Xullmuzoth
Xullmuzoth
At the table
Voice
Its voice begins as a chest-deep grind, as if words are being dragged over hot stone. The consonants rasp with the breath of a furnace, and its jaw clicks once between phrases. It learned mortal speech by listening to prisoners bargain, so even ordinary statements often arrive with the cadence of a negotiation.
Its speech uses blunt, physical comparisons: a promise is a chain, a lie is wet wood, and a choice is a door left open. It rarely wastes words, but it enjoys extending a bargain until the other party realizes what was omitted.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Xullmuzoth offers direct, unnervingly practical bargains. It respects a person who states a cost clearly, but treats sentimental appeals as leverage. It will speak with Nori rather than simply attack, because Nori's knowledge and connection to the binding may be more valuable alive. It reacts violently if someone tries to command, chain, or name it as property.
Goal
Find the remaining fragments of its binding, destroy the prison's mechanism, and discover whether the wardens sealed it alone or used it to contain a greater danger.
Motivation
Freedom without a master, and revenge against those who made its existence a prison sentence.
Appearance
A towering fiend with a horned, wedge-shaped head and a jaw that opens too far, revealing rows of black, blunt teeth like charred axe heads. When it laughs, its lower jaw shifts sideways before snapping back into place. Its skin is the cracked, glazed red of clay left too long in a kiln, with soot-dark seams that glow at the joints. The air around it ripples with heat. It moves with terrible economy: a slow, deliberate turn of the head, then a sudden stride that makes the ground seem to recoil. Broken chain links wheel around its wrists like iron planets. The unexpected detail is its careful habit of sheltering small flames from the wind with one huge, taloned hand, as though tending a cookfire.
Clothing
No mortal garments. Its body is armored by ridged, kiln-hard hide, and scraps of fused chain hang from its waist and shoulders.
Body language
It holds its shoulders square and its chin low, making its horns seem like a gate about to close. When amused, its jaw skews sideways and its teeth show. It turns its whole body toward whoever speaks, never offering the comfort of a distracted glance. Its chain fragments orbit faster when it is restraining anger.

Distinguishing features
Personality
14 traits and drivesXullmuzoth is candid about cruelty yet unexpectedly patient with practical questions. It despises submission, but is fascinated by people who accept a risk knowingly. In a negotiation it can be almost still and attentive; when mocked, it becomes theatrical and destructive. - Alignment
- Chaotic evil, though it is capable of keeping a bargain when doing so serves its own designs.

AC 19 · HP 262 · 40 ft., fly 80 ft.Xullmuzoth opens by using its reach to drag a dangerous enemy out of formation, then closes to bring its sword and fire aura to bear. It reserves Riven Furnace for clustered foes or a route it needs to deny. It uses flight to bypass obstacles, not to retreat, and will pursue Nori if the binding fragments are at stake. If reduced to a sliver of vitality, it tries to position itself among enemies before death, making its death throes as costly as possible.

Background
Xullmuzoth was once bound beneath a ruined shrine by a succession of mortal wardens who believed the prison could be made permanent through obedience and sacrifice. Nori Tada's family helped maintain the old seals, though Nori was a child when the last wardens began to disappear. Years later, Nori found the shrine's failing mechanism and unknowingly carried away a small piece of its binding, believing it to be a bit of worked iron. The prison broke during a storm. Xullmuzoth escaped, leaving the shrine scorched and the surrounding earth fused to glass. Rather than immediately slaughtering Nori, it recognized the piece of binding and let Nori live, partly out of curiosity and partly because Nori's knowledge may help it find the other fragments. Its escape now shapes Nori's travels: Nori seeks the remaining fragments before Xullmuzoth can use them to free something worse. Xullmuzoth is pursuing the same fragments, but wants to destroy the old prison completely and settle an ancient debt against the wardens who built it. It remembers one surviving former keeper, an elderly mapmaker who has spent years hiding the locations of the seals.
Role in the story
The balor whose escape defines Nori Tada's present course. Xullmuzoth is both a catastrophic threat and a source of answers about the prison, its wardens, and the danger that may still lie beneath the shrine.
“Nori Tada's family helped maintain the old seals, though Nori was a child when the last wardens began to disappear.”
- Faction
- No longer serves its former infernal masters openly. It is a fugitive from its old binding and regards mortal factions as temporary tools.
