At the table

“necessary correction”
From how they speak

Voice

A dry rasp with a clear, court-trained ring; his audible intake of breath often arrives before his answer.

His voice carries a dry, papery rasp beneath a clear, resonant delivery, as if each word has passed through a narrow stone passage. Years of presiding over crowded hearings have taught him to project without shouting. He begins answers after a distinctive tooth-drawn intake of breath; when he is angry, the pace of his speech becomes clipped and his consonants strike hard.

Speech patterns

Frames opinions as rulings: "The question before us is not whether it is pleasant, but whether it preserves order."
Uses measured pauses and formal address, especially when speaking to people he considers socially inferior.
When Hananiah is present, his sentences become less polished and more personal.
Calls a threat a "necessary correction" and a concession a "temporary allowance."

How to play them

Offer a formal hearing and let the other party speak long enough to reveal what they value. He responds best to evidence, precedent, and appeals to civic stability. He distrusts moral accusation but may be shaken by specific testimony from people harmed by his policies. Treating Hananiah as a political instrument makes him defensive; showing concern for Hananiah's safety can make him unexpectedly candid.

Goal

Keep the Drairesse realm intact while ensuring Hananiah inherits a court powerful enough to survive its enemies.

Motivation

He wants to preserve the divine order he was raised to serve, and to believe that his sacrifices have protected more lives than they have harmed.

Appearance

Arannis is a towering Drairesse whose sapphire-blue crystal scales overlap like tiny panes of cathedral glass, their edges clouded with pale cyan light. The aura gathers brightest at his joints and along the ridges of his brow, pulsing faintly when he listens. He moves with a slow, exacting glide, setting each claw down as if marking a boundary. His head is crowned with backward-sweeping crystalline crests, polished smooth where generations of ceremonial oils have touched them. The unexpected detail is that he keeps a tiny, lopsided clay bird tucked into his formal collar, crude and plainly made by a child. People notice his silence first: before answering, he draws one dry breath through his teeth, a sound like a file passing over glass.

Clothing

Layered ivory-and-deep-blue vestments fastened with translucent clasps, a mantle embroidered with the branching sunburst of his office, and a stiff collar concealing the clay bird. The fabric is heavy enough to whisper against his scales when he turns.

Body language

He stands unnervingly still, shoulders squared, with his staff planted exactly beside his right foot. His head inclines a few degrees when someone surprises him. Rather than pacing when angry, he becomes more motionless, and the cyan glow at his joints sharpens.

Distinguishing features

Pale cyan light slowly travels beneath his sapphire crystal scales.
A dry, glass-file intake of breath precedes most answers.
A tiny, lopsided clay bird is hidden in his ceremonial collar.
His footsteps are quiet but precisely spaced, as though he is measuring the room.

Personality

13 traits and drives

Arannis can be patient enough to hear a petitioner repeat the same plea three times, yet he is not naturally compassionate: he listens to understand the shape of a problem, then may disregard the person suffering from it. He is warm and even playful with Hananiah in private, but rigidly ceremonial when watched. He admires courage while resenting defiance, and his rare moments of doubt make him more severe rather than more gentle.

Alignment
Lawful authoritarian; he sincerely believes hierarchy is sacred and that order excuses cruelty.

Quirks

Counts the beats of silence after a question before answering.
Tilts his head toward the nearest window at noon, though the light in Aelithar never changes.
Straightens objects on a table until their edges align with the room.
Taps his staff twice when someone uses a title incorrectly.
Touches the hidden clay bird whenever Hananiah leaves the room.

Habits

Turns every dispute into a formal hearing, even when those involved only want a private answer.
Studies a speaker's hands while they talk, then looks directly into their eyes when he has reached a decision.
When genuinely troubled, he rubs one thumb over the clay bird hidden at his collar.
In private with Hananiah, he sometimes abandons titles and speaks with surprising warmth; in court, he treats affection as a breach of discipline.

Traits · 4

Patient with procedure, impatient with what he considers disorder.
Protective toward Hananiah, yet willing to pressure them in the name of duty.
A capable listener whose empathy stops short when it challenges his doctrine.
Privately sentimental about small keepsakes, publicly dismissive of sentiment.

Flaws · 3

Confuses obedience with consent and stability with justice.
Can rationalize nearly any cruelty if it is presented as necessary to preserve order.
His pride makes him slow to admit uncertainty, even when delay costs lives.

Fears · 3

That Hananiah will reject him not only as a father but as a moral example.
That the Salt Stair testimony will prove his piety was used to sanctify a preventable atrocity.
That loosening Drairesse rule will bring violence he cannot control.

Wants and needs · 3

Wants Hananiah to remain close without questioning the foundations of his rule.
Needs the Salt Stair survivors' testimony contained before it reaches the court.
Needs a way to preserve public order without repeating the choices that made him complicit in the blockade.

Combat

HP 112 · 30 feet per round

Arannis avoids being surrounded and uses his staff to keep opponents at reach. He opens with Kneel Before the Mandate against advancing foes, then uses Censure Ray to punish a dangerous or exposed target. He saves Sapphire Ward for a heavy blow and uses Edict of the Firmament to interrupt a key enemy action. If the fight turns against him, he withdraws toward guards or a defensible doorway rather than risking capture.

Background

Born to House Gyrvyrrel's Subhouse Icereth, Arannis was raised inside Castle Vareth-Om, in Aelithar's unending daylight. Tutors taught him that Drairesse sovereignty was not merely political but a divine obligation, and that other peoples were safest when obedient. He excelled at listening to disputes, then learned to mistake a well-ordered verdict for a just one. Centuries ago, during the Salt Stair uprising, he authorized a blockade that trapped a district's inhabitants without food. His own aide carried a child through a drainage culvert to safety; the child's handmade clay bird was left in Arannis's chamber afterward. He kept it, though he never admitted why. He is Hananiah's father. Their relationship is affectionate in private and brittle in public: Arannis wants his child to inherit a stable realm, while Hananiah questions the doctrine that made the realm stable. Now rival houses press him to endorse harsher restrictions on non-Drairesse residents, and the old blockade's survivors are gathering testimony that could undermine his authority.
