Tazira
Tazira
At the table
“How far, and from which side?”
Voice
A dry, clear voice that carries well across open ground without becoming a shout. Dust roughens its edges after long travel, and she shapes distances and directions crisply, as if each word were a mark on a chart.
She speaks in a practical, measured rhythm shaped by years of calling distances over wind and caravan noise. Her sentences are short when giving instructions and longer when explaining a route she trusts. She favors concrete landmarks over abstract directions, and a little rasp enters her voice after a day of dust.
Speech patterns
How to play them
She offers useful route advice before asking what the travelers intend to do with it. Earn her trust by sharing specific information, admitting uncertainty, and treating local guides as experts. She will refuse to certify a route as safe if she has not personally checked it.
Goal
Trace the vanished wells and find out who removed them from the official survey, before travelers die following the false routes.
Motivation
She believes accurate maps should help ordinary people survive, not merely make powerful people better at reaching places first.
Appearance
Tazira is a sun-browned Egyptian woman with a compact, road-hardened build and a stillness that makes her seem to have chosen the exact patch of ground beneath her. She plants her weight on the balls of her feet, never quite settling her heels, as if the earth might offer a clue at any moment. Her broad, expressive jaw and slightly prominent front teeth show whenever she chews dates or laughs; her grin is unexpectedly open and youthful against her severe field manner. Fine sand has polished the edges of her leather gear, and her linen sleeves are stippled with tiny ink dots. When she moves, she steps as though tracing a line on a map, turning sharply at landmarks and rarely wasting a stride. The impression she leaves is of someone who has already measured the distance to every exit.
Clothing
Layered cream linen beneath a sand-colored hooded wrap, with a dark indigo scarf, fitted leather bracers, a broad belt holding map tubes, and soft boots wrapped at the ankles against grit. A strip of faded red cloth marks the compass side of her pack.
Body language
She waits on the balls of her feet with her shoulders angled toward the nearest route out. Her chin lifts when she is assessing terrain; when she suspects a lie, she turns her whole body toward the speaker and holds unnerving eye contact. Her hands are usually busy pinning a map corner, testing a strap, or sketching a tiny landmark in the air.

Personality
13 traits and drivesTazira is cautious about promises but impatient with dithering when someone is in immediate danger. She distrusts easy certainty and double-checks even her own work, yet becomes fiercely protective once she accepts responsibility for a group. At ease, she is wry and generous with practical advice; when frightened, she grows intensely exact and starts naming distances, slopes, and bearings as though precision itself could hold the world together.

Background
Tazira grew up among the canal-side workshops of Waset, where her mother repaired surveying chains and her uncle sold copied route charts. As a girl, she learned that a map was not the land itself but a promise about how to cross it. She joined a caravan expedition led by the ambitious surveyor Eadric, whose party sought a buried irrigation complex in the western desert. During a sudden sandstorm, Eadric ordered the group onward rather than retreating to a known well. Tazira disobeyed, led three exhausted porters toward a patch of tamarisk she remembered from an old seasonal chart, and found water. Eadric and two others did not return. The experience made her distrust confident plans and take responsibility for every mark she inks. She now surveys routes for the Reed-Sound Office, a small public works concern named for the whispering rushes along its canal yard. Her younger brother Hatem wants her to come home and help care for their aging mother; her former apprentice Wulfrun has taken a lucrative commission to map a restricted royal tomb district, and Tazira fears he will mistake a clean drawing for a safe road. She is currently trying to establish whether a chain of vanished wells was deliberately erased from official maps.
