Rovan Ruzan
Rovan Ruzan
At the table
“and a safe route a”
Voice
His voice has the rasp of someone accustomed to calling over surf and wind, with a dry catch at the back of the throat from too much lamp smoke and bitter tea. The rhythm is measured like a roll call, but a name he cares about can break that steady pace.
He speaks in clipped, workmanlike phrases, often arranging events in sequence before giving an opinion. Harbor vocabulary slips into ordinary conversation. When he is frightened, his sentences grow more exact and the consonants strike harder.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Rovan is guarded with strangers until they show that they can listen to refugees without turning their grief into a spectacle. He offers useful information in exchange for precise accounts, supplies, or a promise to bring back news. A sincere question about Toma unsettles him, but he answers plainly.
Goal
Find a reliable route into Duskmere Hollow and learn whether Toma or Corwin Ashvale left any trace before the black tide closed over the village.
Motivation
Rovan wants to replace guesswork with evidence, but beneath that practical purpose is a desperate hope that a correct count might still lead him to his brother.
Appearance
Rovan is a broad, weather-worn human with salt-dried skin, a heavy brow, and a neatly trimmed beard gone iron-gray at the chin. He walks with a slight forward pitch, as though leaning into a wind that no longer blows, and taps his left boot twice before crossing any threshold. His patched coat hangs too long in the sleeves, but its brass buttons are polished bright enough to catch the lantern glow. He smells of wet rope, lamp oil, and bitter tea; his hands are stained with ink and tar.
Clothing
A faded navy coat with mismatched sleeve patches, a wool scarf stiffened by old salt, and a leather belt crowded with chalk, twine, and a brass tally counter. One cuff is repeatedly mended with careful, tiny stitches.
Body language
His shoulders sag when he thinks nobody is watching, but he straightens sharply when someone needs direction. He keeps his left hand on the folded harbor chart at his belt and taps his boot twice before stepping through a doorway or boarding a boat.

Background
Rovan Ruzan spent twenty years counting vessels through the harbors and ferry landings around Sallowmere Marsh. He counted every arriving ship twice, first by sail and then by its sound against the pilings. He called it diligence until the night a storm crowded the harbor and he missed a small skiff slipping out under the quay. His younger brother, Toma, was aboard, trying to reach Duskmere Hollow before the black tide swallowed the village. Rovan never saw him again. Since Duskmere's ruin, Rovan has helped keep order among the refugees camped along Thistlewick Road, where he records who arrives, who leaves, and what supplies have gone missing. He is exhausted, sleeps in brief stretches, and argues with anyone who treats the refugees as a temporary inconvenience. He has quietly begun comparing old harbor tallies with reports of the drowned bell tower, hoping to find a trace of his brother or Corwin Ashvale.
Role in the story
A capable, worn-down guide and witness who can connect the refugees' accounts to the old harbor records. His missing brother and falsified tally give him a personal stake in investigating the black tide, while his habits make him a useful source of order in a desperate camp.
“He counted every arriving ship twice, first by sail and then by its sound against the pilings.”
- Faction
- Former harbor master of the small ports around Sallowmere Marsh; currently an unofficial organizer among the Duskmere refugees on Thistlewick Road.
