Appearance
Grkett is a compact, sharp-moving man whose body seems permanently braced against a deck pitching beneath his feet. His skin has the weathered bronze texture of wet rope left in the sun, and fine salt crystals often cling to the hairs on his forearms. He smells unmistakably of kelp, bitter tea, lamp oil, and the metallic tang of old coins, a fact he knows perfectly well and uses to judge whether strangers are observant. Before speaking, he pauses as if listening to water through a wall, draws a small breath through his teeth, and taps two fingers against his sternum. His eyes are dark amber and quick, always measuring exits, hands, and the nearest source of drink. He moves with restless economy, never quite standing still, yet his hands are startlingly gentle when handling charts or injured birds. The contradictory impression is of a shabby dockside nuisance who possesses the composure of a royal astronomer when the weather turns dangerous.
“Fast, dry, and vividly metaphorical. He clips the ends off words when impatient, stretches them when mocking someone, and drops into a low whisper whenever sharing information he considers genuinely dangerous.”

Distinguishing Features
His first breath before speaking sounds like a soft intake through clenched teeth.
He smells of kelp, bitter tea, lamp oil, and old coins, and openly jokes about it.
A string of tiny colored glass vials hangs at his throat, each containing seawater collected before a notable storm.
He has an unconscious habit of tracing wave shapes in spilled liquids with one fingertip.
His left boot is heavier than the right because it conceals a flat brass compass in the heel.
Voice
“A dry tenor with a rasp like a match struck on wet stone. His laugh is sudden, breathless, and usually sounds like he has just remembered a private insult.”
Clothing
A faded green fisher's coat patched with sailcloth, a sleeveless red waistcoat stained by ink and brine, high-laced boots with soles wrapped in quieting felt, and a belt crowded with chalk, cord, folded charts, copper tokens, and tiny glass vials of colored seawater.
Body Language
Grkett leans forward as though pulled by a current, rocks subtly from heel to toe, and points with two fingers instead of one. When lying, he becomes unusually still. When genuinely frightened, he smiles and begins counting nearby doors, windows, and ladders.
