingertips find the hollow beneath her throat when she is weighing a lie. She faces people squarely when she has decided to trust them, but keeps one shoulder turned toward an exit when she has not.

AC 14 · HP 9 · 30 feetFinaia avoids a fair fight. She uses cover, distance, and deception, aiming for a distracted enemy when an ally engages them. Background
Finaia Olem grew up carrying packages between ferry landings and hillside farms in the rain-bitten district of Kest 4, a place whose old survey name survives on every tax notice. Her mother, Deka, repaired nets and taught her to read people by the way they held a bargain. Her father, Gant, was a ferry pilot who disappeared during a winter crossing when Finaia was twelve. For years she accepted the official story that his boat had gone down. At seventeen, she took work as a runner for the boastfully named Good Fortune House, now a half-collapsed waystation where travelers are routinely robbed. A fire there trapped her and a dozen guests behind a jammed door. Finaia broke a service hatch with a stone, got everyone out, and found that the fire had been set to destroy a packet of route records. Since then, she has distrusted convenient explanations and feels responsible for anyone who cannot find their own exit. Now she carries messages between villages while quietly tracing the route her father took. Her closest confidant is Tavi, a blunt-tongued ferry mechanic who wants her to stop turning every errand into an investigation. Her employer, Koro, pays reliably but has begun demanding that she deliver sealed letters without asking what they contain.
Role in the story
A low-level ally and local guide whose delivery work can bring the party into contact with hidden disputes over travel routes, missing records, and the people who control passage through the district.
“Her mother, Deka, repaired nets and taught her to read people by the way they held a bargain.”
- Faction
- Works irregularly for Koro's message-brokering business, the Nine Mile Service, named for a military map distance that no longer matches the road. She has no loyalty to the organization beyond its wages.
