Scratch Ledger-Vein
Rogue, Inquisitive
Scratch Ledger-Vein
Species
Cinderclaw, Hoard-Warden
Appearance
Scratch Ledger-Vein is a small, long-limbed cinderclaw with dark rust scales that catch the light like oxidized iron. He moves in quick, economical starts, head cocked slightly as though every room is a document being read from top to bottom. His eyes rarely settle on faces. They travel to hands, belts, door hinges, pockets, seals, and the corners where dust has been disturbed. Brass-rimmed magnification monocles hang over his brow on a fine chain, and he lowers them only when inspecting something he considers dangerous or sacred. The unexpected softness of his appearance comes from a pale cream throat and delicate whisker-like sensory filaments around his jaw, which tremble whenever he hears a lie. He leaves behind the impression of a nervous clerk until he begins reciting a shipment's serial numbers from memory, at which point the room seems to shrink around him.
“His voice is dry, quick, and metallic, with the faint clicking undertone of a quill tapping a brass desk. He pronounces names carefully but rushes through numbers in perfectly even groups.”

Distinguishing Features
Brass magnification monocles engraved with different lens markings
Pale cream throat scales that flutter when he detects a lie or hears forged terminology
A heavy lockbound ledger satchel chained to a reinforced belt
Three parallel rows of ink-stained scale tips along his right forearm
A tail that curls around valuable objects protectively even while he sleeps
Voice
“A dry, rapid baritone with a faint click beneath each word, like brass counters striking a stone table. When calm, he sounds merely precise. When alarmed, he inhales sharply between phrases and becomes unnervingly courteous.”
Clothing
A soot-dark leather apron fitted with more than a dozen pockets, each marked by tiny brass numerals. Beneath it he wears a close-wrapped charcoal tunic, flexible scaled bracers, soft climbing boots, and a red thread tied around one wrist for every active investigation.
Body Language
Scratch keeps his shoulders tucked forward and his tail wrapped around the leg of his ledger satchel. His claws tap in groups of three when he is calculating. When someone makes a claim he doubts, his head tilts toward their hands, his nostrils flare once, and his breathing becomes a faint dry rattle through his throat scales.
