At the table

Voice

A clear, chest-supported voice with a dry edge, trained by calling out over patrol noise and sharpened by years of explaining spells to skeptical adults. Deka's words carry easily without becoming a shout. A hint of breath catches after long shifts, when they have been talking while walking or casting.

Deka speaks in clear, clipped phrases shaped by guard calls and the habit of giving instructions over wind and street noise. They tend to explain a magical idea by comparing it to a practical task. When excited, their words tumble together; when frightened, they become precise enough to sound almost rehearsed.

Speech patterns

Asks a direct question, waits for the answer, and then asks the question the person was avoiding.
Explains magical danger with plain comparisons drawn from guard work, such as a spell being a door left unlatched.
Uses dry humor to puncture King's martyrdom, but never mocks his fear or grief.
When excited about a new spell, speaks quickly and sketches its effects in the air with one finger.

How to play them

Deka is warm with people who are frightened and matter-of-fact with people who are trying to dominate a room. They offer useful help early, but watch whether others accept it before offering personal trust. With King, they are affectionate and candid, and will interrupt a plan that relies on him taking every risk alone.

Goal

Help King learn to share responsibility, earn recognition as a dependable guard mage, and secure reliable medicine for their aunt.

Motivation

Deka wants to make protection a shared craft rather than a lonely act of heroism, and to show that a young, unconventional mage can serve people without becoming a weapon for authority.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Deka has a long, attentive face and a watchful way of holding still, as though listening for a door to open several rooms away. When waiting, they lean their weight onto the balls of their feet and angle one shoulder toward the nearest exit. Their hair is tightly coiled and clipped short at the sides, with a stubborn tuft that springs up again after being combed flat. Their guard's coat is well brushed but shines at the elbows from use; the cuffs are dusted with chalk and tiny flecks of dried candle wax. They smell distinctly of rosemary, lamp oil, and the mineral tang of fresh rain, a combination they think is simply what a working mage smells like. The unexpected detail is a pocket-sized wooden whistle on their belt, carved with the shape of a plump little bird. Deka uses it to call their elderly aunt's escaped chickens, not for guard duty.

Clothing

A dark, practical guard's coat over a high-collared linen shirt, sturdy boots, a narrow belt of spell components, and a weatherproof shoulder cape. Their clothes are neat but plainly repaired, with chalk marks and candle wax betraying the hours spent studying.

Body language

Deka balances forward on their feet, even when seated, and keeps their shoulders angled toward whoever seems most likely to need help. They touch the bird whistle when caught off guard. When angry, they plant both feet squarely and stop fidgeting, becoming unusually still.

Distinguishing features

Waits pitched forward on the balls of their feet, as if a call for help might come at any moment.
Carries a small carved bird whistle for their aunt's chickens, a homely keepsake among the guard's gear.
Smells of rosemary, lamp oil, and rain-wet stone, which they do not realize is noticeable.

Personality

13 traits and drives

Deka is practical and compassionate, but their compassion often arrives disguised as an order to sit down and drink water. They are cautious around officials yet quick to trust someone who admits uncertainty. In a crisis they become brisk and decisive; after it passes, they can be startlingly tender. With King they are teasing and stubborn, while alone they quietly worry that challenging him may push away the person they most want to protect.

Alignment
Neutral good

Quirks

Counts a room's exits on their fingers, starting over if interrupted.
Names their spell components by what they are useful for, such as 'door chalk' or 'storm thread.'
Taps the bird whistle twice against their thumb before making a difficult decision.
Leaves a cup of water beside sleeping guards and denies knowing who put it there.

Habits

Counts doors and windows whenever entering an unfamiliar room, then pretends this is merely a habit of curiosity.
Checks the guard post's lamps at the end of every shift, even when someone else has already done it.
Offers practical help before emotional comfort, then circles back later with a direct question.
When worried, cleans their spectacles or spell components despite neither needing attention.

Traits · 4

Takes frightened people seriously, even when their fear seems irrational.
Distrusts grand speeches but believes in small, repeated acts of care.
Becomes more decisive under pressure and more doubtful afterward.
Protective of King, but unwilling to flatter him when he is being reckless.

Flaws · 3

Takes responsibility for problems that are not theirs to solve.
Can mistake blunt honesty for the only honest way to speak.
Hides their own exhaustion because they believe asking for help would weaken their case against King's self-sacrifice.

Fears · 3

Being forced to choose between protecting King and protecting a group of civilians.
Discovering that their improvised magic will fail someone who trusted them.
That King's habit of carrying every burden alone will eventually leave him with no one close enough to help.

Wants and needs · 3

Wants King to accept help before he reaches a breaking point.
Needs enough money and time away from duty to care for their aunt.
Wants their improvised magical training judged fairly rather than dismissed as reckless.

Combat

AC 12 · HP 9 · 30 ft.

Deka prefers to keep allies between them and a threat, using fire bolt at range and magic missile when an enemy must be stopped immediately. They save shield for a hit that would otherwise drop them or expose King. They use mage hand to pull a latch, move a dropped key, or create a useful distraction, and retreat rather than pretend to be a seasoned battle mage.

Shield (level 1, abjuration). A magical barrier grants +5 AC until the start of Deka's next turn, including against the triggering attack. Deka can cast this once per day as a reaction.

Actions

Fire Bolt. Ranged Spell Attack: to hit, range 120 ft., one target. Hit: 5 () fire damage. A small, bright bead of flame shoots from Deka's palm.
Mage Hand. Deka creates a spectral hand at a point within 30 feet. It can manipulate an object, open an unlocked door, retrieve an item, or carry up to 10 pounds. It cannot attack.
Magic Missile, 1/day. Deka launches three glowing darts of force at creatures of their choice within 120 feet. Each dart hits automatically and deals 3 () force damage. Deka can divide the darts among targets.

  • Bird whistle (personal keepsake)A wooden whistle carved as a round little bird, polished smooth by years of handling.

Possessions

A pocket notebook filled with spell diagrams, patrol routes, and reminders to buy medicine.
A tin of rosemary salve from their aunt.
A worn letter from King, kept folded inside the notebook.
The carved bird whistle they use to call the farm's chickens.

Background

Deka grew up in a wind-battered settlement whose wells were protected by a stone ward that had outlasted the people who knew how to repair it. Their first spell was an accidental mage hand, summoned while they tried to keep a roof tile from crushing a neighbor's hand. King, then a newly assigned guard, found Deka practicing in secret beside the broken well and helped them convince the local magistrate to fund formal lessons rather than punish their unsanctioned magic. During the winter the old ward failed, Deka held a breach shut with an improvised spell long enough for families to escape, but could not save the settlement's storehouse. The loss taught them that cleverness without help can still end in disaster. Deka now serves as a junior mage among King's guards and is King's closest friend. They know when King is hiding exhaustion behind duty and will confront him even when he would rather be thanked than challenged. Deka is also trying to keep their aunt's failing farm supplied with medicine, while an officious examiner at the guard college questions whether Deka's unorthodox training is safe.

Role in the story

King's closest friend, a junior guard mage, and the person most willing to challenge his belief that he must solve every problem alone. Deka can offer the party a personal route into King's private concerns while remaining a capable character with their own duties and troubles.
