At the table
Voice
A breathy rasp shaped by cold runs, woodland air, and the habit of speaking through a mask. Her consonants are crisp from years of giving quick instructions; her vowels loosen into warm, open sounds when she talks about the wild. Under direct orders from the Lotus Queen, her voice takes on a flat, measured precision that sounds unlike her.
Her voice has a dry, breath-shaped rasp from years of running in cold air and speaking through a fox mask. She clips practical instructions into short phrases, but lets vowels lengthen when describing rain, birds, or a remembered place. Her pauses are deliberate, like the silence between footfalls. When the Queen's command overtakes her, her words become unnaturally exact and lose their usual earthy turns of phrase.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Begin with a practical offer, such as guiding the party through safe woodland paths or tending a wound. She tests whether they notice the difference between her own choices and her conditioned behavior. Honest concern and respect for the outdoors build trust; threats to her mother or village make her guarded and potentially dangerous. Characters who help her resist a Queen's command can earn her candid cooperation.
Goal
Break the Lotus Queen's control without exposing her village to retaliation, and find out what is poisoning the water.
Motivation
She wants to protect ordinary people from being turned into instruments of someone else's will, even as she struggles to tell where her own will begins.
Appearance
A young woman with weather-browned skin and a fine dusting of pale pollen caught along her hairline. Her fox mask is lacquered ivory-white, with one ear repaired by neat pink thread; beneath it, her dark eyes seem to turn in slow, hypnotic spirals when she fixes on someone. Her white robes are edged in pink and worked with a black spiderweb pattern that shifts like a net when she moves. She travels with the spring-loaded economy of a stalking fox, feet barely stirring leaves, then stops so abruptly that onlookers often take another step before noticing. She smells unmistakably of crushed mint, wet bark, and the sharp animal musk of a den, though she insists it is only the forest. The unexpected detail is a tiny, carefully folded paper bird tucked into her belt, made from pages of a silly romance she reads when she thinks nobody is looking.
Clothing
Layered white monk's robes with pink piping and a black spiderweb design across the sleeves and lower hem. The fabric is patched for travel, stained at the knees with dark soil, and tied with a practical sash carrying a lacquered fox mask, paper charms, and a worn staff.
Body language
At ease, she crouches on the balls of her feet or leans toward whatever is growing nearby. Her hands are restless but precise, tracing little circles against her palm. When the Queen's influence takes hold, her shoulders square, her chin lifts, and her gaze fixes on a point just beyond the person speaking. If someone mentions her mother, she turns her whole body toward them before answering.

Personality
14 traits and drivesVeyana is alert and wry in the open air, noticing tracks and weather before she notices a social slight. Around frightened people she becomes patient and unexpectedly playful, but with authority figures she can turn formal and difficult to read. She longs for companionship, yet distrusts anyone who offers certainty. Under the Lotus Queen's influence she becomes unnervingly decisive, speaking as if every choice has already been weighed; afterward she is ashamed of that hard clarity.

Combat
AC 18 · HP 91 · 60 ft.She darts into reach, strikes quickly, and uses her speed to force enemies to divide their attention. She targets weapons, knees, and exposed balance points rather than seeking lethal blows. She uses Lotus-Thread Palm to disrupt dangerous foes, then withdraws behind cover or moves to protect an ally. If the Lotus Queen's command is active, Hy-Vela may abruptly prioritize a target or objective that contradicts her own instincts. She avoids killing when a clean disabling strike will suffice.

Background
Hy-Vela grew up in a reed-cutting village where her mother, Salla, taught her to read weather from the undersides of leaves. At thirteen, a flash flood swept away the footbridge and trapped a group of children on a small island. Vela crossed the current by leaping between floating timber, carrying each child back one at a time. The rescue won her notice from the monks of Old Halla's Step, a remote retreat named for a long-dead bridge keeper whose job has vanished with the old crossing. There she learned discipline, speed, and the art of striking without killing. Years later, the Lotus Queen arrived as a patron, promising to shield the valley from a spreading blight. The Queen's healers treated Vela for a fever, but their fragrant lotus draughts and repeated meditations gradually bent her loyalty. Vela now serves as the Queen's masked courier and enforcer, sometimes carrying orders she cannot remember receiving. She keeps secretly in touch with Salla and with Brant, a stubborn former fellow monk who suspects her obedience is not freely given. The village's water has begun to taste sweet and metallic, and Vela has been ordered to silence anyone who asks why.
Role in the story
An adversary whose apparent loyalty conceals a person fighting to reclaim her own choices. She can first appear as the Queen's swift masked agent, then become a guide, witness, or ally as the party uncovers the source of her control and the danger to her village.
