Wulger Marshstep
Wulger Marshstep

Voice
Wulger's voice has a dry, breath-forward rasp from years of calling across wet open ground. It carries clearly without sounding grand, and he punches important directions with the same firm rhythm he uses to set a pace on patrol.
His words come out clipped and well placed, shaped by years of calling directions over wind and water. He tends to name a person, a place, and an action rather than explain his feelings. His anger brings a hard edge to consonants and makes him speak faster, not softer. When relaxed, he develops a dry, understated humor and leaves a little space after a joke to see who catches it.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Approach him with a concrete problem, a clear account of what you observed, and a willingness to share responsibility. He respects competent action and honest uncertainty. If challenged, ask what safeguards would make the old custom workable rather than accusing him of abandoning it. He is more receptive after a successful joint task than after a long argument.
Goal
Find what is killing livestock and settle the danger without making the new hunting customs a permanent wedge between generations.
Motivation
Wulger wants people to survive danger because they can coordinate, not because one fortunate hunter happens to be nearby. He also wants his family to see that his discipline came from love for the community, not contempt for its past.
Appearance
Tall and long-limbed, Wulger moves with a hunter's measured economy, placing each foot as if testing ground that no one else can see. His white-green scales have the faint, pebbled sheen of wet river stones, paling at the jaw and deepening to reed-green along his temples. Blond hair, sun-bleached at the tips, is tied back with a strip of old sailcloth. He wears his hunting coat slightly too large, its elbows patched in mismatched squares and its hem weighted with tiny river shells that click when he stops. He checks the coat's three bone toggles whenever a conversation turns tense. The unexpected detail is a small, carefully folded paper kite tucked into his belt, kept in excellent repair despite the mud and blood of his work.
Clothing
An oversized reed-brown hunting coat patched at the elbows with mismatched cloth, a close-wrapped scarf, weather-dark trousers, and soft boots with woven grips. Three bone toggles are polished from constant checking. A folded paper kite rides in his belt beside practical hunting tools.
Body language
He stands slightly angled toward the nearest exit or open ground, shoulders loose until challenged. His hands check the coat toggles, then hover near his spear when voices rise. When genuinely pleased, he leans forward and listens with his whole face; when ashamed, he busies himself cleaning mud from gear that is already clean.

Personality
12 traits and drivesWulger is protective but not gentle by default: he notices who is hungry, injured, or left out, then may bark orders at them as if care were a task to complete. He is proud of his tactical instincts and quick to take responsibility, yet privately doubts whether his rules have cost the settlement something that cannot be measured in safer patrols. At ease, he is dryly funny and generous with practical help. Under pressure, the same decisiveness becomes impatience, and a challenge to his judgment can bring his temper up before his good sense catches it.
- Alignment
- Neutral, inclined toward protecting the settlement even when his methods offend its traditions

AC 13 · HP 11 · 30 ft.Wulger prefers to spot danger before it reaches the settlement. In a fight, he uses cover, range, and short signals to keep allies from bunching together. He throws his spear to interrupt a pursuer, then closes only when an ally can support him. His temper can make him overcommit if an enemy threatens someone under his protection.

Background
Wulger was raised among a Lightfoot-descended Greenwake family that hunted by shared custom: each household took a turn, the catch was divided openly, and no one claimed a trail as private ground. As a child he was remembered as sweet, patient, and eager to carry baskets for elders. That changed during the lean flood-year when a boar-beast broke into the reed pens and killed two people before the hunters could agree whose turn it was to act. Wulger, still young, spotted its return trail and organized a quiet ambush with whoever would follow him. They brought the beast down, but his aunt Teka was badly hurt in the confusion. Wulger took from the day a conviction that hesitation can cost lives; his relatives remember that it was also his impatience that scattered the group. He later helped establish new hunting customs: marked patrol routes, paired scouts, agreed signals, and explicit authority to act when danger is immediate. The settlement became safer, but the rules made the hunt feel like assigned work to elders who once treated it as a communal rite. His mother, Dema, still shares meals with him but refuses to join his patrols. His closest ally is Kett, a practical young tracker who helped draft the rules and now worries that Wulger treats every disagreement like a threat. Wulger is currently trying to stop a series of unexplained livestock killings without turning the hunt into a public contest between old and new customs.
Role in the story
A capable local ally and an embodiment of the settlement's argument over safety, authority, and shared tradition. Wulger can guide the party through the marsh and organize a hunt, but his certainty may complicate negotiations with relatives who still favor communal custom.
