Aurelion Varethis
Aurelion Varethis
At the table
Voice
A dry, resonant rasp with a faint crackle at the edges, shaped by a long habit of speaking over observatory instruments, heated stone, and crowded court chambers. His breath sometimes clicks softly against the back of his throat. The name Aurelion Varethis is pronounced with deliberate, separated syllables.
He speaks in clipped, carefully ordered clauses, with the habit of an administrator who has learned to make a sentence survive quotation. Astronomy supplies his metaphors; court procedure supplies his verbs. Under stress his consonants become harder and his breath carries a faint dry rasp, like air crossing hot stone. He does not become softer when angry: he becomes faster, more specific, and more willing to name the consequence.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Offer a useful appointment, accurate intelligence, or a carefully limited favor before demanding anything. Aurelion tests visitors by letting them speak uninterrupted, then asks what they omitted. He can be genuinely attentive to practical problems, especially those involving navigation or logistics, but treats any challenge to the Mandates as a negotiation over leverage. Proof of the labor routes unsettles him more than moral denunciation; a credible plan to protect the people affected can make him pause.
Goal
Keep the Draconic Mandates dominant and Xhal'Dra secure, while quietly gaining enough control over the labor routes to decide who can be freed without triggering a revolt or a purge.
Motivation
Aurelion wants a realm that cannot be taken from his family by famine, rival powers, or popular revolt. He believes centralized control prevents chaos, even as his own choices help create the suffering that could bring that chaos.
Appearance
Aurelion's black-gold scales have the layered sheen of old coin lacquered with soot: near-black in shadow, then suddenly lit with thin, molten seams when he turns. A faint ember aura shivers around his shoulders and horns, stirring dust without warming the room. He carries his weight high on the balls of his feet, almost never settling his heels, as if the floor were a map he might need to leave at speed. His broad jaw ends in a squared, beaklike muzzle; when he eats, he cuts each morsel into exact portions with his teeth, and when amused he shows a row of blunt, pale-gold grinding teeth instead of a courtly smile. Unexpectedly, he keeps a pocket garden of tiny mosses and lichens alive in the warm cracks of his observatory's stonework, tending them with the same patient attention he gives star charts.
Clothing
A fitted court mantle of charcoal silk, gold-threaded with orbital paths; a high collar leaves his throat free, and a broad belt carries a star-caliper, sealed dispatch tubes, and a small heatproof case. His formal cuffs conceal fine scales rather than human skin.
Body language
He waits balanced on the balls of his feet, tail held close to keep it from betraying irritation. His head stays still while his eyes track every speaker. When cornered by a moral accusation, he presses his jaw shut until the scales along it lift, then resumes arranging nearby objects into straight lines.

Distinguishing features
Personality
15 traits and drivesAurelion is patient with puzzles and impatient with people who mistake sincerity for competence. In private, he can be dryly funny and unexpectedly protective of small, living things. In court, he is polished and watchful, willing to let a person believe they have won a point if that belief keeps them useful. When someone is harmed by a policy he arranged, his composure turns brittle rather than openly remorseful. He wants to be seen as a guardian of order, yet resents anyone who asks what his order costs.
- Alignment
- Lawful and ruthless; he values order chiefly as a means of preserving his family's power.

HP 210 · 30 feet per round on foot; 30 feet per round flying while unencumbered (custom Drairesse feature).Aurelion avoids a fair duel. He begins at range, uses Cinderline to make an approach costly, and places Falling Star Edict where opponents must choose between scattering and abandoning an ally or objective. He uses flight and his tail to control space, focusing attacks on whoever directs the opposition. If Xhal'Dra or a family member is threatened, he spends his strongest ability immediately. If captured, he bargains with schedules, names, and access rather than pretending to be fearless.

Background
Born into the ruling family of Aelithar, Aurelion was trained to read both the night sky and the less visible constellations of obligation: who owed whom, which decree could be delayed, and whose public loyalty concealed a private grievance. He became his brother Xhal'Dra's scheduler and celestial strategist, first by anticipating court crises, then by quietly arranging which crises reached the emperor at all. Years ago, during a succession-era famine, Aurelion authorized the transfer of bonded laborers to keep the palace granaries and military roads operating. He watched a child disappear into that machinery and learned that efficient policy could be monstrous without ever raising its voice. Instead of ending the practice, he made it harder to see and easier to administer. Now he helps run slavery rings and manipulates Xhal'Dra's calendar, audiences, and military briefings to strengthen the Draconic Mandates' grip over Aelithar. He lives in Perma Day at the Castle of Vareth-Om among his brother, their family, and the advisors who compete to shape the empire. His closest ongoing conflict is with Xhal'Dra: Aurelion believes he protects his brother from bad counsel, while Xhal'Dra has begun to notice how often the prince's schedule prevents inconvenient people from being heard. Aurelion also exchanges sealed messages with a former observatory assistant who wants him to dismantle the labor routes he helped build. He has not answered the latest letter.
