Vurst Krevane
Vurst Krevane
At the table
Voice
A dry, grain-edged voice shaped by dust, cold mornings, and years of giving commands over marching boots. Its consonants land cleanly, with clipped endings and a slight rasp after long rides. When he is furious, his words become faster and more sharply articulated, as if he were issuing orders to a failing unit.
He speaks in compact, carefully ordered sentences, using military terms even in ordinary conversation. His upbringing at the edge of the imperial household taught him to make each word sound considered; years commanding troops gave his instructions a crisp, practical finish. He addresses people by rank or surname and rarely uses a title he has not personally earned.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Vurst begins with formal courtesy and tests whether the party can be bought, delayed, or divided. He offers terms that appear generous but leave him control of the decisive resource. If confronted with proof of his deal with Brodazarr, he denies the necromancer's influence and claims the alliance is temporary. He may show genuine respect for courage or competence, but he never mistakes respect for trust. If escape is possible, he retreats rather than die for a kingdom he has not yet secured.
Goal
Conquer Arventi, secure the kingdom Brodazarr promised him, and force Emperor Malador to acknowledge him as more than a disposable bastard son.
Motivation
To transform the insecurity of being an unacknowledged imperial son into undeniable power, while convincing himself that every ruthless choice is merely a necessary step.
Appearance
Vurst has the polished, deliberate presence of a man who learned early that a room often yields before a sword is drawn. His dark hair is combed straight back, but a stubborn cowlick rises above his left temple whenever the weather turns damp. He walks with a measured heel-to-toe pace, as if every corridor were a parade ground. His black military coat is tailored for a broader man and pulled close with a too-tight belt; the cuffs are repeatedly resewn in fine gold thread, the repair more lavish than the worn fabric around it. His hands are broad and callused from years of sword drills, with a permanent gray-black stain in the creases from polishing the soulstone blade. Unexpectedly, he carries a tiny clay whistle shaped like a frog, and turns it between his fingers when he believes no one is watching. He leaves the impression of a disciplined officer holding his temper and his uniform together by force of will.
Clothing
A black, high-collared Arven military coat, strained across the shoulders and cinched too tightly at the waist, with cuffs repaired in conspicuous gold thread. He wears a dark blue sash, polished breastplate, riding boots, and a rain cape kept in unusually good condition.
Body language
He keeps his shoulders square and his chin slightly tucked, like an officer expecting inspection. He plants both feet before delivering an ultimatum, but shifts his weight toward the nearest exit when Brodazarr is mentioned. His thumb repeatedly traces the sword's guard; when genuinely amused, he turns the frog whistle in his palm.

Personality
14 traits and drivesVurst is controlled but not cold: he notices exhausted soldiers and quietly improves their rations, yet will order a village searched without hesitation if he believes it shelters an enemy. He is proud of his rise and privately hungry for acknowledgment, but he presents both as simple military ambition. In public, he is precise and composed; when cornered, he becomes cutting and impatient rather than louder. Around children or old keepsakes, an awkward gentleness surfaces, which he quickly covers with discipline.

Combat
AC 19 · HP 150 · 30 ft.Vurst uses disciplined movement and his reach to keep enemies from surrounding him. He opens with a spell or a lightning bolt against dangerous distant foes, then closes to make three heavy sword strikes. He reserves Shield for a potentially decisive hit and Counterspell for enemy magic that could turn the fight. He uses Action Surge when a target is vulnerable, and Misty Step to escape a flank or reach a spellcaster. If badly outmatched, he bargains for time while withdrawing toward troops or prepared ground.

Background
Vurst Krevane is the half-son of Emperor Malador, acknowledged just enough to be useful and never enough to feel secure. He entered Arven's army fifteen years ago with a borrowed horse, a sealed imperial letter, and the conviction that being underestimated was an insult he could turn into leverage. He rose by winning ugly campaigns efficiently, rewarding soldiers who followed orders and quietly removing officers who treated his parentage as a joke. When he was assigned the smaller kingdom of Arventi to overthrow, he expected a swift conquest. Instead, the party repeatedly disrupted his plans, then defeated him long enough for him to steal their powerful stone and have it embedded in his sword. The stone awakened lightning in the blade, and its power drew the attention of Brodazarr, a great necromancer Vurst secretly released from his soulstone. Brodazarr offered him an entire kingdom if he serves the necromancer's designs. Vurst has begun to mistake the promise for a contract between equals. His older half-sister, Princess Seshka, sends him coded warnings from the imperial court; he has not answered her in months. His quartermaster, Toma, knows how much of the army's success depends on Vurst's ability to keep frightened troops believing he has everything under control. Now his immediate problems are a wavering occupation, the party's pursuit, and Brodazarr's increasingly specific demands.
Role in the story
A recurring military antagonist whose rise from overlooked imperial bastard to ambitious general has brought him into conflict with the party. His stolen stone and alliance with Brodazarr make him a dangerous bridge between a political conquest and a necromantic threat.
