At the table

Voice

His voice carries a clear, rounded resonance, shaped by years of speaking across echoing halls and over the rush of water. A faint rasp catches on long speeches, likely from travel and smoke-filled negotiation rooms. He enunciates names with care, but lets a brief, warm laugh break through when a child interrupts him.

He speaks in carefully built clauses, often naming a person's stake before presenting his own. His sentences shorten when the situation becomes dangerous. He avoids grand declarations unless addressing a crowd, and uses dry, self-mocking humor to defuse attention on his lineage.

Speech patterns

Begins formal discussions by asking what each party cannot afford to lose.
Uses concrete examples from roads, kitchens, ferries, and harvests rather than abstract ideals.
When embarrassed, answers with dry humor and redirects attention to someone else's needs.
When angry, speaks more directly and names the consequence he intends to prevent.

How to play them

Treat Oryndar as a person before treating him as a prince. Bring a concrete problem and be candid about who bears its cost. He responds well to practical compassion, reliable information, and people who challenge him without humiliating him. He becomes guarded when someone invokes unity while asking the vulnerable to make all the sacrifices.

Goal

Secure a binding elemental compact that protects shared water routes and prevents rival courts from turning migration disputes into war.

Motivation

He believes unity is only worth pursuing when it improves daily life for people who have little power over borders and treaties.

Appearance

Oryndar occupies a room before he speaks, not through height alone but through the careful breadth of his wings and the alert sweep of his tail. His movements are deliberate and economical, as if every turn of his body has been rehearsed for crowded chambers. His jaw is broad, with small, closely set teeth that show when he laughs; he chews tough food with a visible, almost meditative patience. The unexpected detail is that he keeps a pocketful of tiny carved animal toys and gives them to children during formal visits, even when protocol forbids gifts.

Clothing

Layered court robes in river blue and ember red, cut with slits for his wings and tail. The hems are weighted against wind, and the cuffs carry discreet stitched marks for the elemental communities he has visited. He wears polished boots suited to both palace floors and muddy roads.

Body language

He angles his wings carefully so they do not brush other people, though in a crowded room they still make his presence impossible to ignore. His tail curls around a chair leg when he is listening and lashes once when he catches a lie. Under pressure, his jaw works slowly as though he is grinding a hard seed.

Distinguishing features

Water-slick, translucent patches pattern one side of his skin, while the other carries ember-bright seams that warm the air nearby.
Two swept-back, devilish horns and a flexible, tapered tail mark his Qumon lineage.
Broad, pale wings and a soft, steady glow show his Hodne ancestry.
His broad jaw and close-set teeth are especially noticeable when he eats or laughs.
He carries carved toy animals for children, an incongruous habit for a prince trained as a diplomat.

Personality

13 traits and drives

Oryndar is warm with strangers but cautious about promises, and he can be stubbornly patient until someone is endangered. In public he is composed and attentive; among family he is more teasing, competitive, and prone to old resentments. He wants to be seen as a person rather than a symbol, yet instinctively performs the role whenever a crisis begins.

Alignment
Principled pragmatist; values peace and obligation, but will deceive to prevent a war.

Quirks

Leaves a carved animal beside the plate of any child who seems bored or frightened.
Taps the edge of a cup twice before drinking, checking its temperature by habit.
Names every ferry he rides, then remembers the name years later.
When waiting for a difficult answer, folds a napkin into a small boat and sets it facing the nearest door.

Habits

Counts the exits and the water sources when entering an unfamiliar room.
Offers a practical kindness before asking for a favor.
When talks grow heated, he restates each side's concern in plain language, even if doing so makes him unpopular.
After a dangerous encounter, he checks the youngest or least powerful person present first.

Patient in negotiation, impatient with preventable suffering.
Courteous without being meek; he will refuse a powerful person plainly if the refusal protects someone vulnerable.
Proud of his heritage, but uneasy when others treat it as proof that he can reconcile every conflict.
Tender toward children and practical workers, more guarded around courtiers.

Flaws · 3

He takes responsibility for outcomes beyond his control and can become exhausted before admitting it.
He withholds bad news from his family until he has a proposed solution.
His commitment to hearing every side can frustrate people who need an immediate decision.

Fears · 3

That the court will turn his mixed heritage into a pretext for war rather than a bridge between peoples.
That Aurelian's resentment will harden into a public break neither brother can repair.
That his diplomacy will save the powerful while leaving ordinary families exposed to the next disaster.

Needs credible evidence and allies before confronting the royal adviser.
Wants his siblings to speak honestly about succession and resentment.
Needs a durable pause in the water-rights dispute before the next dry season.

Combat

HP 48 · Custom Generic Fantasy: 30 feet on foot; can fly 40 feet in open space, but cannot hover while carrying a heavily laden creature.

Oryndar avoids a fight if there is a credible path to an agreement, but does not mistake restraint for passivity. He uses his wings and tail to disrupt a rush, keeps allies behind him, and seeks a clear route to retreat or negotiation. He targets weapons and footing before vital areas. If an enemy threatens a bystander, his caution gives way to direct force.

Reactions

Interpose. Custom Generic Fantasy reaction. When an ally nearby is threatened, Oryndar may move between them and the attacker if there is room, taking the immediate danger upon himself.

Background

Oryndar was born during a treaty summit between the elemental courts, an event his parents later called a promise and rival courtiers called an omen. King Hadros raised him to be a living argument for unity; Queen Lysareth insisted he learn the names of servants, ferry workers, and soldiers as carefully as he learned court titles. His older brother, Prince Aurelian, excelled at command and came to resent being treated as the obvious heir while Oryndar was praised as a symbol. His oldest sibling, Princess Seralune, taught him the quieter craft of listening and remains his most trusted family confidante. At sixteen, Oryndar accompanied a delegation to the Silt Steps, a river crossing where waterfolk and fire-clans had fought over a dam. When a sluice gate broke, he tried to hold back the flood with his elemental gifts. He could not. A ferryman named Ivara died pulling him clear, and Oryndar spent the following night carrying the injured to safety instead of attending the victory feast. The experience changed his idea of diplomacy: a treaty is not peace unless ordinary people can survive its failures. Now a young adult and a senior-ranking noble by custom, he travels between elemental communities seeking a durable compact over water rights, migration, and shared defense. His immediate problem is that both sides suspect his mixed heritage makes him secretly loyal to the other. He also knows Aurelian's allies are quietly gathering support to keep him away from the succession council.

Role in the story

A high-profile ally, political complication, or non-villainous rival whose efforts to unify divided communities can draw the party into diplomacy, succession politics, and a cover-up surrounding the Silt Steps disaster.

“His older brother, Prince Aurelian, excelled at command and came to resent being treated as the obvious heir while Oryndar was praised as a symbol.”
