Cethka
Cethka
At the table
Voice
Cethka speaks from a broad, steady chest, with a dry rasp at the edges from years of wind, pollen, and shouting harvest instructions across canopy bridges. Her breath is usually even. When rattled, it catches halfway and escapes in two nasal clicks before she can answer; she does not disguise the pause.
Her voice has a dry, clear edge shaped by years of speaking over wind in the canopy and giving instructions during harvests. Consonants land firmly, like pruning cuts, while vowels lengthen when she is explaining a plant's needs. When rattled, her breath catches before her words and she begins with clipped, workmanlike phrases.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Begin with a concrete offer of help or a question about what the visitors need. She is receptive to evidence and honest grief, but distrusts grand claims. If the party seeks access to sacred groves, she asks what they will protect in return. Mentioning Olyss or the plague earns her attention, though she will test whether the subject is being used to manipulate her.
Goal
Find Olyss, trace the movement of infected cuttings, and keep the island's communities united without making the prophecy a chain around her children's lives.
Motivation
She wants to protect people without confusing preservation with control. Her duty to the island is genuine, but her private hope of finding Olyss can make every stranger who arrives by sea seem like a possible answer.
Appearance
Cethka has the composed, weather-shaped presence of someone who has stood through many seasons of public argument. Fine bark-like lines cross her temples and disappear into her hair, not scars but natural markings that deepen with age. Her gaze rarely settles on a speaker's face: it checks the doorway, the hands, the nearest living thing, then returns to the speaker as if measuring the whole room at once. She moves with careful, economical steps, placing each foot as though testing soil. When startled, she draws a breath that catches halfway and releases it through her nose in two dry clicks. The unexpected detail: she wears a tiny, brightly painted wooden frog on a cord at her waist, and absentmindedly turns it belly-up whenever council sessions become pompous.
Clothing
Layered garments of moss-soft linen and weatherproof leaf-fiber, secured with plain wooden toggles. Her sleeves are rolled for work, and a mantle woven with living spring shoots marks her public office. Nothing is ornamental without also being useful.
Body language
Keeps her shoulders level and hands visible in negotiations. She angles her body toward exits when danger is possible, and touches wood or soil before making a promise. When rattled, her breath catches, her nostrils flare, and her thumb turns the painted frog over and over.

Background
Cethka was raised among the root-bridges and canopy gardens of Sylvarae, where disputes between island peoples were settled as often in planting schedules as in council chambers. A prophecy declared that a child of her line and Vel'thir, a Hodne celestial, would help preserve the worldtree through a coming blight. She and Vel'thir had children because the council and prophecy demanded it, not because they loved one another. They have never become lovers, but they have learned a wary respect for one another; their children are the one subject on which neither bargains nor evades. Cethka loves each child fiercely. During the worldtree's plague, the family was driven from the nursery groves while she was already weakened by carrying and tending the sick. Pirates seized one of her daughters in the chaos. Cethka tried to reach the skiff and collapsed before she could cross the broken root-bridge. The child, Olyss, vanished before Cethka could even learn what name the pirates gave her. That failure remade her: she stopped believing that good intentions could substitute for strength, and took on the exhausting work of protecting the groves and guiding the council. Years later, the healing harvests have begun to recover, but the plague's old blight still appears in isolated roots. Cethka suspects someone is secretly moving infected cuttings beyond the island. She maintains uneasy ties with Vel'thir and her surviving children, and depends on the council's varied communities even when their leaders frustrate her. She is determined to find Olyss without turning the island into a prison or starting a feud with every sailor who comes ashore.
