Veyr Kall
Veyr Kall
At the table
Voice
His voice has a dry, papery rasp at the edges, likely from years of speaking over pumps and waterwheels in flooded ruins. It carries clearly without being loud, with clipped consonants that make instructions sound like labels on a drawer.
Veyr speaks in compact, carefully ordered sentences, shaped by years of dictating field notes in cramped and dangerous places. He reaches for precise measurements and comparisons rather than grand claims. When he talks about a damaged text, his pace quickens and he becomes generous with detail; when discussing loyalty, he turns everything into a question of procedure.
Speech patterns
How to play them
At first, Veyr presents himself as a practical fellow investigator and offers to share observations. He lets the party expose the vault's hazards, then attempts to take the cradle once they have opened a route. If confronted, he argues that the Tribunal can protect the artifact better than adventurers can. He will bargain for time or safe passage, but avoids admitting that he serves Azkhar unless the evidence is undeniable.
Goal
Take the cradle from the Sunken Archive and deliver it intact to the Obsidian Tribunal on Azkhar's behalf.
Motivation
He wants to prove that his years of service have recovered something meaningful from the loss of his mentor, while secretly hoping to keep the cradle from becoming a weapon.
Appearance
Veyr is a narrow, long-limbed human with a deliberate, economical way of moving, as if every room were a map he has already partly solved. His skin is the warm brown of oiled teak; close-cropped black hair lies in precise ridges, and his amber-brown eyes track hands before faces. His palms are darkly stained with archive ink, while the pads of his fingers are smooth from years of turning brittle pages with a bone spatula. He smells unmistakably of clove oil, old paper, and the faint mineral tang of wet stone, a scent he knows and cultivates to make people associate him with careful work. When he stops moving, he folds his hands behind his back and seems less like a soldier than a locked cabinet that has learned to walk.
Clothing
A close-fitted, dark slate travel coat with waxed seams, a high collar, and stitched inner pockets for document slips. He wears soft-soled boots, a narrow leather harness for tools, and a scarf treated with clove oil to mask the smell of flooded stone.
Body language
He turns his whole body toward whoever is speaking but keeps his eyes on their hands. His fingers make small, precise motions, as if aligning invisible pages. When impatient, he taps two fingers against his own wrist rather than fidgeting.

Personality
13 traits and drivesVeyr is patient with difficult texts but impatient with people who refuse to follow a sound plan. He can be genuinely generous with scholarly knowledge, then ruthlessly transactional when a prize is at stake. He admires courage, but distrusts anyone who acts before understanding the cost.

Combat
AC 15 · HP 38 · 30 ft.Veyr avoids a fair fight. He positions himself near cover, uses the weighted cord to slow whoever threatens his route to the cradle, and saves the dustglass for a close pursuer or a chance to escape. He prefers to let the party overcome hazards, then seize the opening they create. If reduced below half his hit points, he tries to bargain, retreat, or take a hostage rather than die for the Tribunal.

Background
Veyr grew up among the salt-damp storehouses of a port where salvage crews sold drowned books by the basket. His mother, a copyist named Imani, taught him to read damaged scripts by comparing what survived rather than guessing at what was lost. At nineteen, he joined a survey expedition into a flooded repository beneath the old coast. When a pressure door failed, his mentor held it open long enough for Veyr and the other apprentices to escape, then vanished behind the water. Veyr spent years believing that knowledge had cost the mentor's life for nothing. He eventually took work from Azkhar, whose agents promised access to sealed collections and the means to reclaim what the sea had swallowed. Now he serves as a field operative for the Obsidian Tribunal, tasked with taking the cradle from the Sunken Archive. He has no patience for deciphering the vault when the arriving party can do the dangerous work first. His former apprentice, Temba, still sends him scraps of research and does not know whose orders Veyr follows. Veyr is trying to keep that connection alive while concealing how close the Tribunal is to the prize.
