Voice

His voice has a dry, slightly rasping edge from years of calling across wind, rain, and reed beds. His breath normally comes in measured nose-drawn pulls, as if he is keeping pace with a long walk. When angered, the breath catches audibly in his chest, then his words strike out in short, forceful bursts rather than dropping into a softer register.

Wulger speaks in practical, clipped phrases shaped by years of calling instructions across wind and water. He names what he can observe before guessing at motives. When excited, his sentences speed up and pile details together; when rattled, he draws a sharp breath through his nose and speaks with abrupt, hammering emphasis.

Speech patterns

Names a concrete detail before offering an opinion: a footprint, a wind shift, a loose strap.
Frames advice as a choice between likely outcomes rather than as a command.
Uses hunting comparisons when impatient, then catches himself if someone takes offense.
When angry, his words come clipped and forceful; his breath becomes audible through his nose.

How to play them

Wulger respects demonstrated competence and direct questions. Bring him a useful observation and he will share what he knows; flatter him or dismiss his methods and he will test the speaker with pointed questions. He is easier to approach when discussing routes, tracks, or the safety of the hunters than when discussing his reputation.

Goal

Discover what is driving predators toward Thistle Ford and protect the settlement without letting the New Hunt become an excuse for needless cruelty.

Motivation

To keep his family and neighbors alive while proving that careful planning can make hunting safer than inherited bravado.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Nearly six feet tall, Wulger has the rangy, long-legged build of a marsh runner, with a forward-tilted posture that makes him seem already to be judging the ground between himself and the nearest exit. His blond hair is coarse and sun-bleached at the ends, usually tied with reed cord; bright green eyes track hands and doorways before faces. His skin is warm brown, freckled across the nose, with a faint green cast at the temples that shows most clearly after rain, a trait of his Verdant-blooded kin. He moves with careful, heel-light steps, then can spring forward with startling speed. While waiting, he keeps his weight on the balls of his feet and rocks almost imperceptibly, as if feeling for tremors through the ground. Unexpectedly, he carries a tiny clay pot of blue marsh flowers and checks its soil before a hunt.

Clothing

A close-fitted, moss-brown hunting coat waxed against rain, patched at the elbows with softer hide. He wears a reed-woven shoulder cape that breaks up his outline, a belt with bone toggles, and mud-dark boots wrapped in strips of cloth to muffle their tread.

Body language

He leans slightly forward and keeps his weight on the balls of his feet. His gaze flicks from hands to exits, and he uses two fingers to trace invisible routes on his thigh. When rattled, his breath catches high in his chest and his jaw works once, hard; he then goes unnaturally still before moving.

Personality

12 traits and drives

Wulger is attentive and strategic, but his care for people often comes out as blunt orders and risk calculations. In routine company he can be dryly funny and unexpectedly patient with beginners. Under pressure, his merciless focus is useful until a loved one is threatened, when a sudden temper can overwhelm the very caution he teaches.

Combat

AC 13 · HP 11 · 30 ft.

Wulger prefers to choose ground before a fight begins. He uses cover, range, and baited routes to separate a threat from its allies, shooting first and closing with his spear only when the terrain or an ally demands it. He does not fight to display courage; he fights to end danger quickly. If a companion is cornered, his calculations give way to a sudden, risky charge.

Actions

Hunting Spear. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 5 () piercing damage.
Longbow. Ranged Weapon Attack: to hit, range 80/320 ft., one target. Hit: 6 () piercing damage. Wulger can use this attack in melee at disadvantage.
Custom: Marsh Grit. Wulger throws a small pouch of marsh grit at one creature within 10 feet. The target must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or be blinded until the end of Wulger's next turn. Once used, Wulger must spend an action refilling the pouch from suitable ground.

Reactions

Marshstep. When a creature Wulger can see moves within 5 feet of him, he can move up to 5 feet without provoking opportunity attacks from that creature. He must end this movement on solid ground.

Background

Wulger was raised among a Lightfoot-descended family who hunted the reed-choked wetlands around Thistle Ford. His mother, Seshka Marshstep, taught him to read wind, mud, and bird alarm calls; his uncle, Thrik, taught him that a clean kill was kinder than a drawn-out one. As a youth, Wulger was known for a knack for noticing patterns others missed, but his patience had a sharp edge. During the flood winter, a marsh predator began taking livestock close to the ford. The old hunters pursued it by familiar trails and lost two people in the sucking mud. Wulger, then seventeen, proposed a baited false trail and a three-sided ambush. It worked, but he triggered the trap early when he saw the beast turn toward his cousin. His cousin survived with a crushed leg, and the animal was killed. Wulger's method became the basis for the New Hunt, a set of practical traditions that have made him famous among local hunters and uncomfortable to many elders. He still argues with Thrik, who believes Wulger mistakes efficiency for wisdom, and he quietly pays for his cousin's care. Now a string of livestock killings has returned near the ford, and Wulger suspects someone is deliberately driving the animals toward the settlement.

Role in the story

A skilled local guide whose hard-edged methods can help the party survive the wetlands, while his suspicion about the latest attacks draws them into a family conflict and a threat close to home.
