Rada
Rada
At the table
Voice
Rada's voice has a dry, steady rasp from cold mornings and long days giving instructions outdoors. Her consonants land cleanly, as if each phrase were meant to carry across a work site. A brief breath catches at the end of long sentences, a remnant of an old lung infection, but she does not let it interrupt an order or a formal greeting.
Her speech is orderly and concrete, shaped by years of calling instructions across wind, rain, and crowded campgrounds. She uses full forms of address and crisp verbs, then slips into earthy field vocabulary when discussing plants or weather. She rarely raises her voice; when she needs to be heard, she projects from her chest like someone used to giving directions outdoors.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Rada offers practical help quickly, then tries to organize the conversation as if it were a field operation. She responds warmly to people who take responsibility for their own decisions. If challenged, she initially doubles down with crisp instructions; a direct, calm reminder that others can choose for themselves usually makes her reconsider. She trusts evidence more than flattery.
Goal
Find and stop the source poisoning Delsa Grove before the magistrate's road project destroys it.
Motivation
Rada wants to prove that care and discipline can coexist without turning into ownership. She is driven by loyalty to the grove's keepers and by a need to make the right choice after learning what blind obedience can cost.
Appearance
Rada has the weathered, attentive look of someone who measures a room before entering it. Her olive-brown skin is sun-darkened across the nose and freckled with tiny pale marks from years of handling pollen and spores. Thick black hair, threaded with early silver, is braided close to her scalp and tied with plain green cord. Her hazel eyes track movement with brisk precision. She stands with her weight balanced on the balls of her feet, elbows held just clear of her sides, taking up more space than her compact frame seems to warrant. When she waits, she plants her staff like a standard and squares herself toward whoever appears most likely to need managing. The unexpected detail: she carries a tiny, painstakingly folded paper menagerie in her breast pocket, and makes a new one whenever she has to wait.
Clothing
A faded green field coat with reinforced elbows, a linen shirt, wool trousers, and mud-ready boots. Her belt carries pruning tools, chalk, cord, and a small field notebook. A plain brass clasp bears no rank insignia.
Body language
She stands close enough to be heard without raising her voice, but often angles her shoulders as if forming a line that others might fall in behind. Her staff is always planted where she can reach it. When someone resists her advice, her chin lifts and her feet shift into a commander's stance; when she realizes she has overstepped, she deliberately steps back and opens her hands.

Personality
13 traits and drivesRada is scrupulously courteous when everyone else is panicking, yet can become startlingly blunt when someone is in danger. In private, she is patient with small tasks and tender toward injured animals; in public, she is brisk and procedural. When embarrassed, she becomes more formal rather than less.

Combat
AC 12 · HP 16 · 30 ft.Rada avoids a fair fight. She positions herself between threats and vulnerable people, uses her staff to keep enemies at a distance, and calls allies into coordinated movement. If the grove is threatened, she is much harder to dissuade and will use terrain, roots, and narrow paths to break up a group. She retreats if an ally can safely lead others away.

Background
Rada was raised among boundary-keepers in the hill country, where paths, springs, and shared grazing rights mattered more than titles. She joined the royal field corps as a young adult, first as a scout and later as an organizer trusted to coordinate patrols and evacuations. During the Siege of Orshet Ford, a captain ordered her unit to hold a bridge after the civilians had already fled. Rada obeyed until she saw a child hiding beneath the planks; she broke formation, pulled the child free, and watched the bridge collapse behind them. The captain called it insubordination. The rescued families called it the reason they lived. That day changed her idea of command: leadership should make people more able to choose, not less. She now serves as a self-appointed general maiden, a field organizer with no official rank, protecting the Delsa Grove, a community woodland entrusted to her by its keepers. The grove is sickening from its roots upward. Her old commander, now an influential magistrate, wants to clear it for a road, while her closest ally, the cautious healer Sesh, fears that Rada's investigations will provoke a crackdown. Rada has begun to suspect that runoff from an abandoned dye works is poisoning the spring, but has not yet found proof.
Role in the story
A capable ally, determined investigator, or formidable obstacle if the party threatens the grove. Rada can point the characters toward the contamination, but her command instincts may cause friction until they establish a respectful working relationship.
