At the table

“That is the cheap version of what happens next.”
From how they speak

Voice

A dry baritone with a gravelly edge, like stone dragged across iron. He rarely raises his volume, which makes his rare shouted commands startlingly sharp.

Low and clipped, with hard consonants and a faint Levantine cadence. He speaks as though every sentence has been tested for structural weakness. His voice softens noticeably when discussing children, old songs, or Sava.

Speech patterns

Uses short, practical sentences during negotiations.
Calls strangers 'friend' when he wants them to lower their guard.
Refers to love as 'a condition of the heart' rather than naming it.
Swears in Dwarvish when frightened, not angry.
Frequently ends warnings with, 'That is the cheap version of what happens next.'

How to play them

Draz presents himself as a blunt professional who can be bought, but he quietly tests whether visitors protect the weak when no reward is offered. He respects competence, despises theatrical cruelty, and becomes unexpectedly helpful toward anyone who speaks of love without treating it as weakness. He may hire the party to interfere with Sava's plans while pretending the job is unrelated.

Goal

Break Sava Nahr's blood contract before the next blood moon without killing the warlock, if any other path remains

Motivation

To prove that loving a wicked person does not require becoming wicked in the same way

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Draz is a compact, broad-shouldered dwarf with the dense, work-hardened build of someone who has spent as much time hauling equipment as fighting. He moves with an odd forward tilt, always balanced as though standing on the deck of a ship, and when he waits he rests his weight on the balls of his feet instead of his heels. His beard is clipped square at the jaw and bound into three short cords with brass ammunition caps. His hands are blackened at the nails from powder, but his cuffs are obsessively clean. He smells faintly of pine resin, lamp oil, and expensive rosewater, an unexpectedly delicate note for a hired killer. His most noticeable habit is checking the small brass locket beneath his collar every few minutes without seeming aware of it.

Clothing

A weather-darkened green coat over boiled leather armor, reinforced with overlapping iron plates at the ribs. His belt carries powder horns, copper tools, a whetstone, and a red silk scarf that is far too fine for the rest of his gear.

Body language

Draz stands slightly crouched with his shoulders angled toward the nearest escape route. He taps his thumb against his locket when anxious, rotates his hand cannon's cylinder when angry, and becomes unnaturally still when Sava's name is mentioned.

His left boot has a soft felt sole for quiet movement, while his right boot has a metal heel that gives his stride a faint irregular click.
His beard smells faintly of rosewater despite the gun oil and mountain dust on the rest of him.
He never turns his back fully toward an open doorway, even while eating.

Personality

18 traits and drives

Draz is practical, observant, and almost painfully dependable with strangers, yet evasive and manipulative with the people closest to him. He gives honest advice to clients while concealing the most important truth about his own motives. In danger he becomes calm, precise, and protective. When Sava is threatened, that composure fractures into fierce impulsiveness. In private, Draz is sentimental enough to preserve wilted flowers, but he would rather fight three ogres than admit why.

Alignment
Neutral with fiercely loyal impulses

Quirks

He counts his ammunition under his breath whenever someone lies to him.
He puts salt in sweet tea and sugar in bitter coffee, claiming both mistakes improve the drink.
He apologizes to his firearm before firing it.
He sleeps sitting upright with one hand around the locket chain.
He leaves a single coin beneath the tongue of anyone he kills, even enemies he claims to hate.

Habits

He studies exits, windows, and high ground before acknowledging anyone in a room.
He accepts dangerous jobs without haggling, then spends excessive time negotiating the safety of bystanders.
He becomes formal and almost tender when discussing Sava, but crude and dismissive when discussing his own feelings.
After violence, he cleans his firearm before checking his own injuries.
He keeps promises made in private even when doing so ruins a profitable contract.

Traits · 5

Measures every promise as if it were ammunition
Protective of strangers who remind him of his younger self
Suspicious of easy goodness and fascinated by complicated evil
Embarrassed by tenderness but incapable of abandoning it
Quietly proud of his ability to make broken equipment work again

Flaws · 5

Confuses loyalty with moral virtue
Will lie smoothly to protect Sava, then punish himself for the lie
Becomes reckless when someone mocks or threatens the warlock
Keeps emotional score with the people he loves
Cannot walk away from a contract once he has given his word, even when the employer betrays him

Fears · 4

That Sava's affection is entirely calculated
That his sister will learn how he earns his money
Being forced to choose between saving innocent lives and saving Sava
Dying without discovering whether his love changed the warlock at all

Wants and needs · 4

He wants Sava to choose redemption freely rather than be forced into it.
He needs to accept that love cannot excuse deliberate cruelty.
He wants his sister to believe he is more than the violence he performs.
He needs to stop treating sacrifice as the only proof that his feelings are real.

Combat

AC 16 · HP 31 · 25 feet

Draz begins at range, marks the most dangerous enemy, and uses terrain to stay above or behind his targets. He fires the hand cannon once, retreats while reloading, and switches to his longbow when sustained pressure is needed. He saves his warhammer for cramped spaces or enemies who close on him. If an ally is threatened, he abandons a tactically perfect position without hesitation. Against fiends, he becomes methodical and merciless.

Background

Draz was born in the quarry settlement of Kadar Vask, where his family cut fortress stone for a duke who never paid them on time. At nineteen, he joined a caravan guard company and learned to track smugglers through high passes. During a winter escort, the caravan was attacked by a fiend-bound warlock named Sava Nahr. Sava killed nearly everyone present, but spared Draz after he refused to abandon a trapped child beneath an overturned wagon. Instead of finishing him, Sava offered him work. Draz accepted, first for money, then for the private hope that proximity would reveal what remained human in the warlock. Years later, that hope has become a love he considers both shameful and sacred. Draz now takes contracts under Sava's seal, while secretly sabotaging assignments that would harm innocents. His current problem is that Sava has promised a powerful patron the soul of an entire mountain village, and Draz has discovered the contract can only be broken if someone willingly kills Sava before the next blood moon.

Role in the story

A morally compromised ally who offers the party work against bandits, fiends, and rival mercenaries while concealing his connection to the campaign's principal warlock. He can become a tragic antagonist, a source of insider intelligence, or an ally who finally chooses innocent lives over the person he loves.
