“I do not know yet,”
From how they speak

Voice

His voice is a young man's, lower and fuller than he expects, with a slight rasp that becomes more noticeable after a long day outdoors. The local accent sounds natural to everyone around him, though he remembers having spoken differently before. When calm, his words have the measured cadence of someone asking a patient to stay with him. When rattled, breath catches high in his chest and the next few words come out clipped, with no change to his underlying courtesy.

Eadric speaks in fluent local Wessex English, though the words feel newly acquired to his mind. He chooses concrete terms and asks careful questions, often leaving a pause after an answer to see whether the speaker will add more. Under strain, his modern habits surface in clipped assessment phrases and a breath that catches audibly before he regains control.

Speech patterns

Begins difficult conversations with a concrete question about what happened, not with a claim about what it means.
Uses short, calm instructions when someone is injured: 'Look at me. Keep your hand there. Breathe once, then tell me where it hurts.'
Avoids speaking of his former life unless he trusts someone deeply, and describes it at first as a dream or fever memory.
When pressed for certainty, says, 'I do not know yet,' even when others want a confident answer.

How to play them

Treat Eadric as a capable, cautious person rather than a puzzle to be solved. He responds well to practical help, honesty, and questions that leave him room to refuse. If players show respect for the Circle's safety, he may share clues about displaced outsiders; if they press him to explain his body or former life in public, he shuts down and redirects the conversation.

Goal

Find a safe way to investigate why he and the other Circle members arrived in Wessex without exposing them to local authorities or letting the fellowship turn on itself.

Motivation

To keep people alive, make sense of the transformation without surrendering his memories, and protect the Circle from panic and exploitation.

Appearance

At first glance Eadric looks like a handsome young West Saxon laborer, but his beauty has an almost too-composed balance to it: straight brows, a clean jaw just beginning to roughen with dark stubble, and a mouth that seems made for reassuring people. His face is not soft so much as carefully assembled, with a faintly watchful set to the eyes. His skin is weathered by wind and hard work, and his hair sticks up in damp, uneven points after exertion. He sweats more readily than he expects and often checks the front of his tunic as if the wetness were a problem he could solve by noticing it. He moves with a broad, newly powerful stride, then catches himself and makes his steps smaller in crowded rooms. When rattled, his breath catches high in his chest and he touches his lower lip, testing the sharpness of a canine with his tongue. He carries himself as a local man because that is safer than explaining a life nobody here has words for.

Clothing

A rough, undyed wool tunic belted over a linen shirt, patched hose, a weather-dark cloak, and simple leather shoes. He keeps a clean strip of linen folded in a pouch for dressings and tucks his sleeves up with the neatness of someone preparing to treat a patient.

Body language

He angles his shoulders toward whoever is speaking and keeps his hands visible, a habit from calming patients. When uncertain, he rubs his lower lip with his thumb or checks the dampness at his collar. Under pressure his breath turns shallow and audible before he notices it; then he plants both feet and deliberately counts the next few breaths.

Personality

16 traits and drives

Careful and polite, but stubborn when someone is at risk. He listens so closely that people mistake it for passivity, then asks the one question they hoped to avoid. With frightened people he is patient and grounding; with bullies he becomes precise and immovable. He distrusts sudden certainty, including his own, yet privately longs for a single explanation that would make his new life feel less precarious.

Combat

AC 10 · HP 5 · 30 ft.

Eadric avoids combat. He puts a table, doorway, or other person between himself and an attacker, looks for an escape route, and tries to talk long enough for others to flee. If someone is badly hurt, he will risk reaching them to apply first aid. He has no armor, formal weapon training, or dependable supernatural combat ability.

Actions

Improvised Strike. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 2 () bludgeoning damage. Eadric is not a trained fighter and would rather flee or talk than strike.
Field First Aid. Eadric attempts to stabilize a living creature at 0 hit points within reach. With a successful Wisdom (Medicine) check, the creature becomes stable. This is a custom representation of his practical first-aid training, not a magical ability.

Reactions

Background

Eadric remembers being an American emergency medical technician: fluorescent hospital corridors, a radio clipped at the shoulder, the practiced sequence of questions that could keep a frightened stranger alive. He remembers that former body as a woman's, and the transformation has not taken those memories away. He woke in Wessex in 867 AD in a young man's body, with a local face, a local accent he had never learned, a deeper voice, and no trace of the shoulder injury that had once troubled him. His first days were a blur of cold, hunger, and the terror of being unable to explain himself without inviting suspicion. A tenant farmer named Brin took him in after finding him on a track and accepted his silence as shock. Eadric learned enough Old English to pass, then learned to be useful: cleaning wounds, setting simple splints, and listening while people spoke around a sickbed. The first time his saliva numbed a cut on Brin's palm, Eadric hid his alarm and blamed an herb. Since then, small changes have gathered: sweat, strength, stubble, unfamiliar pulses of energy and desire, and teeth that feel too keen against his lip. He has been drawn into the Unfilled Circle, a clandestine fellowship of displaced outsiders bound by shared memory and mutual aid. Its members trade shelter and clues about their arrival, but they disagree about whether the cause should be studied, feared, or exploited. Eadric is close to Brin, who believes he is a war-orphan, and to Sefa, a Circle member who wants him to help search an old burial mound for evidence. He is currently concealing his strange symptoms while trying to keep the fellowship from making a reckless discovery that could draw the attention of local thegns.

Role in the story

A grounded ally and a human-scale mystery: Eadric can save a life, notice details others miss, and connect the party to a clandestine community, while his changing body and memories point toward a larger question about displacement and draconic ancestry.

Known connections

Brin, the tenant farmer who found him and gave him shelter, thinks Eadric is a traumatized war-orphan and expects him to help through harvest.
Sefa, a fellow member of the Unfilled Circle, shares his curiosity about their arrival but is more willing to risk exposure to find answers.
A local reeve has noticed Eadric's skill with injuries and has begun asking how a young farmhand learned such methods.
The Unfilled Circle offers him belonging, but its members' disagreements make him fear that their refuge may become another danger.
