At the table

Voice

His voice has a dry rasp at the edges, like rope dragged over a cleat, and carries well across a noisy deck. The rhythm is quick and practical, with brief pauses before he commits to an answer. When he calls from the rigging, the sound has a bright, piercing edge that cuts through wind.

He speaks in compact, workmanlike sentences, with shipboard terms slipping into ordinary talk. He clips the ends of words when busy and gives instructions in a sharp, carrying call shaped by years of shouting over wind and creaking canvas. Before answering something personal, he takes a small nose-breath and clicks his tongue once.

Speech patterns

Uses rigging and weather as metaphors: 'That promise won't hold in a crosswind.'
Calls unfamiliar passengers 'shoreward' until they have proved themselves.
Asks practical questions before personal ones, especially about baggage, debts, and where someone intends to go.
When speaking to Sella, uses her name rather than her title, except in front of outsiders.

How to play them

Werrik is guarded and openly skeptical with the player characters, testing whether they respect the crew's work and boundaries. He offers useful information once they help with a real shipboard task, but watches closely for signs they intend to take safe passage and disappear. Honest concern for the missing survivors or for Sella earns more trust than flattery. He will confront the party directly if he believes they are endangering the ship.

Goal

Find the survivors still missing from the reef where Orm abandoned them, while keeping Sella's ship seaworthy and its crew together.

Motivation

Werrik wants to repay the rescue that gave him a life beyond the reef, but he is terrified that loyalty will once again be mistaken for permission to sacrifice him.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Werrik is a compact halfling with a weather-browned face, wind-chapped lips, and the dense, sure-footed stance of someone who has spent his life balancing on wet planks. His dark, tightly curled hair is clipped short at the sides and gathered into a stubborn little knot at the nape, threaded with tarred cord. His clothes smell faintly of salt, hemp, and hot pitch. He moves in quick, measured sidesteps, keeping one hand near a rope or rail as if the ship might suddenly tilt. An unexpected sight on a hard-used rigger: a tiny brass wind-up bird, polished smooth from handling, is always tucked in his breast pocket.

Clothing

A patched blue-gray sailor's coat cut short to clear the rigging, a faded red waist sash, salt-stiff trousers, soft-soled deck shoes, and a leather harness hung with carabiner-like iron clips and line knives.

Body language

He plants his feet wide for balance even on dry ground, hooks a thumb through a belt loop, and watches people through quick side glances. When someone earns his trust, he stops checking the nearest rope and faces them squarely.

Distinguishing features

A small brass wind-up bird is tucked into his breast pocket; its left wing is rubbed nearly bare from his thumb.
Before answering a difficult question, he draws in a short breath through his nose and clicks his tongue once, as if testing the wind.
His callused palms are stained with dark blue sailmaker's chalk, which gathers in the creases of his hands.

Personality

12 traits and drives

Werrik is brisk and unsentimental about danger, yet tender toward broken tools and small creatures. He distrusts passengers who speak grandly about loyalty, but will risk himself to pull a stranger from a fall. When the ship is working well, he jokes and shares food; when supplies run low or the weather turns, he becomes suspicious, counting every rope and promise.

Alignment
Neutral good

Quirks

Names individual ropes after the jobs they do, then apologizes to them when forced to cut one.
Taps a mast twice before climbing it, even when he has climbed it many times that day.
Keeps scraps of sailcloth folded into tiny bird shapes and leaves them in unexpected places.
Counts steps between deck fittings under his breath when he is thinking.
Turns his wind-up bird's key exactly one half-turn when worried, though he knows it cannot fly.

Habits

Checks knots and lashings when anxious, even in the middle of a conversation.
Keeps an eye on passengers' hands whenever they ask about the ship's route or stores.
After a hard day, winds scraps of sailcloth into tiny birds and leaves them near the galley.
When Sella gives an order, he moves at once; afterward he may grumble about it where she can hear.

Traits · 3

He is practical to the point of bluntness, but quietly sentimental about the objects and people who keep him afloat.
He distrusts easy promises, yet once someone proves dependable he will defend them without hesitation.
He needles authority in ordinary moments, but obeys Captain Sella immediately when lives are at stake.

Flaws · 3

Assumes strangers are planning to use the ship and abandon its crew once they reach safety.
His fierce loyalty to Sella can make him disregard sensible orders from anyone else.
Holds onto grievances long after an apology, especially when the offender had power over him.

Fears · 3

Being left behind again when the ship must make a hard choice.
That Captain Sella will eventually learn the full truth and decide his attachment is a danger to the crew.
A calm sea with no wind, because it leaves a ship helpless and gives old memories too much room.

Wants and needs · 3

Wants the missing reef survivors found before the next storm season.
Needs Captain Sella to trust him with the truth about Orm's log.
Wants the player characters to prove they see the crew as people, not merely a passage to safety.

Combat

AC 15 · HP 52 · 25 ft.

Werrik uses cover, elevation, and ship fittings rather than standing toe-to-toe. He opens with Hunter's Mark against a dangerous opponent, fires from rigging or behind a mast, and shifts position after attacking. If an ally is threatened, he uses his reaction to foul an attack with a line or interpose himself. He prefers to disable intruders or drive them off; he fights to kill only if the crew or captain is in immediate danger.

Possessions

The brass wind-up bird made by his late mother
A fragment of Orm's captain's log wrapped in sailcloth
A bundle of old tide charts marked with suspected survivor locations
A small pouch of rigging hooks and sailmaker's chalk

Background

Werrik was born aboard a coastal trader and learned the shape of the world from rigging, tide tables, and the underside of decks. He never knew a settled home. His first mentor, an old rigger named Dain, taught him to splice line before he could read. Years later, when a squall shattered the mast of the ship he served on, the former captain ordered the crew to cut free a trapped deckhand and save the cargo instead. Werrik disobeyed, survived the wreck, and watched that captain leave him and several others on a reef to lighten the ship. The current captain, Sella, found them while searching for survivors and hauled Werrik aboard despite her own crew's protests. He is fiercely loyal to her, but regards new passengers as future liabilities. He has not told Sella that he kept a fragment of the old captain's log, which proves the man deliberately abandoned the survivors. He is trying to find the missing crew still stranded somewhere along the reefs, while also keeping the ship's rigging repaired with dwindling stores.

Role in the story

A wary shipboard ally and skilled scout whose loyalty to the captain can bring the party a valuable friend or a stubborn obstacle. His fear of being abandoned echoes the party's own tests of trust, while his hidden log fragment can expose the previous captain's betrayal and launch a rescue or reckoning.

“His first mentor, an old rigger named Dain, taught him to splice line before he could read.”

Tamsin, a cook aboard ship, quietly repairs the little brass bird whenever its mechanism jams.
The former captain, Orm, abandoned Werrik and other survivors on a reef and may still be sailing under a different flag.
