Yuzsár
Yuzsár
At the table
Voice
His voice has a dry, slightly rasping edge from kiln smoke and years of shouting over tools. The consonants land firmly, as if each word were set into mortar; he does not raise his voice much, but his warnings carry because he wastes no breath.
He speaks in short, sturdy clauses, shaped by years of calling warnings across noisy work yards and giving orders on the road. He favors concrete nouns and measures: load, brace, distance, time. When he is relaxed, he explains things with patient care; under pressure, his sentences become clipped but never theatrical.
Speech patterns
How to play them
He is wary of grand promises but responsive to specific plans and honest admissions of risk. He will help travelers who show concern for bystanders. If pressed to approve the dangerous crossing, he asks the speaker to walk it first with him and listen to the supports.
Goal
Prevent the unsafe crossing from being certified until it is repaired, then find a way to keep the market route open for people who depend on it.
Motivation
He believes that strength is only worth having when it buys other people time to escape danger.
Appearance
Yuzsár looks as if the road itself has been sanding him down for years. His brass-colored scales are dulled by fine dust, with pale grit lodged between the ridges at his jaw and knuckles. He moves with a measured, heel-first tread, keeping his shield close and his head angled as though listening for a roof beam to complain. A small iron kettle hangs from his belt, blackened all over except for one bright, thumb-polished crescent on its handle. People tend to remember the kettle before they remember his armor.
Clothing
A serviceable chain shirt beneath a patched, sand-colored travel coat. His coat's cuffs are dark with old soot, and a strip of woven blue cloth ties his kettle to his belt.
Body language
He plants his feet as if expecting the floor to shift, and habitually angles his shield toward the nearest vulnerable person. When uncertain, he rubs the bright crescent on his kettle handle with one claw. When angry, his tail goes rigid and his jaw plates flare, but his hands become more deliberate rather than more restless.

Personality
12 traits and drivesYuzsár is protective without being soft-spoken about danger, and distrustful of authority without taking pleasure in defiance. In a crisis he is direct, decisive, and surprisingly good at making frightened strangers cooperate. In safe company he is patient and almost domestic, fussing over a kettle or a loose buckle. When he feels personally challenged, he can mistake stubbornness for principle and will hold his ground long after a wiser person would change tactics.

Background
Yuzsár grew up among the kiln yards of Sárk, where his family fired roof tiles and repaired the brick channels that carried hot air through the workshops. He enlisted as a caravan guard after a kiln collapse left his family in debt. During his first winter on the road, a bridge gave way beneath a refugee cart. His captain ordered the guards to save the cargo; Yuzsár disobeyed, braced the cart with his shield, and helped pull the passengers free. The captain dismissed him, but one rescued child, now a grown roadwright named Olek, has remained his friend and occasional source of work. Yuzsár later learned soldiering from a patient veteran, Branka, who taught him that a formation is a promise made with your neighbors. Now he escorts travelers and checks failing bridges for a modest fee. His present trouble is that a local magistrate wants him to certify an unsafe crossing before a market caravan arrives. He refuses to sign, but the delay will strand people who cannot afford another route.
Role in the story
A capable ally, stubborn witness, or obstacle to anyone trying to rush a caravan across a dangerous crossing. His insistence on evidence can lead the party toward a buried official crime, while his refusal to bend can complicate efforts to help people stranded by the closure.
“He enlisted as a caravan guard after a kiln collapse left his family in debt.”
- Faction
- No formal faction. He sometimes works for the roadwrights and caravan guards around Sárk, but will not accept a contract that requires him to abandon endangered travelers.
