Malfred
Malfred
At the table
Voice
A full, weathered voice shaped by shouting over wind, engines, and firing ranges. It has a dry rasp at the edges and a friendly, blunt rhythm. He can fill a room without leaning toward anyone, and his regional inflections drift in and out over time. Fear makes his speech halt and factual, as if he is writing a report aloud.
Friendly and plainspoken, with a broad American frontier cadence that changes subtly with the regions he has spent time in. His military training lends his sentences clipped, decisive endings, while years alone outdoors have left him comfortable with long pauses. He gets louder when excited, not necessarily when angry; anger usually makes him more direct and less willing to explain himself. He avoids poetic descriptions of the paranormal and insists on separating what a witness saw from what they concluded.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Be direct and useful. Earn trust through competence, keeping promises, and protecting vulnerable people without demanding gratitude. He warms to curiosity grounded in evidence, but conceals family details and becomes sharp if someone presses for names, children, or the red-horse painting. Give him room; crowding him makes him withdraw even when he is being friendly.
Goal
Find out whether the states, counties, and other divisions of America are alive, and learn what is drawing the uncanny closer to his family before it reaches his children.
Motivation
Protect his people while proving that the fearsome unknown can be investigated, named, and survived. Beneath that resolve, he wants a peaceful home he no longer believes he can safely have.
Appearance
A tall, fresh-faced young man with relaxed, rugged handsomeness, wheat-dark blond hair threaded with gold, and bright sky-blue eyes. He wears his hair clipped short with meticulous, almost stubborn regularity. His suede coat is broken in at the elbows and shoulders, its seams repaired with mismatched thread; beneath it, a plain cotton shirt is kept improbably clean. He stands with a frontier's easy dignity, weight balanced as if the ground might demand a quick shot. His movements are economical until he forgets his own strength: a handshake can become a vise, and a careless lean can crack a chair rail. He keeps an odd amount of space between himself and other people, even while talking at full volume. The unexpected detail is his care for that plain shirt: he mends it himself with tiny, even stitches and gets visibly annoyed if anyone treats it as disposable.
Clothing
A practical Cold War-era suede field coat, plain cotton shirt, worn trousers, sturdy boots, and a modest field harness. He dislikes rich, stiff clothing and calls it useless far from home. The coat is repaired often, while his carefully stitched shirt is his oddly protected possession.
Body language
He plants his feet as if braced against wind, leaves a deliberate buffer around his body, and scans exits without interrupting conversation. His hands are steady around a rifle but restless near unfamiliar occult evidence. When afraid, he goes rigid and stares too long rather than retreating immediately. When affection catches him off guard, he looks away and busies himself with gear.

Distinguishing features
Personality
18 traits and drivesHe is loud, friendly, and generous with practical help, yet keeps his body and deepest feelings at a careful distance. He can be curious and open-minded with a witness, then dismissive and blunt with a European relative. His religious devotion gives him a moral anchor, but not a taste for rules; he will break protocol without hesitation if he believes someone is in danger. He longs for peace and behaves as though wanting it would be a weakness.
- Alignment
- Neutral Good, with a fiercely practical streak and a capacity for calculated cruelty.

Combat
AC 17 · HP 165 · 30 feetHe chooses distance, cover, and a clear retreat before firing. He prioritizes enemies threatening civilians or spellcasters gathering power, uses Action Surge to end an urgent threat, and conserves ammunition when possible. In close quarters he uses the rifle as a club, draws his revolver, and tries to break contact. Supernatural creatures can disrupt his judgment: if one becomes visibly impossible, call for a Wisdom save against fear at the DM's discretion; this is a roleplay complication, not a universal immunity or vulnerability.

Background
Arthur gave him one name, Alfred, and Malfred has never quite decided whether the name or its owner belongs to him. He grew up far faster than Arthur expected, a young nation made flesh while older place-born watched and argued over who might have fathered him. The rumors name Berwald, Nils, or Allister, and less welcome possibilities besides. Malfred rarely asks. In his own mind, Arthur is his father because Arthur stayed. He remembers his mother with tenderness tangled in grievance, and avoids the older relatives whose presence makes old family disputes feel like live ammunition. He has been a hunter, soldier, scout, and investigator across generations of wars. The first years gave him long, quiet stretches of wilderness and a life he sometimes misses so intensely that he refuses to discuss it. Later conflicts trained him into a world-renowned marksman and taught him that a deadline can be more dangerous than an enemy. His faith survived the wars, though it never made him obedient to every rule or institution. He is kind to ordinary people, especially those others dismiss, but can justify frighteningly harsh choices when he thinks lives are at stake. During the world wars, a soldier friend left him a painting of a red horse with one eye missing, standing in a desolate, wind-scoured landscape. Malfred keeps it wrapped and hidden. Since then, stories of cryptids, UFOs, and the paranormal have become his work. He cannot see the dark things people describe; when he does glimpse one, terror overwhelms his trained composure. He has gathered fragments of lore from Native American place-born, finding a strange familiarity in stories of thunderbirds and horned serpents, though he knows his curiosity does not make those traditions his to claim. He has many children, fifty associated with each state and one with the capital, but he is not the father of every one. He loves them fiercely and keeps their existence from foreign place-born, partly from protectiveness and partly from fear of what may be hunting them. His current investigation suggests the states, counties, and other divisions may themselves be alive. He has told no one. Each clue makes him wonder whether his own kind are kin to the monsters he hunts.
Role in the story
A formidable, guarded ally who can guide the party through wilderness investigations and bring military discipline to an occult mystery. His knowledge is useful, but his refusal to share what he knows can become a source of conflict. He may become a quest giver, a protective but unreliable patron, or a frightened man forced to confront evidence that the uncanny is part of his own family.
